Bears can run down a horse. Good luck with that.

I've never actually ran with my ipod before. I have that thing that attaches to your arm and stuff, but i've never used it while running.
When I run outdoors I like to just listen to nature and my heart beating. But I think it would be nice when I run indoors...

I wish I had an iPod to run with, would definitely help. How do you all remedy muscle loss with the runs? I've been thinking about buying some kind of BCAA/L-Glutamine supplement to take before I run to help spare muscle.
I'm seeking to gain some weight so I will most likely keep my mileage right where it is (11 miles), all LSD.

just adjust your calories in. Your muscle will not breakdown during a run

Right now though I've dropped back down though, and I'd like to be able to do 10 miles easily. This week I've run 12 miles. Any tips?
And I see you're training for an ultramarathon - best of luck!

Google "BUD/S Warning Order" it's a program that is meant to progress you to 30 miles a week. The progressions are pretty steady to avoid running injuries and the like and it's easy to follow. It asks you to pace all of your runs at 8:30 min/mile pace.

I was a fan of the "Jack Daniels" method as a beginner - add 3 miles a week, every 3 weeks - long runs coming first

Basically, it's a program designed to prep you up for Navy SEAL school (BUD/S). It involves calisthenic workouts and swimming/running. I'm only using the running portion because imo it's a safe and effective method to workup to a decent mileage/week.
You start off by running 2 miles 3 times weekly at a 8:30 pace, for 2 weeks. You take a week off, and then you bump it up to 9 miles a week. You can find all of the progressions on this website

No kidding. I used to have pain in either my ankle or shins almost every time I went out on a run, Nike Free's changed all of that.

I was running in under armour cross training shoes which I thought were fine but I was getting terrible pain in my left leg. I went and bought a good pair of new balance running shoes and problem was fixed instantly

There is such a major difference in recovery times for my runs when I do them on concrete vs. softer surfaces. I had to run home from the gym which was about ~3.7 miles and my shins where aching a bit after the run.
Thankfully enough though stretching/alternating showers has removed 95% of the aches and pain.

There is just something about running in 40F weather that changes everything oh so drastically, haha. I've been going to the local high shool track to run where it's only 4 laps for a mile, vs 10 in the indoor track at the gym. My goal would be to run 4 miles at a 8 min pace, which I imagine I'm either at or exceeding (hopefully).
How are all of you doing with your goals?

Ah I always get confused by anything which isn't degrees celsius haha.
Anyway managed my first 16km run on Tuesday in 95 mins! Which is a big thing for me because in the past I've had trouble running faster than 10 mins/ mile. So last week was great, hopefully next week will be as good. 8 min pace sounds really good though, hopefully I'll be able to speed up soon.
Weather here has gone crazy though, one minute it's ok and the next there's a torrential downpour - when it rains do you guys wear what you normally would or extra stuff? Usually I just wear a vest and running tights and change when I get back, but am not sure if this is the advised thing to do?

It doesn't rain much here but I'd be careful as you can probably get sick pretty easily. Yeah, pacing yourself takes a lot of practice... I gouge how fast I'm going by my breathing patterns. Typically if I can breathe through my nose without too much effort I'm either going high 8 or mid 9s.. once I have to breath out through my mouth I'm probably around high 7 or 8.
Are you training for a half or full marathon?

It sounds like you have a good base to start off of for running, but a lot of you time needs to be spent in the saddle.
Also, You will need to only train for 4-5 months leading up to the ironman (the other 7-8 months is spent doing base training)

Timed my 3 mile 2 days ago and it was about 23 minutes, although I wasn't running for time which is decent (imo). I wish I could have timed the 4 mile I did yesterday, I am positive it was in the 30-32 min range (based on my exertion).
After doing 4 mile runs running 2 feels like nothing, I wonder what it feels like after you run 6 miles regularly, haha.

I decided to increase my mileage as I am highly considering enlisting for a shot at becoming an Army Ranger. I've been interested in US SOF units for a long time, and from what BTDT's have said starting out as a Ranger is a good career choice.
I've been doing 2/3/o/4/2, I'm going to jack it up to 2/4/o/5/2 and use the 2 milers as HIIT and the others as LSD. From what I have been told by both former & current Rangers, I should be aiming at doing the 5 miles in 30-35 mins. to be succesful at RIP.
Will keep my times posted in here, how is everybody else doing?

I've started running outside at night lately. There is something strangely exhilirating about running in the dark. I think I get less tired also.

Did this in high school. Very quiet outside as well. Just gotta make sure you are comfortable with the neighborhood you are running in.
