Networking Administration

I've considered Networking Adminstration to be one of my future career. Right now I am majoring in Computer Science and this is my second year. Computer Programming is not my kind of thing.

I was wondering if Networking is a lot easier and less stressful?

You will likely program as a NA too...if you are looking for a comp sci job w/o having to program good luck.

You need to figure out what electives/concentrations your university offers too

wow strong threads about this today...

i started as a programmer... now i work with cisco networking and as a sys admin.. .

programming was the least stressful of the three.. you have deadlines, but your simply working on a project within a timeline...

with networking, downtime is unacceptable... if **** fails, your under the gun to get it back up yesterday...

with sys administration, **** can fail for a number of reasons beyond your control... app updates, windows updates, viruses, hardware, poorly written OS code etc etc...

networking and or system administration are great fields, just dont get the misconception that they are easy or stress free..

i prefer the high stress of networking over my eyes popping out staring at endless lines of code on a monitor all day long..

Thank you. This is what I wanted to know.

So when you're networking, the only stress is that you're dealing with people, and the technical part of networking is a lot easier than programming?

yes and no...

id say the most challenging part of networking is the people aspect... but that aside, networking by no means is stress free... you can have one port fail on a 24 port switch and its difficult to detect... trying to determine network bottlenecks can be a real pain in the ass... dealing with multiple devices in multiple physical locations can be a nightmare and just learning the basics of cisco routing is a challenge...

to me, programming is easier... its a language, you learn it, you never forget it (when used regularly)... networking can be an array of new problems, many of which, you have never experienced before that require excellent logic and troubleshooting skills... i just prefer to work more with my hands and be mobile compared to behind a desk staring at one monitor all day long...
