I beg to differ. A high IQ generally coincides with a greater ability to rationalize. Hell, half of IQ tests are rationale based. (of course there are exceptions and I'm NOT at all saying all "academically" intelligent people are morally good)

This is true to a certain extent, however if an IQ is below a certain threshold (Typically 70), one is considered to be mentally retarded and not culpable in the eyes of death penalty jurisprudence.

What do you think about the fact that someone can be fully competent when they commit the crime, fully competent when they stand trial, but at a later date are ruled incompetent and unable to be executed?

I am opposed to the death penalty so I guess in a sense I support that view, but from a legal standpoint I think that if a person is deemed competent to stand trial and was found to be competent during the crimes commission, i do not think that subsequent mental incompetence should prohibit imposition of the sentence.

IQ does not predict emotional self control. Rationalization can be overridden when people like this lack the awareness to control limbic responses; they have poor emotional intelligence.

I agree - but would you not say that those who have such an inordinate lack of emotional intelligence begets a poor IQ as well? Hence, an IQ test would rule them out?

No; we are varying mixes of both, with IQ being relatively unmalleable but EQ can be learned. IQ fails to correlate with certain indicators of success that have to do with human interaction (e.g. leadership, relationships etc). Well that is the extremely simplified response.

Read Goleman's books if interested.

Statutorily barred, eh? I am aware the trial has begun.

I'm still trying to figure out how the prosecution doesn't feel it could prove these two menaces would/could be a potential future harm.

In the end, it probably doesn't matter. If those two go to jail, they will not live out whatever sentences they get unless they are both kept away from general population.

Good discussion and very interesting - I have seen Daniel Goleman's book (good 'ol college psych) but never picked it up - I just might after this.

I actually personally feel that IQ can most definitely be improved and is not a set factor (not a popular theory I know). But, the brain can keep developing until death or disease - and with that development grows a greater knowledge and rationalization base - I feel. As far as EQ goes, well, I guess I just don't know enough about it to keep the discussion going, but thanks for the candor.

I do however stand to my original post. Before people can have kids I wish they had to pass an IQ test as well as a very hard stress test...the latter being an appropriate facet in regards to what happened here.
