Taking Whey during Weight Loss
Guys, hope you could help me with this. I'm planning to buy whey to supplement my protein intake during my weight loss. I was suppose to buy ON Whey however I saw this warning on the label not to be used on weight loss. So that kept me from buying.
As I was going home, I'm still convinced that you could lose weight even if you drink whey, as long as you observe calorie deficit.
Please tell me I'm right.. LOL. If I'm wrong, well I appreciate any good and sound advice.

That label is there because some people either think that whey is a direct cause of fat loss or a steroid. Both are false. Taking protein on a cut is fine.

Don't waste your money, when solid food products like poultry, red meat, and fish is available.
You think liquid will keep hunger at bay?

The reason this is put on the label is to try and explain to ppls that Whey Protein is not a "complete" food source. Its not a MRP (Meal Replacement), its strictly a alternate protein source for convenience. It makes no difference if your trying to gain weight, lose, or maintain...whey is a valid choice, but you need a balanced diet with it regardless.
Typical stuff you see on suppliments because a lawyer said it was a good idea in case some moron starts to take 8 whey shakes a day all his/her sole intake and ends up in the hospital or worse.

I think my hair dryer says "do not use in shower" and "do not use when sleeping."
Same principle here. And yes, chicken or sirloin would be better nutritionally than whey, but whey is fine (especially pre and post workout.)

lol great post.
Agreed with above. plus in terms of convenience, its a lot easier to keep a spare shaker with some whey in it then always have a steak on you don't you think?

Not really a waste of money, when you are talking about price per gram of protein I think you will find that Whey is much cheaper than the alternatives you mentioned...
Not saying whey should take the place of whole foods, but there are times where it is a better alternative. For instance it is quicker absorbed (good for first thing in the morning when your muscles have been without nutrients for 8hours) and quick to prepare (a couple of scoops can be taken as a meal replacement where you would miss a meal otherwise.

This is a good question that I actually have experience with.
I bought some Optimum Nutrition Whey Gold Meal for outings. It is not really "socially acceptable" to be carrying around protein powder in a sandwich baggy, but I figured it would be a little better to carry around actual one serving packets of whey. However, after about 6 months, I realized that I never actually used them in these situations as it was still inconvenient to carry around a shaker and water. Plus, they weren't too filling anyway.
That is why I looked around for protein bars. The best deals I found were both Optimum Nutrition Bars. The best one is Universal Animal Snak. 30g protein, 35g carbs, and 4g fat per bar. 100% of a lot of vitamins/minerals, and a decent price at $23 for 16 bars.
http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/univ/snak.html
I've already found these to be more convenient for me, which should be a "No sh*t sherlock" moment because I can just grab a bar and go instead of having to get a shaker and water, and mix the powder in, and all that. Plus, since most people don't know what a protein bar looks like, you can just say that you are eating a candy bar.
And no, I don't work for Optimum Nutrition, lol.

Be careful with protein bars, they have a decent amount of sugar alcohols which will still bring up your insulin levels. When cutting I commonly use whey after workout, its a faster absorbing protein than say, animal protein. As far as convenience, I keep a tub at work so I always have it around and I don't have to carry it in a bag.

That, too me, is the biggest advantage to protein powder...its convenience. I can carry it in a protein shaker and not have to worry about finding something or somewhere to eat after working out.
Its definitely not a substitute for whole food but it works great.

Ive been using a empty Eclipse gum container to carry around my whey. Ive got several and 1 easily holds a complete serving (2 heaping scoops). No spills, no fighting with plastic baggies to get every last bit out. I highly recommend this to any/all whey conusors.

Thank you guys or the inputs.
Here's what I'm planning to do. I intend to drink around 2 servings per day. 1 during my afternoon snack and 1 after my workout. I'm not planning to treat it as my one and only food source. On the other hand, I'm going to cut down on some unnecessary carbohydrate source like coffee (w/ sugar and cream) and going to cut down my servings on rice.
This for me, seems to me, a sound diet change plan. I'm not going to be so drastic about it. I'm going to try it for at least a month.

I always have liquid sit downs with sugar alcohol.... I'll never touch that **** ever again.
I have a fair amount of whey but I also use it with food so not just in liquid form. If you do drink them then yes it's easy to have cravings since it goes through the system so quickly.

Whey is perfect for a post-workout drink. It's great for cutting, as you need muscles to burn that fat.

Whey is really easy to measure and conveniant to take.
Meat sources and other sources will keep you less hungry because its solid.
Both are fine.

if budget's an issue, you can always try smoking whey, you only need about half as much!
