Something happened to me today that I had to vent about...
So I'm getting ready to do my bench, nothing crazy, like 160 to start with, when this guy asks if I need a spot. I really didn't, but I said sure, why not? So as I'm doing it, the guy keeps telling me I need to go deeper. I personally keep the elbows at 90 degrees, maybe a little lower, but anything below 3inches from the top of the chest, I don't do, especially if you're dealing with heavy weight. So anyway, dude is all like "C'mon son, what are you doing? You aint doing **** with that! You stopping at the wrong position!"
So, I didn't bother to be confrontational, as much as I would've liked to. Instead, I asked, "well, show me how it's done".....so guy proceeds to bounce the thing off his chest, slams the weight, grunts, etc.. and claims that that is how you build "that bone" (pointing to his sternum). I said "oh ok, thanks" and left it alone...

That had me LOL ing
I NEVER EVER have a stranger spot for me, I'd rather drop the bar on my throat myself.
As far as not lowering the bar all the way down... Personally I bench powerlifting style, holding the bar at chest for a second count but I it's not for everyone.
What I always told my clients was that you don't have to lower the bar all the way to your chest if 1. You're Not a Powerlifter, 2. You have shoulder issues with that range of motion, and 3. If you have a split which allows you to work shoulders and chest on different days.
As far as bouncing the bar off "that bone" lol no comment

By the way... does anyone have anything even close (exercise) to what this guy ^^^^^ is doing?
That squat form was pretty disgraceful but it's still an attempt at a squat, this exercise is pure lunacy ...
Man.... if only I had pictures..

I candidly taped one I saw today on my camera phone at the gym, I'll try to upload it later.
I watched a guy do single arm curls in a squat rack, the the barbell. Now, I have never seen anyone ever do this, so I was pretty intrigued watching him throw 15lbs on each side, and proceed to twist, swing and throw his entire body into an awkward, horribly painful looking curl, then basically throwing the weight back down to the starting position, and repeating. Luckily for me, he did this for 45 minutes, a total of 15 sets of nothing but curls, with an incredible array of shadow boxing/spin kicks in between sets to stay lose.
One of the best days of my life at the gym, thanks to the barbell curling ninja worrior

I have no words for this. That is just priceless (at how idiotic the dude was). I personally do like to touch the chest, but only under a controlled movement. You should have facepalmed the dude

Had a similar thing happen to me. I had 335 on BP for my heavy set which I do one to two reps of. I don't go all the way down to my chest for a couple of reasons, one being that I have subluxed my right shoulder twice...while lifting. So I did one rep and put it up and caught this jackass CRACKING UP at me. I looked at him and asked him what he thought was so funny. His laughter quickly turned to fear (lol) and he asked me why I didn't go down all the way in a sheepish tone. I told him why and basically gave him an f-off attitude and he went away.
The funny thing was that this guy was about 5'10" 225 super out of shape and probably couldn't get up 235 much less anywhere near what I was doing.
You should have asked that idiot how much his "bone" has grown from working out. Better yet, you should have asked him to perform a rep doing it the way that you were doing it. I guarantee you that he would have had a hard time doing it (harder than his way at least) and would have gained some respect and maybe a little knowledge and humility.
and then when they get into a building, they take the elevator!
i hate it when pple take the escalator DOWN a set of stairs! =S

there is an older gentleman (late 60's i think) that always comes in an does leg exercises. when doing leg press he locks his legs out to where i swear they bend backwards haha and when he does shoulder raises with dumbells he swings his whole body. I always feel compelled to watch and I wanna say somethin but I know it'll come off a some smart a$$ kid trying to be a know it all...so i just let him go
nope, nothing wrong with side bends for obliques. strong obliques=strong core strength=strong deadlifts=strong squats. I prefer one hand farmers walks though

I would guess some form of isometrics with added resistance?

I see a guy often who's legit strong & works on the loading/stocking crew at an area store. There's no question that he has strength and ability.
However, watching him use the Perfect Pushups is hilarious.
He gets into position right in the middle of the floor, as if he's putting on a performance ... sets himself ... presses groin to carpet ... and does rapid pushups with just his arms. And as he raises himself upward, the crotch goes closer to the floor. It looks like he's angrily dry-humping a dust bunny or something.
The rest of the time is spent grunting loudly as he starts and ends sets on equipment, letting the weights crash down, and starting small-talk with any female members who happen to be there.
I wouldn't notice if he didn't insist on working out in the middle of the floor (often timed with my cardio on the treadmill) and if I weren't conditioned to look around whenever someone screams and drops things.

i love the side snatch...used to use it alot for sports training, and make my athletes do it...we can do it very safely with the equipment we have (ask me about it, as i can not provide a link on here yet)
I saw this 120 pound guy with like 10 45s on each side of the 45 degree leg press today doing 1/8th of an inch calf raises... pretty ridiculous... I was just picturing in my head both his tibias snapping..

Some guys were doing seated leg curls last night. After each set they'd step up on this flat bench they drug over from the free weight area, then step off the bench and jump straight up immediately after hitting the ground. Each set was 2 reps. Not sure if it does anything but it sure looked weird.

It's a plyometric exercise called a drop jump that helps work on power and quickness.
He didn't clarify whether or not they had a kettlebell in their mouths while they were doing that though????
On another subject
What about Cardio?
Most of the posts deal with weight training but I see a lot of people doing stupid things on cardio equipment namely...
1. Having treadmill on full incline while supporting all their weight by holding on for dear life on the handles.
2. On the stairmill (escalator looking ones) supporting all their weight with their arms both hyperextended and externally rotated to the extreme
3. General pathetic intensity on stationary bikes that Michael Jackson's corpse (post Thriller) could outdo

it's called plyometrics, one of the most effective exercises for them too. the specific exercise is called depth jumps, very useful.
