id rather see a cars subforum or perhaps just a misc serious section to hold threads where people want to have only serious conversations about any number of topics.

The R/P really isnt suitable for science topics because the majority of the discussion is about obama and politics and jeebus.
Plus there are alot of nutjobs in there reciting Quran passages which make my eyes water

I would like to have the option of going to such a forum. I would definitely read it every time I came on BB.com. There are so many scientific ideas that deserve to be discussed without politics and/or religion contaminating them. And not just science but the history and philosophy of science.

The problem is that the discussion of busines/finance/economics inevitably turns into a political debate. It's inevitable which is why all 3 subjects fit perfectly in the R/P
I actually would love to see the R/P split into a seperate Religion and Politics section because it's just basically 2 forums in 1. The same people debate in the same threads.

i think it wont be used very often since most science discussion occurs in response to fundamentalism and science articles are most often posted while subtly directed at fundy positions

Forge: I'm all for it, so far I've learned a **** ton from the supp science boards, and a **** ton more just from lurking in the Misc. This board is full of intelligent people.
I think it would be better off than the religion/politics board. That seems to basically be a "hate on different religions" board, but it's probably good just that that's out of the main misc section... I think that something where people can talk about different scientific fields they're interested in would be more successful than that, it'll become obvious pretty quickly who knows their **** and who doesn't

plus science threads pop up all the time, but they usually need to compete with ms paint dick and poo threads, im 12 and what is this and alot of the time the threads are ruined when someone trolls it.

Another thing that would be sweet is something like the "Mind" forum at Iron Addict's site... The caption is "Don't be a "half person". Train your mind as well as your body." Something like a Personal Development forum.
For example, here was a post there:
Quote:
|
In this world, and in this sport particularly most are driven to reach a level of "completeness". In other words to attain some pre-set goals and then you believe you will be "complete". When you bench 315 for the first time you will have "arrived". I got news for you buddy--your first 315 lb bench press will be an elation and 10 minutes later you will start thinking about 365. Or if I could only get to 10% bodyfat, I'd be happy--it simply does not work that way, and even if you truly achieve all your strength and physique goals you still have you financial, family, relationship, success--whatever goals that will continually push you further. If you are always waiting to feel complete once a goal is achieved you will be forever frustrated. The key is feeling complete in your incompleteness knowing there will always be more to do, but it is time to stop and be happy NOW while working towards you always expanding set of goals. Until you can adopt this mindset you are allowing much more frustration into your life than needed.
|
The thread title was "Incomplete Completeness", btw.
So it's an awesome forum, and those kinds of posts don't really show up on the religion/politics forum over here, because it's not really the same thing as "religion" per se. IA's forum has a lot of Buddhist and some new age slant to it, but over here that stuff would maybe be better in the Religion forum...
I guess what I'm saying is that the nutrition forum revolutionized my understanding of nutrition, the training forums revolutionized my understanding of training, and if we could get a similar "training the mind" type forum set up here with the same kind of insight that's all over this site, it would be awesome.
edit: A post like this one http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showth...hp?t=119211681 would be PERFECT for this type of forum, and as of right now it's stuck in the misc.

Nobody opens misc subsections. Please keep the science threads here. You are now taking valuable threads from the misc ,to a place where nobody will go to.

Forge,
I think its a very good idea to have a Science subsection.
A thread can be made for each science topic, like:
-astronomy
-biology
-geology
-ecology
-chemistry
-etc.............all the ones need discussion about
..and be stickied
and serious discussions each that topic will be had

This gets proposed in the R/P all the time, and I always say the same - terrible idea. Pretty much any religious discussion will end up scientific, and vice versa. There is WAY too much overlap to break it down like this, and it's a total forum killer to break things up into too many subsections.
The R/P moves at pretty much the perfect pace as the unofficial "science" section. Breaking it down further will just cause confusion and dead forums.

Yeah this is definitely true as well. It's definitely irritating as **** when nobody ever goes to the music forum, and all of the music threads posted on the regular misc get closed or deleted... Thus rendering a huge topic like music completely inconversable, whereas we can get posts like "lol my mom caught me ****ing my gf" all night long
