I also have had both of mine done. Two clavical distensions and a torn rotator cuff. I had these about two years apart. My bench will never be the same but Im pain free now. It really depends on whats wrong and what is causing you pain. Good Luck and please let us know.

shoulder problems and surgery are an individual thing like most anything else...........

"Some" have surgery and do as good or better than before in the gym.........where "others" have surgery and have a hard time with it for the rest of their life............

As far as ........."is it worth it or not"..............if you need it......."yes"...........if you don't.......then "no".......

Only you and your doc (hopefully you have a "good" sports doc) will know that........

I suffered MAJOR shoulder damage 6 years ago....Torn rotator, SLAP tear and a grade 2 separation all in the same shoulder, F**ked it up real good.

Never had the surgery(ies) that the orthopedist recommended, and It hasn't hampered me at all. It occasionally makes a weird sound or feels funny but i deal with it, it is basically fine now

Update

Today was my Dr. appointment for my right shoulder. We did a hands on preliminary Diagnosis. We will be treating for Acute Tendonitis. X-rays will be done also for anything we missed. This makes sense,..for the last 18 months, I basically been prepping for BB competitions, 5 total in a 1 year time frame. Once set in,.I would never give it the propper time to heal. I am in a position where I can afford to lend time to the heling process,..Thia means Legs Legs Legs!

In itial treatment was injecting the fatigued site with Decadron. A good read on what this is can be explained here: http://www.chemocare.com/BIO/decadron.asp

A few weeks of some solid recovery is worth 18 months of Mass gains! Thanks for everyones responses and stories,..It looks like the damage is less than what I thought,..pheww!

What flu?! Not me! Hey Chris.

I had a feeling that's what your shoulder problem was. Good news for sure! So, you can continue to train just know that is the movement hurts AT ALL.... DON'T DO IT!!!! Ice it always after training. As mature guys these type of soft tissue issues are common and if you lift heavy you are more prone to inflammation and tears. Call me if you want to talk about it. I'm a pro on them now!

I don't know what exactly your injury is or the extent of it but it probably isn't going to go away by itself and most likely will only get worse.

In the summer of 1996 I started getting shoulder pain when I did any bench or shoulder pressing exercises so I stopped doing them for 3 months hoping it would go away. When I finally went to the Doctor I found out I had a torn labrum and the doctor said I could have stayed away from the gym for 3 years and it wouldn't have made a difference because it was irritated with any movement I made. As a result I had surgery to repair the tear and again I took about 3 months off of any pressing exercises before slowly resuming (with light weight) my recovery.

The bright side is that I focussed on my back and legs during this time and brought them in line with my shoulders which were often overbearing in size compared to my legs.

It took me about 3-4 months to get back to lifting heavier weight but within a year I was full strength. In 1998 I competed in my first National show (NPC USA) and won my weight class with no obvious loss of size. In fact I feel having to focus on my weak points complimented my physique in the end. You have to look for the silver lining somewhere!

If it is "Acute Tendinitis" then most certainly with careful care and the proper training there is not reason it won't get better and completely heal. It is very common and easily cured. If it is a "damaged" joint as in a rotator cuff, which the Doc will confirm after x rays, then you're right, most likely it won't get better. Most likely if it is inflammation, then it just needs to heal. I have had bursitis in the shoulders and tendonitis in the shoulders and both elbows that have completely healed better then when I was in my twenties.

Again, heavy lifting is almost always the cause of tendonitis.

I have it in both elbows and wrist.

Heat area before you train ice after.

Glad it wasn't worse!

Thanks Popps! I mostlikely will give you a call. I may have to approach my training in a different way. I am accustomed to liftine heavy at low reps,..i.e. 100lb. Dbell Shoulder presses. If I can apply a different approach with lighter weight and different rep scheme, maybe I'll have this thing tackled. Whats nice is,..I'm giving myself 18 months to try things out and really pack on the size.

In 1998 I competed in my first National show (NPC USA) and won my weight class with no obvious loss of size. In fact I feel having to focus on my weak points complimented my physique in the end. You have to look for the silver lining somewhere!

Well,..Hopefully the X-rays can rue out anything worse. I'm in a good spot in my training where I can afford to take some time off and heal. If X-rays indicate surgery,..then there is no better time than now.

Most likely if it is inflammation, then it just needs to heal. I have had bursitis in the shoulders and tendonitis in the shoulders and both elbows that have completely healed better then when I was in my twenties.

Again, heavy lifting is almost always the cause of tendonitis.
Lifting heavy is what I learned to do for this prep,...may have to create another split,..I'm open for suggestions.

Thanks gbg! This is something you really need to be careful about as an Oly lifter I would assume,..well if it gets worse for you,..there is always figure competition,...

I know everyone is different, and all injuries are not the same...but I gotta ask...
How can a Doctor know for sure what is wrong with you without Xrays and an MRI?
I know that my Xrays showed that I had alot of soft tissue issues and bone spurring etc, but without an MRI how can a Doc for sure say that there is nothing else wrong?

I have had many years of joint pain, but nothing like I have now. I can tell that I have something very worng with my shoulder. My next appointment is Nov. 6th. The Doc will have already looked over my MRI.

Even though I have stayed away from all pushing movements, I still have pain...even after the Cortizone shot...I now have this burning pain in the front. I guess I will know more by next Friday.

Good luck with yours!

Michael

Update:

Well,..got a call from the Dr. today,..says I have Shoulder Separation
Injury of the Acromioclavicular Joint of the Shoulder (widening of the AC Joint). A common, but misunderstood sports injury, shoulder separation involves sprain or tear of two strong ligaments in the shoulder.

This injury is devided into three classes of severity,..I,II,III with III being the worst.

I am showing signs of Class I into Class II. I am scheduled for a weight bearing X-ray to help determine the extent of the damaged shoulder.

Treatment at first is done conservatively but depending on persistant pain,..may require surgery.

One thing I can tell ya,..This won't be the end of my Bodybuilding,..Aint gonna happen!

Yeah, those aren't my symptoms. Scary stuff! I'm sure you'll get it healed up nicely though. Strange that you can still do heavy shoulder presses...

Hope it all works out Chris, it's odd how it's often the little goofy things that make your shoulder act up.......... for me doing anything (screwing light bulbs in for example) over my head can cause my shoulder to bark........... especially if I hold my arm up there for any period of time.

A positive attitude will get you through this. I had the same attitude and it helped me through my neck surgery and return to lifting.

I think I'm just gonna keep on lifting,..except smarter. I'll concentrate strictly on form, change up a few exercises and make a cpl. modifications.

LOL, you sound like me. You're only putting off the inevitable . And the car thing (wax on/wax off)? Yep, it even still gets to me even after the surgeries. Everything you described above (a few posts back) could have been something I would have written. It is true that we can all have different issues, but have similar symptoms, just as we can have similar issues and different symptoms.

I had been dealing with this injury for years,...Ya know,..I just realized something,...I'm really psyching myself out here! Ive delt with this for years and it hasn't stopped me yet,..Hell with it,..I'm just gonna work on form,,.adjust a few exercises and drive on Dammit! Sure I'll identify exactly what the problem is but nothing changed since my last prep,..It's not any worse,..F@ck It,...I'm gonna train like there is no tomorrow,.I'll just train smarter,.Enuff self induced Pitty!! and I don't think I'll opt for surgery any time soon unless I really F@ck something up.

Chris - keep yer chin up!

I've had both shoulders reconstructed and whislt they are still not pain free and I cant use the weights on shoulder movement I used to - to get to a competitive level is a done thing as far as I'm concerned for you

Take your medicine, do your rehab, get back on the line and make it happen

Range of motion, strict form and no ego will get you back pretty much where you are now!

Somehow I figured you made the same or similar response once in your life,..

I'll just have to reconstruct a new plan,..I like the leaving the ego at the door idea as well,..I bodybuild,..not powerlift. Many types of lifts are incorperated as a bodybuilder,..superset, rest pause, stricter form, lower motion,...

That ego one is maybe the most important

You'll wanna lift what ya did before. You'll see others lifting and the "juices" will flow and tempt you to do something you shouldnt

You'll wonder if its all worth it given the time frame you have adopted and will attempt at times to speed it up - at your peril

All of these and other pressures will arise and the challenge is to get out in front of it, be prepared and dismiss them as temptations

Do that and the rehab and training will get the job done
