Very cool. I can't really say how good it is to have an opportunity to see how others do it. I was REALLY curious, dbx, about your "basic" price tag of~$800. Can you (or anyone) elaborate... please?? I don't really have any money now, but planning never hurt anyone.

holey moley, MIKE: you got us all beat! LOL....
you are ready to charge membership! HAHAHAHAHAH........
nice gym for you also, DB....
as to time and cost: I have been in the house since 1982, so this has been a long process of many years up to this point......I would be afraid to see how much I have spent in total....
I will most likely be moving next year and hopefully, will have a little bit more room than I have now......

Agreed! I missed that on the other page too. Any of you who have spent any time in the equipment forum have probably seen a bunch of others that are really elaborate!

Well, prices fluctuate and some have changed over the past few years, but here's a basic idea that I hope gives some perspective:
Powerline Rack - $300 http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/bsolid/ppr200.html
(This price went up, but I'm just showing a pic of one). I can't mention competitors, but you can obviously look elsewhere for bargains/sales.
Lat tower/pully attachment for rack - $240 (this used to be $180)
Bench - $150-$200 (depending)
300lbs weight and Oly bar - $150 or less on sale at various places...like Dick's.
This ^ is just over $800 (realistic pricing for certain "new" equipment). Again, you can look elsewhere (CL, for example) to pick up bargains on certain pieces. You can decide to buy a select range of sizes on DB's because of their expense, and then use adjustable DB's for anything "larger" like you might use for DB BP. Just pick up pieces and extra plates here and there as you go. I think I have right at 800lbs of Oly plates, and another 300lbs in 1" plates. I have all the plates I need for my needs.
So yeah, the stuff really does add up, no doubt about it. But you can definitely get a decent set-up going for under a grand. Various pieces of equipment are "luxury" pieces to me, as I find you can do a whole hell of a lot with just a cage and some DBs. I also bought plate holders from NYBB that mount to the rack, to keep the plates neat and handy (not in the pics I posted). I would also add that you need to be aware of the weight rating of any bench you might buy. You can but them as cheap as $70, but the rating will likely be something like, 400#, which is worthless. If you're a 200# guy, get one with at least 600# rating. Mine is 700 and is all I'll ever need.
But I gotta tell you, every time someone starts another "pissed off at the gym" thread, it just reminds me of how nice it is to have a home set-up.

[QUOTE=JOHN GARGANI;406261631]holey moley, MIKE: you got us all beat! LOL....
Well our house in TN is 2 hours away from nearest gym so this was the best option. It is in a metal building so it gets pretty cold in the winter. I am in Oregon right now while wife recovers so I have to hit the local gym but I am looking forward to using my gym again. I bought most of the equipment off ebay except for the weights which I had collected over time.

Yea I'm with ya IC - the folks at the gym annoy me quite regularly - but I still don't know if I would stay as motivated in a gym alone. Those are really nice gyms though, I'd like to have one of my own for the bragging rights.

Even though I enjoy working out in a public gym I'm always insanely jealous when I look at these threads for some reason.

Here's a few of mine....
To give an idea of the size of the implements and stones the plates on the KB are standard 1" 10lbs. I have about 200lbs of those but didn't drag them out.
