"Yankees payroll was big."
Sure it was; Phillies didn't just have any "Joe bench-warmr" players. They have All-Stars like Rollins, Howard, Ibanez, Utley and Victorino and they also shopped around and got some decent players last year. Just that the Yankees had the better players this time who PLAYED better. Period. No one should be using payroll as an excuse; the old adage of "any given Sunday" still holds, no matter what sport.
Godzilla roared.
Yankees won.
Philly lost.
Here endeth the lesson.

Yankees payroll... phffttt. I'm sure the Phillies agreed they only won last year over Tampa because *their* payroll was so much larger. Sour grapes indeed! Let's see, 7 guys who played last night came up from the team's farm system. Not bad at all.
And Rollins still thinks they were the better team. Right. I still think the Angels were also better than Philly. They sure had more class. As do the Yankees.

First, congrats to the Yankees. We can talk about payroll or whatever, but the fact is the Yankees got to 4 wins before the Phillies did.
But more class? In New York? Ain't that an oxymoron? I think the Phils have as much talent in their lineup top to bottom as any team in baseball on offense.
I don't think the Phils should hang their heads. 3 straight NL East titles, 2 straight World Series appearances with one championship. Not too bad. Plus, I see no reason at all that they won't be back in the World Series next year. They need to bolster their starting rotation a bit, and figure out if Lidge is done or can be brought back to life. If they do that, maybe we'll see you next October.
But you cannot deny that a huge payroll doesn't play any role. Being a huge Phillies fan, I would nonetheless agree that it had something to do with the Phils win over the Rays last year. Sure, the players have to play the game no matter how much they get paid. But having the big bucks lets you attract the best young talent, and the best free agents, and it helps stack the odds in your favor.
Again, congrats to the Yankees. They were the better team in this series.

"Stacking the odds in one's favour" doesn't guarantee wins. The Yanks got A-Rod and did they do the World Series his first year there? Nope; failed. They got a few others and they didn't guarantee wins, either. Sure, having C.C. and Texeira and A-Rod helped immensely; they're all talented players. But Rodriguez was hurt for the first five weeks or so of the season and Tex was batting .200 or so in that time period and the Yankees were just so-so; once A-Rod came back and Tex found his groove, the team got it together and there it all was. Even so, Burnett was inconsistent and Joba was still learning how to pitch so no guarantees there.
The Sox had Bay, Youkilis, and other fine players; they couldn't pull it off. Same deal for the Angels, Hunter and Abreau notwithstanding. The Yanks were just more consistent, not always "better"--consistency will trump flash any day of the week. And if a good player is hurt and can't play, then his high salary ain't gonna do the batting or pitching for him. The Yankees were fortunate that they had very few injuries to key players this year and that everyone was pretty much there to pick up the slack when someone else faltered; that's the mark of a good team.
And yes, Philly has nothing to be ashamed of. I like Howard and enjoy his power at the plate; Rollins is one of the best shortstops around and Utley rules at second.
But the Yanks were simply better this time out.

What about Matsui? Holy smokes, like a one-man batting order for all his output last night.
All in all, the Yanks won it the hard way with pitching woes and hits that just weren't coming when they were needed most. Philly had a couple of bad pitching bouts themselves. I'd still call it evenly matched throughout the series.

Man I had a f'cking blast last night, can't believe I am up and at work
I know most here always say I am always into trouble and quite frankly I don't give a f'ck, but man last night if it wasn't for me and my friends, this Phillies fan would have been killed.
6 young guys were beating his ass on 173rd street on the Councourse, me and two of my friends broke it up, man they really really f'cked his ass up, wish we would have gotten there sooner.
Anyway tomorrow is the parade! YEAH BABY!!!!

THIS!!!! If it was just payroll, why did we not win since 2000 and lets go back to our most wins in a row. That was before big dollars even hit baseball. The money argument is not holding water!!

As hard as it is for this Red Sox fan to say it: Congrats to the Yankees and their fans.

I wouldn't say it was the payroll. George has spent $200M+ for the last 8 years and only one to show for it. What is that, $1.6B on players who on paper should have won 8 years in a row?
It was more timely hitting by guys other than the big 4. Who could have figured Matsui would be the hero? Who would have figured A-Rod would actually show up in the post season?
As much as it pains me, congrats to the Yankees. I hate them with a passion. Maybe Colin Cowherd is right when he says "root for the good teams and you'll be happier."
And maybe the supposed trend of when Jeter is smiling in November, the stock market will go up the next year. Let's hope so for this economy.

I always try to be happy for people I like, even when the source of their joy is pain to me. Believe me, I was rooting hard for the Phillies.
As for the team themselves, I'm trying, really trying to be a good guy and not be one of "those Red Sox fans". You know, the delusional ones that act like 86 years of futility, Bill Buckner, and Bucky F'ing Dent never happened.
Damn, I had to remind myself of all of those things, didn't I. Alright, I take it back. Congrats to you as a fan, and fock the Yankees.
There I feel better now.
Thanks for the intervention.

True story: A buddy of mine who grew up in Brooklyn and moved to Boston went to game 7 in Yankee Stadium in 2004. The Yankees lose the game and Jay ends up getting home at like 4am. He has a message from work saying that he needs to be there at 9am. Gets to work all tired and bummed out about the game to find out he's being laid off.
Ouch.
