Terribly sorry for the loss of your friend Brad, he honestly sounded like one of a kind. Your tribute to him here is touching... it's comforting to know he lived his life with such great friends at his side.

Jamie had to deliver some sad news to me yesterday. My good friend and workout partner Billy Funk was killed early Saturday morning in an Auto accident coming back to town from Reno Nevada. The details are still not "factual" but in stead from what I have heard through friends and what not. In fact, it has been hard for me to accept it as I have yet to see it or hear about it except through "hearsay." To my best understanding, he was driving home on Northbound 395 coming from Reno very early in the morning on Saturday when he fell asleep at the wheel. He swerved off the road one way, woke up, corrected, over corrected, and rolled off the road several times. When the accident was discovered, Billy had already passed away.

BIlly was 26 years old and was a graduate from Portola High School. Although he never went to college or trade school, his skills and knowledge were amazing. He could skillfully operate Heavy Equipment like earth movers and bulldozers, frame a house, rebuild an automatic transmission, or repair your craftsman cordless drill. His prize posession was his HUGE Chevy 4x4 that he was completely rebuilding from the ground up. His e-mail "bigchev468" was named after the bored out 454 he had invested thousands of dollars in. Billy and his two brothers, Dan and Ed, started Funk Automotive Repair just a few short months ago and the business was booming. He had told me that in one Saturday they had brought in $4,500.

Billy and I could talk for hours about automobiles

Billy was an athlete. He possessed that freaky farmer strength that came from years and years of manual labor. The kind of strength you get from carrying Engine Blocks, stacks of 2 x 4's and operating jack hammers and ground packers. His physique and strength were the kind that made people question if he were on steroids. Although he was not fantastically co-ordinated, he was a smooth as silk on a motorcycle. Probably from experience and his understanding of motorized vehicles, he could clear doubles with ease and negotiate the trickiest hills.

Billy was a regular Ricky Carmichael

There is no doubt that I am going to miss the heck out of Billy. Tomorrow will be rough I can tell already. We were going to do our first power lifting meet together in 2 short weeks and tomorrow is deadlift day. I will be waiting to hear that lifted Mazda pickup with the KC lights on the front pushbar pull up to the gym. Then expect to see him come swaggering in with his baseball hat, red and black dufflebag in one hand, and coffee with milk in the other. It won't happen though. He loved to workout, and I loved to workout with him. He would attack things with reckless abondon. Almost like he were invincible. I would always play dad and warn him, arch that back on those deadlifts, hold that tuck when you press. He would always nod in agreement, then we would put on another 5 or 10 pounds. I will miss him no doubt. I will miss our long talks after the workout about the same 3 or 4 subjects. Working out, automobiles, eating, or business. We would talk for hours sometimes about the same subject, just finding new angles or new stories to tell. I will miss him telling me about how when he was a kid his family would fire up the generator at night and gather around the TV and VCR watching the same movie or the same epiosode of the Dukes of Hazzard. I will miss listening to his IPOD blasting on the stereo while we workout, training to ACDC, Hank Williams Jr., Van Halen, Def Leppard, Kenny Loggins and all the Rocky Music. I will dearly miss Billy Funk, Vaya con dios my brother.

Thank you Jen. Right now the memories of my friend make me sad, but you are right, there will come a day when we can look back and smile.

We always talked about that trip with fond memories. I too will remember him carrying around that half gallon of milk.

Very well said Nick. I will never question the Lord nor will I resent his actions. I love Him with all my heart, but it makes me that he called Billy home so soon and when he was really in his prime. I know in my heart Billy is having a ball in Paradise, however we will all miss him terribly.

You are so right Eric, he looked so awkward trying to jump on those things. It brings a smile to my face right now thinking about it.

He was so gratefull as was I for that weekend in your home. What a time.

Both of us enjoyed the heck out of that weekend, and we talked to the end about how you reminded us both of a young Sylvester Stallone. He was like you in a way Adam in that what he said was what he meant and he would tell it to you straight.

Great friends and family. I have to say that I feel a little self centered that I am the only one that will miss him. He was very tight with his family and every one he came to meet loved the guy. We will all miss him terribly. Thanks for your kind words Evan.

Unhappy This might get long

Friday 10/30/2009
Our last workout together.....forever.

Intro
We were preparing to do our first powerlifting meet together in 2 weeks and we did more talking this workout than anything. We had a good workout, but it was long. He did not have to get to the shop until 8am so we took our time and even talked about the future. We had talked many times about holding a power lifting meet here in Portola and we were brainstorming right in the middle of the workout. Billy was one hell of an artist and he offered to get to work on several logos that we could put on the T-shirts that we give out to the competitors. That was going to be his job, that and finding local sponsors for the meet. We had not even done our meet, and we were ready to put on one of our own.

Workout Chest

Flat Barbell Presses Warm ups excluded.
Brad 235lbs x 5
Billy 205lbs x 5
These were very strict, practicing our openers
Brad 260lbs x 1 (2 sets)
Billy 225lbs x 1 (2 sets)
These were not
Brad 280lbs x 4 (3 sets)
Billy 225lbs x 4 (3 sets)

Incline Dumbbell Press
Brad 90lbs x 6, 92lbs x 5
Billy 80lbs x 6 (2 sets)

Flat Dumbbell Press
Brad 100lbs x 6, 102lbs x 4
Billy 85lbs x 6, 85lbs x 5

Decline Dumbbell Press We were trying these out for the first time
Brad 60lbs x 8, 70lbs x 8
Billy 60lbs x 8, 70lbs x 8

We did not get done until 7am and Billy left about 7:45. That was that last time I saw him.
I would text him later on that night to see if he wanted to come with us to the WABDL Worlds that were in Reno last weekend, but he texted back that he was just to busy at the shop. He asked to please be sure to text him on Saturday though as he wanted to come with us then. Those were the last words we had.

Nutrition Jamie and I were in Reno Friday watching the Deadlifters at the WABDL Worlds
P-230g + Qdoba Naked Beef Taco Salad and 2 Veggie Corn Tacos from J in the Box
C-200g + Above
F-50g + Above

Monday (Today) 11/2/09
Intro
Today was very tough. I have sobbed more today than I have in a long time. Probably since my Grandma died in 2002. I awoke at 3:45am, my usual time, and knew I was not going back to sleep, so I got up. I ate, checked e-mails, got my food together for the day, prayed, cried, and headed out the door. I knew in my heart he was not coming, but none the less I hoped I would see/hear that Mazda pull up. I parked in my usual spot, shut the car off, and cried in the dark. I headed into the gym and told the one member in there the news. I opened up the gym like I usually do. I kept looking and listening for his Mazda, even though I knew he was not coming. I started to warm up with Kettlebell swings, my ears perking up with every noisy car that drove by. I got out the bar for my deadlifts and started warming up there. Another member came in, he knew the news, we talked for a few moments, I went outside and cried some more. It was a hard workout to get through.

Workout Back
My first without Billy
Sumo Deadlifts
No straps on these
375lbs x 3
415lbs x 3 (2 sets)
Straps on these. Cant believe how much easier.
415lbs x 5

Shrugs
425lbs x 6 (3 sets)

V-bar pull down
200lbs x 6 (2 sets)
200lbs x 6 //SS// Hammer grip pull ups BW x 10

Bent Over Barbell T-Bar row thingys with a hammer grip
4 plates+25+5 x 8 (2 sets) x12 Just went nuts on the last one.

I broke down the bar, put everything away, went outside, and cried uncontrollable for about 5 minutes. The rest of the day I was pretty good. Until I talked to Billys brother Dan. He sounded better than I did, I was crying, he was not. We talked about when the service would be, then he told me that the family wanted to donate Billys Olympic weight set and Bench to me. I accepted with tears running down my face. We hung up, and then I cried again in the locker room for about another 5 minutes.

Nutrition I am suprised how well I am doing. I have had one cheat meal, Saturday after I learned of Billys death, where I had prime rib, 2 baked potatos, salad, bread, some of Xanders fries and cheese burger, and that was it. Sunday, and today I have hit my ratios. I guess during this uncontolable time, it's the one thing I can be control of.

As of now / Goal
PRO:241.5g/260g
CHO:254g/300g
FAT:52.5g/65g

This is going to be a rough couple of weeks. However Jamie, my clients and I have decided to go ahead and do the Powerlifting meet in 2 weeks. He would not have let anything stop him from doing it and I think he would be upset if we let anything stop us. So at least at this point I know for sure that 3 out of the 4 of us will be doing it. We will be doing it for Billy.

Brad, man, I don't know what to tell you...but I know what its like to be where you are at...its eery thinking of watching you compete in the meet knowing that you just lost your friend it reminds me of when you came to support me back in february...and that just makes me think of how lucky I am to have friends like you.

Sounds like you are dealing in a healthy way. I am sorry for your loss. I think it is awesome you are able to share your emotions. I use to not be one to cry or feel feeling but rather try to keep my mind off of them so I wouldn't have to deal. Your doing great and seem to have a lot of support. Take care.

Brad I'm truly sorry to hear about this tragic loss. I say use his memory as some added fuel at that competition and do the lifts in his honor.

Eric the thing that amazes me to this day is at the time, I did not have a clue that your dad had died. Yet you would have never known it. You were as cordial and friendly as ever. You are a strong man and I am trying to draw from that strength now.

It's part of the grieving process and there is no sense in trying to fight it. I wear my emotions on my sleeve and have never had a problem showing my emotions. Thanks for the kind words.

There are 4 of us from Healthy Bodies doing the meet and all of us are doing it in his memory. I know I will be crying if I set any PRs.

Intro
Today was a better day. I only cried once this morning and I just about made it all afternoon. Then I took Xander over to the in-laws and I noticed behind the Funks shop that they had brought Billys Mazda pick home. It's twisted and smashed remains sat on the back of his dads car trailer. It was all I could do to keep from losing it in front of my son. After dropping him off I had to pass back by on the way to the gym and I totally lost it. I cried the whole way to Healthy Bodies. I had a new client to set up so I had to pull it together pretty quick. I've been pretty bummed out ever since.

Workout - Delts

Seated Barbell Overhead Presses
185lbs x 5 (3 sets)
200lbs x 1

Standing Double Kettlebell Presses
53lbs x 6
62lbs x 5 (2 sets)
62lbs x 6

Hammer grip Overhead Tricep Extensions
Did not do. This is when I lost it and had to call it quits. This was the workout that Billy missed last week and for some reason that effected me. Last week he stopped in later in the morning to tell me what happened and said he would not let it happen again. Thinking of that hit me like a ton of bricks and I could not continue with the workout. Hwever, once I let all that emotion out, I was good for nearly the rest of the day.

Nutrition I get to have a big bowl of oatmeal with Natty Peanut Butter and 1/2 scoop VP2. Once I eat it, here will be the total
Pro:261.5g
Cho:301.5g
Fat:66g

Misc Please forgive me for not visiting everyone on the boards. I have just not felt like logging on. I log on once in the morning to check email and make a post on F.B. then at night I'll make my entry here, read a few boards and that's all the emotional energy I can muster. I'll be back to full steam next week,............I hope.

Brad, I never had a chance to meet Billy, but you surround yourself with those like you. Great individuals. I have been thinking of you and just letting you know that we are all here for you no matter what.

Compartmentalization has its upsides

And Brad, I'm thinking of you day in and day out, I've got your back brother. Billy would be proud of you going through with this meet, and you know he wouldnt want his death to stop you. I have a feeling you are going to have some extra strength come the 14th.

Brad, I am so very sorry to hear of this and for your loss. My condolences to you and Billy's family and friends. Working overnight I encounter these incidents all too often (though not always with fatal consequences). Billy sounds like he was a person who impacted you greatly and my prayers go out for his soul.

Eric I don't know why, but this struck an emotional cord with me. I was working out and I read your post and just started balling. I think that is a good thing though as it is part of the grieving process.

You were not at sky jump land Todd, but if you were, you would have seen Billy was as stiff as a board jumping on those trampolines. OH MAN it was funny to watch. I never saw him dance, but I don't think it would have been pretty. Billys last name was more like a professional wrestler type "Funk" than a dancing with the stars type of "Funk"

Intro
My emotional gas tank ran out of gas last night. I was almost numb. I could not cry, could not laugh, could not do anything but just stare at the TV motionless and watch "The Ultimate Fighter." Yesterday was a hard day for some reason, but I got through it and am feeling a little better today. I'm not going into the gym to workout this morning, I'm just hanging out at the house until a little before 7am, then I'll head in, train 6 clients, and at Noon Ronzilla and I are going to train legs.

Workout Chest

Flat Barbell Presses Warm ups excluded
Very strict reps, pausing at the bottom
260lbs x 3 (3 sets)

Overload set, not as strict, but still pretty strict
280lbs x 3

Incline Dumbbell Press
91.25lbs x 5 (2 sets)

Flat Dumbbell Press
101.25lbs x 5 (3 sets)
102.5lbs x 5

Long workout!! Good one though. Felt strong!!! The dumbbells were flying up today and my outer pecs were SUPER swollen. I started at about 0530, and did not get done until 0715. Lots of emotion in this one, crying, rage, joy, you name it. All ends of the spectrum.

PM Workout
35 minutes step aerobics.

Nutrition
P-249.5g
C-305g
F-65g

Misc
Heading in late Thursday and I'm taking Friday off. Probably won't train again until we hit a strength club workout with the "Healthy Bodies Power Lifting Team" Monday.

Flat Dumbbell Press

Long workout!! Good one though. Felt strong!!! The dumbbells were flying up today and my outer pecs were SUPER swollen. I started at about 0530, and did not get done until 0715. Lots of emotion in this one, crying, rage, joy, you name it. All ends of the spectrum.

PM Workout
35 minutes step aerobics.

Strong pressing, Brad. You are a beast!

Stay strong. I lost my best friend a few years back to a motorcycle accident. It was not easy, but it makes you realize how precious every day is. Find comfort in your family and friends. We're all here for you, Brad!

I haven't been on the boards too much these past couple weeks brad, so I didn't see the news till just now. I'm sorry to hear about Billy. As everyone else has said, he sounds like an amazing guy and my prayers and condolences for you and yours and his family. I'm glad to see you still having good workouts and pushing through with your plans. I lift with someone and I know if something happened to me I would be extremely upset if he didn't finish something we had set out to do, so you are doing the right thing for sure. And I have a feeling you'll be finding some extra strength on the 14th and setting a pr or two.

I don't think there is a right or wrong way to deal with a loss. I just feel like I'm doing it the best way I can.

I feel the same way Devin. If the the roles were switched, I would be upset with Billy if he did not follow through.

Damn man...thats rough! My heart goes out to your familes and I'll be keepin ya in my prayers! I know I probably dont need to tell you, but just keep the faith. Know he's in a better place, and know that even though it might not seem like it, the pain will get better with time. Keep your head up buddy...train now for the both of you! Make him pround!

Intro
My emotional energy was drained yesterday and I could not bring myself to get in the gym at my usual time. Ron and I planned on working out at noon and we ended up having a little group workout. Ron and I were training, Jamie came in about 45 minutes after we started and we got her workout in, then Petra, a independent personal trainer who uses the gym, also came in and worked out with us. It was a long, but pretty decent session.

Workout Brad - Legs

Barbell Squats Excluding warm ups
315lbs x 3
325lbs x 3 (2 sets)
345lbs x 1

Hack Squats
310lbs x 5 (2 sets)

Leg Press
560lbs x 6
604lbs x 6

Assissted Split Squats
90lbs x 6 (2 sets)

Workout Jamie - Sq,BP,DL

Barbell Squat
95lbs x 4
115lbs x 3
135lbs x 3
150lbs x 3
160lbs x 2 PR for reps

Bench Press
75lbs x 8
95lbs x 3
110lbs x 3
120lbs x 0

Deadlift
135lbs x 3
175lbs x 3
190lbs x 3 PR for reps
200lbs x 1

Like I said we all had a good workout. The wife set a PR for reps on both her squats and her deadlifts. I am feeling very confident that I will be able to get both 325 and 350 at the meet. Then on to a New PR!!!

I'm taking Friday off from the gym. I'm not going in at all and not training. I will be working at the Hospital in xray, otherwise I am just taking the day off.

Nutrition
Pro:267g
Cho:305g
Fat:66g

Misc - I weighed myself this morning and I am up 1.8lbs. 170.4lbs last week, 172.2lbs today. I'm doing well with these macros. I only had one "Cheat" meal last weekend and today I hit my macros with having a Red Barons french bread pizza.

What's your other lifts going to look like?

Oh and hell of a job to Jamie! Last time she was here 185 was getting in her head bad lol
