Sore after workouts...
Hi,
I am very sore after working out. Its been a long time since I have lifted some iron. What do you do to help with the soreness? For example, after a chest day I find it hard to lift my arms up...
thanks!

All I know about is avoiding soreness...because once you're sore, you're sore.
Make sure that you are stretching out really well after you work out. The stretch may not feel so pleasant, but it will help with the day after blues. hahaha
Also, what I learned in my aerobics class is that what causes soreness is the negative contraction - meaning, on the part that isn't "hard." Like on a bicep curl, bringing your arms back down is the negative contraction.
To minimize soreness, make sure you make your negative contractions as controlled as possible. Otherwise, you'll be paying for it the nest day
Just a few hints for the future.

Hi there-
You may want to try some glutamine for your soreness...

I take a liquid calcium/magnesium everyday...liquid is the best as it absorbs into the system faster. High quality of course, and I usually take it at night before I go to bed. Magnesium is a natural muscle relaxer, and it also assists with the calcium absorbtion into the system...just a thought.

Hmmmm... I know the first couple of days are painful, but I actually like that feeling! Am I weird? If I'm not at least a little sore the day or two after, I don't feel like I worked hard enough!

I agree with you here...and I strive to be sore too. However by the time I am a few weeks out from competition, I am pretty worked, and get DOMS (delayed onset muscle syndrome)...which is where the muscles get sore and are sore all the time - or so it seems...the Glutamine, Calcium and magnisium work wonders at this point...you are right though, depending on your goals, if you are trying to add a little muscle etc then you should strive to be a little sore...

I'd add if you're so sore you have trouble moving, you're probably overdoing it. Maybe you should try backing off a little on your weights. Mild to moderate muscle soreness that you feel mostly when you stretch and that usually peaks the second day after your workout is probably more normal.

Make sure you're fueling your body post-workout...a good protein/carb/bcaa mix should help...to name a few: Anator p70, Torrent, Anabolic Window.
p.s. STRETCH!

Fish oil is a great supplement for DOMS. Carlson's lemon flavored fish oil can be taken by spoon and does not give you "fish belches".

Drink lots of water 2hrs before your workout- drink water during and after. Have two cups of coffee about an hour before you work out. Try glutamine afterward... I think, for me, the coffee has made the biggest difference. There was some study done that said that it helps. I believe it.
