Taurine: A natural method of lowering bloodpressure?

Hey guys,

I'm doing an experiment in my Biochem class. We are testing the effects that taurine has on lowering the blood pressure of people who are hyper/pre-hypertensive.

I've unfortunately been given the task of being the guinea pig because I am pre-hypertensive. My bp hovers in the 138/90-142/90 region.

So I'll be supplementing with Taurine and I'll log my bloodpressure every mon/wed/fri.

I'll log the results here and if it works then I'll let you know.

The first dose starts tomorrow.

why taurine...why not COQ-10

I do not have HBP, but why not here? I like stuff like this, because IMO, prevention is always good.

If Taurine works, then it would probably be a good alternative to CoQ10, because CoQ10 is very expensive.

If ok with the board, I say let him post here. It is interesting.

Edit: Taurine has some side effects and if in synthetic form, can have some undesireable risks. I am betting that Co-Q10 may be more effective. But, this is still interesting.

Taurine is becoming a bit of a wonder supp as we find out more and more about it. With regards to BP its method of effect is, as written up in "Natural News", "Taurine reduces blood pressure by acting as an antagonist to the pressure-increasing effect of angiotensin, a circulating protein that is activated by the hormone renin. When both blood and urine taurine levels decrease, renin is activated and angiotensin is formed, resulting in constricted blood vessels that allow for water and salt retention. Taurine suppresses renin and breaks the renin-angiotensin feedback loop."

For my wife and I Taurine plays several far greater roles. I have taken it successfully at 3 to 6 gms ED along with Beta-Alanine as it is a major component of the macula and has helped restore me to 20/20 vision. My wife first started to use it because it brought relief from her nighttime muscle spasms which tortured her. (I had suggested it because Taurine always seemed to help me lessen my DOMS). Enter Taurine, exit spasms. More importantly, with her Cardiologist's approval she takes it along with mega doses of Omega 3s to help eliminate her Atrial-Fibrulation. Now as she battles both major lung and brain cancer the taurine serves as an aid to her radiation treatments. We've even passed on info on Taurine to our son because it has positive potential for his epilepsy.

The above are personal current uses we have for Taurine. It is perhaps the most surprisingly useful supp we have added in years. It certainly is worthy of consideration by many of us as we pass 35 and battle to optimize our health.

Do you take a specific combination supplement, or do you take multiple, specific supps?

I take multiple specific supps. For my eyes for example, I wanted to improve my vision strength (cataract surgery took care of the cloudiness) and to avoid any onset of ARMD (Age Related Macular Degeneration). I cap my own Taurine and Beta-Alanine (both serve a dual purpose by also supporting my training). I purchase my Lutein from Sam's Club and take 4 X 20 mg ie 80 mg ED along with 2 X 4 mgs of Astaxanthin. When it's on sale I often load up on bottles of 100% pure Goji juice which is the best natural source for Zeaxanthin, which like the prior two items is a great carotinoid for eyecare. In my case I have gone from 3.25 R eye and 3.75 L, to a nice fat 20/20 over several years of supps.

If I look at my training I stack my Taurine/Creatine/L-Arginine/Beta-Alanine for maximum ATP/recovery. I cap all four of them myself. Sounds crazy but it works for me. Nothing spectacular, just steady positive progress despite my age. In both these examples I know there are many products on the market which offer combinations of the same or similar stacks. Hope this helps.

and usually age 35+ is when problems with blood pressure arise.....

X2. This seems like a good place to post it. I've got borderline blood pressure myself, so I'll be following this with some interest.

Great info. Interesting. My eyesight isn't bad, but it's interesting that you credit supps to your improved eyesight.

I won't presume to say it will work the same for everyone. Just it works/-ed for me. By last Nov of 08 my Opthalmologists measured my eyesight at 1.25 and 1.75 and stated that they had never seen anyone improve so much after the age of 60. Last week they said I am now 20/20. Again I had my cataracts replaced to eliminate the cloudiness but the eyestrength is still a formidable gain. I can't describe how good it feels to see as well as half a lifetime ago.

have you checked your diet?

Dairy products, meat, poultry, eggs, and fish are excellent natural sources of taurine.
But supplementation does interest me. most of my protein powders have it anyway though.
I could use the help with the eyes (behind a computer ALL day) and with BP, yeah, that is an issue. and maybe it might help with some of the occassional cramping I have, especially DURING my workouts....yeah, i just might give it a try.

it has gotten to a point though where it appears I eat more supps than whole foods (well, not really)....and that can't be good.

Ok, here we go. There could be some factors that may help the effects of the Taurine (i'm on a cutting diet w/ low sodium) but we'll see how this goes anyway.

I don't expect this stuff to work overnight so i'll give my readings on mon/wed/fri. I will not post on weekends so monday should have a greater change (if any)

They had 1gm capsules but they were an extra $6 for whatever reason, so I stuck with this strength.

4 Nov 2009
BP: 135/88
Time: 1000
Taurine 500mg (X2)

This data is probably worthless b/c its within the same day but i'll post it anyway:

Time 1700 (after working out)
BP: 133/90

we'll see...we'll see.

No, Otousan is the formal, or proper way to refer to a father to include your own.
now, if someone is a father, and is old enough to be your father, otousan could be thought of as informal instead of using the proper name w/ "san".
By the way, "Papa" is popular to use when speaking to your father.

Oh,

I took a year of Japanese at a small Community College here in Northern California.

It was at Butte Community College. The professor was really cool. He had trouble with English so there were times when we were teaching him English words. One thing I liked is that he gave us assignments that Japanese kid would use when they are learning how to write. That helped a lot. He was on a Visa so he had to go back after the end of the second semester which is why I didn't take a 3rd semester.

Unfortunately, i've forgotten a lot of my Japanese. I can still understand simple sentences like the one you wrote, I can read hiragana/katakana but I've forgotten how to write much of it. I use to know abot 50+ kanji but now i'm down to <10. I kept my Japanese text book and the binder with all my assignments so I can go back and relearn it if I want.

However, before Japanese I took 1.5 years of spanish. I figured (especially b/c of my location) I may as well retain a language that is relavent to where I live. I don't want to forget Japanese though:

Tuv? thres a?os de espa?ol en la esquela secundaria, entonces cuando fu? a collejio de Butte tuv? un y medio a?os...

question marks were where the accented letters are suppose to be. Those are very important ...I learned that the hard way...

lets just say anos means "anus", but if you put the accent over the "n" it becomes "year"

I'll be watching this to as my BP is borderline high.

But I noticed your BP didn't seem to change after a workout. Normally at rest my BP is 120/80 or a little higher.. At the doctor it's 140/95 (white coat syndrome).

After a workout my BP drops to about 117/72. I would have thought it would be up after a workout.. guess not! (it also goes down after sex and cannibus.. or both together.. lol)
