buying first gi?

So I am looking around online right now for my first gi to attend my first class. Seems like the average price is around 100 to 120 bucks. Does color matter much? What about all the patches? I can't seem to find just a plain gi with no patches on it. Will people take it the wrong way if some new dude has all these patches on his gi? Also recommendations for getting the right fit? I am cutting right now so hopefully will be down from 220 to like 190 maybe less. I am assuming the gi will be necessary on the first day of class as it is a gi class? Thanks for any help.

Try to get a white or blue gi. Some instructors get offended when people where black or multi colored gis.

I was thinking of a plain blue gi but like I said most seem to have some sort of patches on them. Will the patches bother the instructor?

It probably depends on the instructors but i doubt many of them care. If you like the patches go for it.

stick with a white or blue gi, if you end up competing most comps wont let you compete in any other colour.

I love my Fuji gi! Fits great and is the best gi I have ever owned.

Ordered this from Kodokan Gear for a steal of a price at $59. They advertise it as being a true BJJ cut and they deliver on that promise.

As you can see from the pictures it's cut tightly in all the right places, but it still gives plenty of room for full range of movement. It's a single weave, but as with the rest of the Gi, it feels extremely sturdy with a underlying sense of quality craftsmanship behind it.

I also included a picture of the lapel in comparison to my Keiko Raca and the difference in relatively negligible considering that the Fuji was half the price. The Gi also comes with a set of four patches, two large and two small, to place wherever you choose.

The pants are the perfect thickness, and will definitely hold up to punishment, but aren't uncomfortable. They are also more thickly padded at the knee. Hopefully the review and pictures will help you guys in your Gi buying decisions. I would very much recommend this Gi to anyone. 10/10 - perfect as far as I can tell.

P.S. This is after one wash and one dry, both at the hottest settings, in order to shrink a little for the perfect fit.

whites ur best bet. if not then blue (will fade some, but not nearly as bad as black). dont buy unbleached. best fit is lucky gi, but expensive. best summer hot weather gi is vulkan. koral and atama are good starting gis, atama being thicker, at affordable prices. and remember if its too big wash first time in cold water and let it air dry. if its still too big wash in warm water and let air dry. if still too big wash in warm water and dry in dryer checking it every now and then. after it fits right wash cold and air dry.

Get blue, white will get visibly dirty alot faster. and about the patches, most look good and you should just leave it on and not tamper with the gi unless you really have to.

but for example i had a massive patch on the knee area and it really bothered me so I just took it off (really simple) and you could do that aswell if you feel you need to.

Make sure you buy a bjj gi , most other gi's will have a seem through the back which after a while on your back will be quite irritating .

if you are buying online, ask around about the fit of the brand you buy. you will be surprised at how differently gis will fit, even though they are the same size (you would prolly be A3).

best color to get is white or blue. if you plan on entering tournaments, ibjjf says that white, blue and black are the only colors accepted.

there are alot of brands out there, so try to find something you like visually and with the price you can afford. ive had all kinds of gis and for the past couple of years, ive stayed with koral gis. just last week i bought a keiko raca gi and it fit and felt awesome. needless to say im buying a couple more keiko gis.

one more thing, if you plan on training multiple times a week, you might consider buying a couple of pairs, unless you like washing your gis everyday.

good luck!

HCK and Fuji are good choices for a first gi. Cheap, durable and not too flashy. I don't personally give a **** what color someone wears, but some people do, so generally I'd stick with white or blue until you get a sense for what your school allows.

And like the guy above me says.....if you're training more than 2X per week, get more than one gi. Especially if you don't want to use a dryer. Most gi's need at least 1 full day to hang dry.

Padilla and Sons gold weave. Only 90 dollars and you can speak to the owner personally so you can get proper shrinking instructions and sizing. If you go for a Padilla and Sons, make sure you talk to Joe Padilla before ordering. They size a bit differently.

Unbleached?

I'd go with atama. Durable yet lightweight. http://www.atama-kimonos.com/index_enter.htm
The mudials are really nice. I think I am going blue next. I've used HCK's but I don't like the pants as much. the gi top is super thick and durable. Everyone says the collars are harder to hcoke people with but I've never had a problem.

I got Fuji and Mizuno whites...they were between $40-60 each. No regrets with either one. I'd spend less and get another one at that price if you plan on training gi more than a couple times a week. Get your size right, and keep those gis washed!
