Exfoliate! :)
Proper and regular exfoliation is a CORNERSTONE to having radiant and fresh skin. You don't want to over-scrub or use damaging products, though, so be careful of how you go about it. But you are correct, OP. NOTHING that you put ON your skin is as powerful or as important as what you put IN your skin.
My slogan is FEED YOUR FACE- literally. Many girls (and guys) have issues with breakouts, skin texture, rough patches, etc. Proper nutrition goes a LONG way to correcting that. Something as simple as a fatty acid deficiency or imbalance can make a noticeable difference in the outward appearance of your skin.
The biggest thing that you can do on a regular basis though is to EXFOLIATE! Slough off those dead skin cells so that they don't sit around and clog your pores or cause other issues.

As well as what's already been said - water! Boring, I know, but my skin looks great when I'm well hydrated.

Nutrition has little effect on many people. I eat VERY healthy, work out 5 days a week, drink heaps of water and still have poor skin... genetics play a greater roll than anything.

Nutrition makes a difference for me, but I don't have to cut out all carbs. Just have to keep everything geared toward whole foods and drink lots of water.
If you are already prone to hormonal acne, you'll likely notice a difference between "adding logs to the fire" and "taking them away" so-to-speak. There is a link between a raise hormone (androgen) levels and a diet based on foods with a high glycemic load (processed carbs/sugars).
So far as making sure you have healthy fats, the trick there is to not only make sure that you have enough fat in your diet, but to also make sure you have a good balance of Omega 3's to 6's in your diet. Guess what may be a contributer to having an imbalance between the two? Relying too heavily on processed foods that are generally more likely to have omega 6's and be lacking in omega 3's.
There are obviously tons of other acne causes, but that explains a little bit about why some people may notice a distinct difference in the behavior of their skin based on eating processed carbs and sugar and not.

Yes and no
I notice when im getting enough water/regularly taking my vitamins/ washing twice a day and NOT PICKING my skin rocks. Some cleansers dont work with everyone. I notice when i have good moisturizer also my skin glows. After trying pro-active clearasil and a bunch of other i products i found St.Ives exfoliating black head remover works for me. And I use nivea lotion with the hint of summer or whatever. It gives your complexion a good look!

Water really does help- not so much with acne, but just giving that overall "glow"
If you have acne, look for cleansers that contain "salicylic acid" - that's what any dermatologist will tell you...I really like Neutrogena products, especially the "Oil Free Acne Wash", though I find that in the winter (I'm up in Canada), it does leave my skin a little dry/tight, so I use a gentle moisturizer after.
I do get the once-a-month breakouts though! Usually on my chin! Yuck

Like everyone else has said drink plenty of water, cleanse and tone daily and get yourself a really good moisturizer.
You need to keep your skin hydrated to keep it healthy and glowing.

The best moisturizer I've found that keeps my skin clear AND hydrated is Mary Kay's Velocity. They also make a really good face wash. Smells really yummy, too. Everybody is different though, so I'd experiment and find the product that works for you.

Does anyone know about eye care/wrinkle prevention?? I was watching one of those consumer-type shows, and they were doing a comparison of eyeliners/mascara, and as they went to apply the different brands, the host told off one of the girls for pulling down her bottom lid with her finger to apply the eyeliner, claiming that the skin around the eye is delicate and that rubbing eyes, pulling the skin, etc would cause wrinkles...and now I'm kinda paranoid! :-)

I've been plagued with bad skin my whole life - eating clean, drinking tons of water and NOT touching my face makes the biggest difference.
I also found that washing my make up brushes, tossing used sponges after a few uses, and disenfecting my cell phone have curbed my cheek area break outs. Cell phones are a huge breeding ground for bacteria and keeping them up against your face can cause a lot of that to transfer.

Exfoliating using either Salycylic acid, or an Alpha Hydroxy helps to unplug pores and sloth off dead skin.
Retinoids help to normalize pores and will thus help stop comedones (which if they get inflamed lead to papules and pustules).

Mine too!
My skin also breaks out when I cut out carbs, even with a good skin care routine and plenty of water, but I have a thyroid condition (dont know if thats relevant to the situation) I also noticed BCAA makes mine worse too, not sure why!? Hope you find an answer! for both of us..

I use zinc tablets and liquid omega-3 and I've seen massive improvement.

Ever since I started supplementing with Salmon Oil capsules - my skin has been smoother than a baby's bum. When I went to the hairdresser the other day, she commented on how beautiful my hair is.
She even said it was thicker - which for me is a massive compliment, as I have pretty limp ass hair.
Sugary foods are what used to give me breakouts... As soon as I cut out soda, my skin improved out of sight.

I would say healthy living.
But something people overlook is what they use on their face. I found that staying away from harsh, drying soaps made a difference as they throw your skin's pH all out of whack. Especially things with a frangrance. For me, using a gentle non-scented soap like Dove for sensitive skin or Cetaphil and following that with a light unscented mositurizer like Dove unscented for sensitive skin has stopped my breakouts cold. Unless I eat too much sugar.
And exfoliation is nice but sometimes skin can't take the stimulation- i usually exfoliate once every 1 to 2 weeks.

okay...recently I rec'd the BEST skin care advice while on these boards by a fellow poster. I was skeptic at first, however, figured I would give it a shot because my skin is prone to break out and pretty oily on a daily basis (I used those oil blotter sheets a few times a day). Now that I use this method, I NEVER have oily skin and my skin has NEVER been clearer! I STRONGLY recommend it to anyone!!!
I use 50% castor oil and 50% evoo...

Repped! I do this occasionally with just EVO and it makes my skin sooo nice. Usually when I don't feel like using my moisturiser. Will have to try it with the castor oil now!

I always hated my skin and nothing ever seemed to work. For years, I spent a lot of money on expensive face wash products like Proactive and they all seemed to stop working after a week or so.
What really helped me was much simpler. I just make sure I keep hydrated, take vitamin B complex and get my omega 3s. The Omega 3s definitely made the biggest difference for me. I use Neutrogena face wash like Blackhead eliminating daily scrub and visibly even foaming cleanser. I like those ones because they gently exfoliate my skin and the blackhead eliminating one is my favorite. Then I use toner and finish up with Olay moisturizer. Pretty easy!
As other's stated previously, make sure to wash your makeup brushes with antibacterial soap every week and keep your pillowcase and phones clean! Also, try to not touch your face unless you've just washed your hands.
Oh, I almost forgot...I found that when i started eating clean and took out all processed foods (mostly ones with corn syrup and hfcs) that my breakouts weren't as severe. Now if I break out, I know it's most likely a type of allergic reaction to something I ate (from not knowing/watching the ingredients). I'll take an antihistamine and fish oil caps (or I'll eat sashimi) and the little bumps that hadn't matured yet disappear the next morning.

I used to break out really badly until I did two things and now I may get a pimple a year.
One I changed a brand of make up that doesn't suffocate the skin and has no harmful substances in it.
Worked absolute wonders!!
Two: I agree with exfoliating - I only ever use finely ground almonds with a bit of warm water to wash my face.
Leaves skin fresh and glowing.
oh and I feed it with a couple of drops of an oil blend - almond, rose and sandalwood for my skin type splashed on with warm water.
You really feel nice when you use natural stuff on your skin aye?

i use to use rosehip oil, it works a treat, i assume its similar to the oil blend you use...
so with your exfoliant do make your own, or is it a prebought mix???
