Hamstring Tear

I was squating the other day and felt a strain in my inside of my upper thigh, hamstring. Now its bruised and tender. I'm going to the ortho today, but was wondering if anyone here ever tore a hamstring and how long it took to comeback. Thanks for any help.

I haven't personally, but Ed Koo tore his pretty badly on July 4th at USPF Nationals and he's training again, but says he'll be able to go full bore in December.

now, he tore his hamstring completely off the bone and a chunk of bone came with the tendon, so it was a bad one.

Thanks for the info, I don't think I did anywhere near that damage. I can walk normally and lower to a squat position fine, it starts to hurt when I try to rise up from the squat. It just sucks cause I was making good progress with my squat and deadlift. Looks like a lot of bench, tricep, and shoulder work are in my future.

Yeah if I don't get a rehab program, I'll probably use Bill Starr's two week rehab program.

ehh, its part of the game. I hope it'll never happen, I'll take what precautions I can against it, but the only way to avoid it is to not lift or not push myself...and that's not gonna happen.

It is possible. Its hard to tell without observing, palpating, or doing manual muscle tests but from the sounds of it you have really good ROM and strength (when referring to your self tests).

Its hard to tell from my standpoint, but if you do in fact have a tear then it does not sound very bad. Most hamstring tears are pretty harsh and most people who get them would not have the same ROM and strength as you are describing (from my experience).

having torn my pec it certainly is always in the back of my mind, but you know what like Bill said, if you never want to experience an injury then you should never even get out of bed in the morning. I know Dave Goodin (top natural bodybuilder) tore his hamstring just tripping over something in his hotel room and he tore his bicep helping a friend move into his new home LOL. So if you never want to get injured then never ever do any activity. It's just something that happens sometimes. You do what you can to prevent against it... stretch, stay warm, don't make huge jumps in PR attemps faster than what your body is ready for. In Ed's case i'm not sure if walking out the weight is something that he has trouble with because it looked like 650 was pretty difficult for him two, I've never really had a problem but then again I've never squatted over 600 and i've never used a suit so those are two factors that could complicate it. For the most part the best thing to do is just be aware of it and acknowledge the fact that it could happen. hell you could be killed in a car accident everytime you get in your car; that doesn't stop you from driving though does it? It just makes you more cautious. Same thing here

it's most likely a partial tear in the muscle belly but you'll need to get an MRI to confirm

not to preach but you need to find a way to get insurance. get something with a high deductible like an HSA where the monthly payment is low. But you need to cut out any extra lifestyle (movies, eating out, supplements even) to be able to afford it. you cannot afford to be without it. Forget lifting; imagine if you got diagnosed with a horrible disease and didn't have insurance. don't think it can't happen to you because you are 21. I know it's expensive, but I would put it damn near right after food and shelter as the next most important thing.

if you have to get it on your own i'd recommend looking into an HSA with a high deductible

Got back from the ortho, likely strain or small tear. Recommended light weights high reps, and Physical Thearpy if I wanted to go. Said the ultasound equip and electronic stimulation could help it heal faster. Once again thank for all the input an help.
