Why I really enjoy talking to the younger crowd about these issues. Expectations, realistic goals, and the healthier routes to them. Healthier physcially and mentally.
i'm curious as to what you tell kids about expectations. Suppose a kid comes to you and says he wants to play in the NFL. Obviously the likelihood of this happening is slim to none, even though the kid may be a decent athlete. Its a tough call. I just ask because my best friend from 5yrs - 14 yrs old was Brian Cushing (Rookie LB on Houston Texans) and EVERYONE told him he had no chance. No chance to play on the best high school team in the area, no chance to play on a D1 school, no chance to start at USC, no chance to make it to the NFL. Yea, he loved proving people wrong all the way through haha.

I get to do this every day. I'm a teacher so I get to interact with kids daily. I talk to a lot of the athletes about lifting, getting bigger, eating right, ect. It's a really good feeling to help them out both physically and mentally. IMO, if kids knew how to eat correctly, lift effectively, ect... they would do much fewer dangerous/risky/desperate things to achieve their goals. Sadly, there aren't many people out there to help these kids hungry for knowledge and results.

Brian Cushing has become one of my favorite NFL players, because I followed his training at DeFranco's gym.
The guy is a monster.

lulz at everything, especially the guy drinking 1 egg white
But I've actually known guys who are like this; they just need to be educated on how things work IMO. AND need to realize girls don't really care about a physique as much as they think
So are you saying that teenage girls are looking for substance in a guy?
I completely agree with you if that 'substance' is a cool car, designer clothes and directions to the next party
The reality of what teenagers THINK they know is about -98% compared to what they really do. Which really is as it should be. If teens were as bright as they thought they were. The remainder of their lives would be super boring.

I would never discourage anyone. Going to go Plato on you.."Never discourage anyone who makes progress, no matter how slow." No matter how far from reach the goal might be. You can however discuss the probabilities, and the importance of having more than one passion, and why this might come in handy. You might even wake up one day and decide, I don't like this sport anymore.

Now about proving others wrong, and focusing your energy in such a manner. I have never been a fan of that. The best inspiration is internal, sure the other way works, but its only a matter of time before you look around and wonder if this was for you. What was is it all for?
Not to mention it is in my opinion not the best source of energy to gather from. There are more effective ways to be inspired.

I know sports in general helped me a great deal. I was in for the lack of a better term "troubled" growing up. Far more than you can ever imagine, to put in bluntly I was smoking the front lawn in the boys bathroom when I was in 5th grade. It only got worse from there, but a few years later I found sports. Not only did they give something to do, but it made me look at that "role model" on the block, and realize. I don't want to be like you. Which is a big reason I am working with children in Oakland now, they really need to see that there are much more options than the "reality" they see everyday.

Girls in high school...What can I say. Some cisco, a car(didn't even have to be my own), and it was game over! Oh and I was down with what they called OPP.
But you are right, if I knew better I would not have had as much fun. Pass the mirror please. I keed..I keed!
But...I can relate to a degree. Sometimes there is too much info online that its hard to sift through it. Learning how to learn, is a whole different skill.

you'd be surprised how many think that it's hard to tell if you're losing weight because they gain so much muscle at the same time
Don't even say anything, the master cleanse. I have a couple folks at work doing this.
PUSH POWER later today. Woke up this morning and felt HUGE! Just one of those days. Hopefully it transfers into something good tonight.
Just watched this and it got me pumped. Walter Payton AKA Sweetness!
Oh and the partialness towards Walter Payton. Dude was not the fastest, nor the strongest, physically nothing that resembles a specimen, came out of small school.
Neverthought about the limitations, as you can see he just kept running forward. Break them tackles, and keep those legs churning.
Payton fan. Him and Jerry Rice, I simply adored as kid.
I simply don't see anyone in the NFL play with that type of desire and passion anymore. The cutbacks, the high steps, and never wanting to go down. The goal line dives, risking his body.
The Bears recently honored him at the halftime show Sunday. It's been 10 yrs since he passed away.

Desire and passion! We don't see that anymore, going to go shop around for Payton jerseys later.

You see him ride Lott into the end zone!?
Always loved to read about him running this huge sandy hill by his home...barefoot!
Talked about the sand getting so hot his feet would blister.
Sweet...melted feet
You know how makes ALL his players run hills right? I'll give you a hint, he coaches for the niners. Wait! Didn't he play with...!? ;P

You need to watch a Vikings game. Adrian Peterson.

That's really awesome that you do that. Kids really need someone to look up to. When I was young, I was the geeky, shy kid with glasses who was just waaay to tall and skinny. It was a difficult and painful time where I hated going to school every day. In those early years I got picked on and didn't have much self-esteem until I found the right sports. Sports gave me an identity, self-esteem, developed discipline and hardened me. I owe a lot to a few specific adults who helped "show me the way".
Anyways, I guess this this is why I wanted to become a teacher and coach. Help those kids out through tough times in their lives, much like a few special people helped me find myself. I guess that's what drives me. I'm glad you've taken the opportunity to do the same thing for kids that could really benefit from your presence.

Alright,

when I am not on these boards I still think about stuff I read in here and the guys on the logs (woah) I might even drop a name from here in a casual conversation with my woman...... like "Man, I wonder what berto did to get shredded like that" So today on my drive home I was tryin to figure out your game plan Berto. I know you won 2 pro cards in 2 seperate divisions, but past that I am clueless. are you cutting right now for a show? or bulking? or doing a mini cut? I am confused and it would take me way to long to read thru the million posts to figure out. So if you wouldnt typing out a game plan so I can feel part of the show.

You don't just do that to Lott! And YUP! Jerry running hills was something that was passed down to him from people who played with Sweetness.

Now Peterson is a stud, but Payton is something else. A 13 year career in the NFL and only missed ONE game. As a running back that is insane, simply because you touch the ball so much. Peterson is your prototype, Payton was sheer will. Let's wait 10 years and we can compare. Most running backs go dud after 6-8 years. Simply because of all the touches, it adds up to plenty of wear and tear.

Everyday, I go home, and I know I did something todays that matters. Just like yourself, I am thankful for those who helped me out. I still talk with my old high school guidance counselor to this day. He was crucial to my development, and helped me out of a couple instances were the path I would have taken might not have been reversible.
