Chicken=diet food. 80% lean=too much fat. basically ground up fat with a little red meat mixed in for color. Spend another .50-.70 lb and buy some bottom round, or if lucky, top round steak.

Yeah, depends on how much fat you want in your diet. 80/20 Ground Beef is cheap, but it may be better for you to pay a little more for 85/15, 90/10 or 93/7. Also, I like ground turkey, you can buy it lean (93/7) as well. I can eat turkey burgers all day.

I make several things (chicken, ground beef, ground turkey) ahead of time so i can mix it up every meal.

I'd go chicken - but then again I'm trying to get rid of some fat so meat that is 20% fat is like 2 steps back for me

Red meat over chicken any day (both red meat and chicken is better)......but I would go for a leaner red meat......atleast 90% lean.....

IMO.......the only time 80% is ok on a regular basis is if your on a keto.....

Couldn't you fry the 80% beef until the fat melted and then drain it off?

Wouldn't that reduce the fat content considerably?

If I had a choice, I'd go beef cos I prefer the flavour and texture but I'd always drain the fat off.

yes.........draining or pressing the meat between paper towels helps a ton as far as getting rid of some of the fat........

by all mean......yes.......red meat is by far a much better meat to build muscle with.....

Well I'd end up grilling both, and the hamburger would flame up like crazy with that much fat. I'd likely buy the beef though just because I prefer red meat to chicken, but then why not buy both? You're going to eat it anyways............

I'd go for the ground beef just for the sake of variety, but half a chicken boob has 1g of fat and 27g of protein, while a cooked 1/2lb of 80% ground chuck has 40g of protein and 26g of fat. Cholesterol for the beef is 133mg, while the chicky is ~56mg.

(source:www.nutritiondata.com)

*I am approximating the cholesterol on the chicken because I'm not 100% sure I went back to the same piece of meat for the cholesterol.

The fat isn't an issue with me & I suck enough of it out with the turkey baster when cooking. Guess I primarily fall on the 'red meat' side too. Been eating eggs like crazy but still feel like I've OD'd on chicken breasts even after a long layoff. Just was curious how others would choose.

Sure, but consider by the time you're done the weight has dropped thus your cost per lb has doubled...just buy steak.

I like variety, that way I get a good balance. Beef/eggs for breakfast and lunch. Chicken for dinner.

Steak and eggs and eggs and steak, thats what you should eat for breakfast..(from Family Guy).

Reading the old Weider books you see alot of beef and eggs. Its old school but it has its place for sure.

OK, so chicken breast: Skinless?

If you drain the fat off the beef, you'll have about 13oz right?

Grams of protein per lb of each meat, then choose. I'd buy some of both. Even Filet steak will taste like dog**** if you eat enough of it.

Although if you asked be to choose between burgers or fajitas, I'd be completely stuck.......

Variety is the spice of life

Buy both, and some lean steak and ground turkey and tuna and....you get the picture.

If you've got to choose one, be sure to keep above post in mind...80% burger loses a good portion of it's weight when cooked/drained. Not quite as good of a deal when you consider that. But whatever, if it's gotta be one: which are you gonna be able to stomach day after day after day? wont do you much good if you cant stick to it.

which brings me back to my first point

Grams of protein per lb of each meat, then choose. I'd buy some of both. Even Filet steak will taste like dog**** if you eat enough of it.

Although if you asked be to choose between burgers or fajitas, I'd be completely stuck.......
Cook chicken w skin on to keep juicy, i give skin to the dog. Skin is the fat.

Must disagree..never would tire of filets.

I like the top round steak. You can chop it up and put it in your food processor to make your own hamburger OR ditch both and eat possum. Not sure what the fat content is in possum, but you can find them free by the highway all the time.

Here you go, bud..don't know the grams of fat per serving, but lead content might be high.

I would get a mix of the two. On occasion I like to eat buffalo when it is available.

Spent $40 on boneless short ribs at Costco on Sunday and I'm 2/3 done with the first pack. Only reason I won't finish it tonight is that I have dinner plans.

Red meat all the way (and yes I trim as much fat as I possibly can).

When Granny Clampett left the . . . mansion, I'm sure she took her recipes with her, so I'll pass. Besides, it probably tastes like. . . chicken.

Thumbs up Slow Cook the Beef!!!

Ground beef for sure. I just made a pot of chili last weekend with some 80/20. I slow cook the beef in a pot until it is all cooked. While hot I take the pot and drain out all of the fat that comes out, into a bowl. Then mix in canned diced tomato's and any ingredients you wish. There is ALOT of fat that comes out when you do this.

I know I'm bumping an older thread, and yes I'm aware that I'm not 35+, but this thread is relevant to what I've been thinking about.

I could save a lot of money by going to a higher fat ground beef, instead of the 93/7.

However, I'm concerned with how much calories I'm going to lose with the amount of fat that is lost in the cooking process.

How do you guys go about determining the amount of cals in the meat after it's been cooked?

Thank you.
