it was all going so well, then an injury!
Its been 11 months since I began my lifestyle overhaul and made some nice changes.
I train krav maga (its like martial arts) 3 times a week and do resistance work 3 times a week....well until now that is.
I tore a ligament in my shoulder doing Krav maga and I think its gonna be maybe 2-3 months of no training at all of the upper body. Im continuing to train legs, glutes, abs with no extra weights and my instructor has advised me to start running to maintain my fitness level whilst im out- I definitely dont want my fitness to suffer whilst my shoulder recovers.
Heres the thing, I dont particularly like running but im willing to do it... I just REALLLY don't want my body to wither away and get soft. I think I will have to be running 3 times a week, (and I'm keeping up the lower body work) but I want to hold onto as much muscle and definition I have now.
Its rlly thrown me off course and Im unsure whats the best thing to do.
Any advice or suggestions ? Thanks

i'm bummed to hear you got injured :-( i hope some others who have had a shoulder injury will have some advice.
i don't think running 3/wk will make you too soft as long as it's not longer than 45mins/day.

Sorry about the injury. Once you can work upper body again you'll get everything back faster the second time around, so don't worry. Lower body obviously won't be a problem as you can still train legs. As for running, 3x week of about 30 minutes won't hurt you. Just keep your nutrition in line.
Heal fast!!

Thanks so much for the advice and the kind words- I was feeling quite low about it. Diet is staying firmly in check- and just gonna do the best I can for now.

I feel your frustration.
I also started this new way of life in Jan 09 and in Aug suffered a serious injury to my right leg.
Broken bone, multiple fractures and some damaged ligaments in my knee and ankle.
I couldn't cook, clean, or drive for weeks. The diet went out the window and i lost a lot of muscle in my right leg of course and some on the rest of my body. Learning to walk again is an interesting experience.
I just started back at the gym and back on my diet 3 weeks ago and i must admit, my fitness level felt like it was before i started training in Jan 09, but my body is bouncing back very quickly. I've gained over half my muscle back in my right leg and i can see and feel the muscle coming back on the rest of my body.
Do what you can with the rest of your body and keep your diet in check. I think you'll be amazed at how your body will sustain those months of your hard work.

I feel your pain (literally) as I dislocated my shoulder on Tuesday. I am contemplating a surgery that would put me out of the game for 4-6 months! Yikes! The way I see it, at least it's winter, right? We can come back strong and motivated in the spring, and just try not to lose too much progress. I think this winter I'll be putting the "diet is 90%" to the test!

So sorry about ur shoulder, 4-6 months is a long time, but I guess when it comes to ur physical health, u gotta do the best thing for ur body. I agree though, its winter so its not the biggest deal, bring on the big coats, scarves and knee-high boots. What does ur decision about surgery depend on? Its a good time for recovery, I really hope you'll have a quick healing time.

Thats really terrible about ur leg, its definitely serious when the legs get an injury. Its good that ur still fit and that ur regaining muscle mass. Its such a big deal when anyone decides to change their life and get fit and eat right, that when u get an injury, it can be a really big knock to eveything ur about. Keep fighting back though!

Thanks. My decision primarily depends on if I'm pregnant I just started trying, so if I was successful this month, then I can't get surgery. Either way, bodybuilding will be taking a backseat to other things this winter. I should know in about a week.
