Meagan tries CrossFit

Well I have been training for about 3 years now. And I have made pretty dece progress. From about 170 lbs, to 140lbs.. i dont know my bodyfat percentage loss.. but i went from size 12 jeans to size 3-7 (depending where i buy them)..
I have been happy with the results, but in the last say 8 months i have really plateaued.. I add things in to my work out, drop maybe a lb or 2 but stay essentially the same.
I eat 95% clean. I however know I do not eat enough. SO i am consistantly working on that. \
I did some research years ago when i first started training, and my goal physique was/is to look like Demi Moore in striptease.. the typical look girls go for.. fantastic legs, abs, great ass.. silicone boobs would be nice too, but out of my price range.. haha
anyways, when i searched for info on how she got into shape for striptease and g i jane, i found numerous references to Cross Fit.

It intimidated the hell out of a newcomer like me.. so i just forgot about it.
With my recent plateaus i have decided to finally give it a shot. I signed upfor CrossFit boot camp, which started monday.

I took this week off the regular gym.. dedicating myself to crossfit for the week, and then i will probably hit the regular gym2-4 times a week outside crossfit, just to do some extra cardio, and maybe some extra weights.. if i can take it.

so day #1 -
Intro to CrossFit

We got some basic information.. and learned squatting techniques.
Our WOD (workout of the day) was -

35 squats (body weight)
350m Row
3rnds for Time (this means you do it 3 times, without stopping)

it took me 15 minutes 26 seconds

Day #2 -
Learning about THRUSTERS (ugh)
on this day we learned proper tech for overhead press, push press, thrusters and abmat situps. I like the abmat cause you can really feel the situps.. more than a reg sit up. more fluid motion. I hate thrusters more than anything hahaha.

WOD

25 Thrusters w/15lbs dumbbells
50 Abmat Situps

my time was 14 minutes 21 seconds

Day #3
Active Rest Day

today we learned about the warm up we are to do each day before we do our WOD
I really enjoyed todays class, not cause it was easy but because I am pumped about the warm up. One of my goals for myself (besides having abs) is to be able to do a full pull up without assistance. oh and to be able to do the hanging ring dips.. so cool.

warm up as follows
8-10 reps

Pull Ups
Dips
Push Ups
Sit Ups
Back Extension
Over Head squats
Samson stretch

I feel like its 3 sets of 8-10, but i dont remember at all. hahaha


Tmr when i goto class I was told to start immediately with my warm up and then we will move into the days lesson. I am so freaking into this. I am just hoping I see positive results. not negative.
Its very hard to wrap my head around doing 20 minutes of intense workout, as opposed to 2 hours of moderate workout..

Day #4

Today we learned more rowing techniques. 2 new guys showed up for bootcamp yesterday and they were there again today. I like it. Friendly competition.

I have to say, we may have learned warm up yesteday, but holy hell my chest hurts like you wouldnt believe today.. i mean, i have trained chest specifically and not felt these burns before.. awesome.

I have been struggling with the idea of not trainingfor 2+ hours a day. I asked my xfit instructor today if i could goto the gym over the weekend. in less words than he used, "no".

i told him I will be doing cardio. and thats that. hahahaha.
I have been told that i cannot lift weights till after bootcamp is done. he wants me to give bootcamp my all. ok. I can do that. But I love doing stairs, its therapeutic for me... so i will be doing that a few times a week.

today we did warm up

jumping pull ups (cause i cannot doing my body weight yet)
sit ups
push ups
dips
back extension
samson stretch

(i just realize i forgot to do my over head squat. balls)

then we did 500m row for time x3

set #1 2min2sec
2 min rest
#2 2min10sec
5 min rest
#3 2min1sec


I AM DETERMINED TO GET BELOW 2 MIN NEXT TIME!! that would put me into the intermediate athlete category..

Im not too upset with my time, seeing as it was the first time i have ever rowed in my life. haha




i really do feel like a lard ass these days. its mentally very challenging.

Day #5

Week one of CrossFit bootcamp is over. wow.
I really do miss the real gym, but mostly for the therapeutic aspects of it. I am going to add 4 or 5 days of cardio in next week, just to get that stress relief back in my life.

Today was awesome, I really enjoyed it, except one aspect..
We started with reg warm up. My body is super sore today.. Pull ups were a challenge.. even the jumping ones I do.. haha

We then learned about Tabata..

WOD - TABATA THIS!!

pull ups
push ups
sit ups
squats

each exercise was done for 8 sets of 20 seconds, as many as we could do. If we couldnt do 10 in 20 seconds we were to scale down the movement and make it a little easier. When we were starting I thought, "oh this is just silly!! 20 seconds!" EFF THAT.

Dave (instructor) turned up the music, and told us to GO! (I Really like this man, even though we have a little bit of potentially odd history...)

The way we were to scale this was the lowest number of reps we did in 20 seconds was our score.

so mine went,
pull ups - 9
push ups - 8 ****
sit ups - 8
squats - 10

**** - i ended up sort of straining my neck a bit.. which hindered my push up ability. worst muscle head ache ever. eff.

By the end of 32 rounds of this, we were all dripping sweat. but it was good!! i enjoyed it.

He gave us homework for the weekend - Complete warm up on saturday and sunday.. and he said we could go for a brisk walk, or a little light cardio (im doing revolving stairs cause i misssss them)


today, my chest, back, right calf muscle (????) hurt.. but not too intensely.

I have a feeling next week will be 10x worse than this week. and I am excited/scared/anxious about it.

He also asked us to keep a food log this weekend. I do not eat the CrossFit way, which is Paleo or the Zone diet.. I am not THAT far off of it.. but I eat oatmeal for breakfast. And I have dairy before bed. And i am NOT giving up those two things. for anyone, or anything.. haha

Well today was a painfully easy crossfit day.. lol. We talked about nutrition. Which is one of my favourite topics..
Crossfitters, the hardcore believers, follow Paleo. If you are unfamiliar with Paleo, its also known as the caveman diet.. so they dont believe in eating processed food. So no whey, no dairy, no breads or pastas..There are certain advantages and disadvantages to the diet, like all diets I suppose.

I could never give up dairy.

anyways,
Luckily my trainers gf is a dietician or something.. and he believes that cutting out whole food groups isnt the best option.. yesss... haha. at least i dont have to argue about my oatmeal and quark.

He did encourage me to try to give up artificial sweeteners.. which I have wanted to do for a while..


we did do warm up.. my neck bothered me a little less today.. so i think its just a strain and it will go away on its own.

After i got home i felt like doing my warm up wasnt enough of a workout for me.. so i grabbed my backpack and ran to the grocery.. i need lunch stuff anyways..
As usual i got carried away and ended up buying a ton of stuff.. filled my Army backpack that i highjacked from my old roommate to the brim.. lettuce, almond milk, canned pumpkin.. celery. Then ran home.. holy hell running with weight on your back is hard! hhahah but felt so so good!
I weighed my backpack when i got home.. about 24lbs.. not even that heavy!!

I am loving my new training today. and over the weekend.. i went for a run saturday morning, and to the gym for revolving stairs and xfit warm up sunday. love it.

Epic crossfit failure #1

today in crossfit we did, "Fight Gone Bad"

I dont have much time to give details, but, i hit myself in the face with a 10 lbs ball during wall ball.

most epic ball to face ever.

day 7,8,9

CrossFit #7=

Fight Gone Bad,

as previously mentioned I had my first epic failure this day. During wallball, I stopped paying attention and the ball hit me in the face. 10lbs of medicine ball to the face. It sucked. Hard. I tried to keep going, until I realized that the blood was flowing down my chin. Had to stop. Ended up staying after class and doing the set on my own. My instructor told me to slow it down and work on form and quality of movement. so instead of 3 rnds @ 5 min a rnd, i did 3 rnds 15 reps, continuous.

Wall Ball
KettleBell Deadlifts
Box Jumps (these make me so effing nervous)
Push Press
Row (to 15 calories/roughly 1 min)

CrossFit #8=

PNF Stretching lesson

We did our reg warm up, and then learned some ways to stretch. I was so down with this seeing as I have been having some issues with my shoulders. I made it my goal to do the splits, so I am going to work on that at night before bed.

CrossFit #9=

Turkeys GetUp 'n Snatch (i invented the name.. ha)

We performed reg warm up, then learned proper tech for the turkish get up, and the dumbbell snatch. TGU is not fun.. but at the same time is?? It is an awkward and difficult movement, but I could see it being something I really enjoy.
DB Snatch on the otherhand sucks.. maybe because it works legs and shoulders at the same time. who knows..

WOD:
15 Jump Squats
7/7 db Power Snatch (my mind was/is totally in the gutter when i look at that name)
1/1 TGU

5 rnds or 20 minutes. whichever comes first.

I completed 5 rnds in 12:34 (only second slowest in class!)


My comments to myself today were that I could have and should have gone harder and faster, but while I was doing it, I was really focused on perfecting the new movements I learned.. so this coming weekend I may redo this workout, just to see how fast I can get it. I feel I could get under 10 min..



I have also started running, I may have mentioned this.. I ran for 30 continuous (stopped 2 or 3 times to drink some water, but continued right away) minutes at the gym the other day.. felt great!! On days like yesterday where crossfit is just lesson, I run minimum 3kms when i get home.. doesnt take long, but gets the heart pumping..

well it is official. if i can hurt myself doing it during crossfit in some retarded way, i will.
i gave myself a blood blister this morning loading plates for deadlifts.

this resulted in a stream of cuss words that left my instructors mouth open. haha..
i apologized..

the last week has been good.
yesterdays WOD made me want to cry/vomit.

I am not too much in the mood to journal about the gym.. i have felt a little leaner the last couple days.. I have been trying to cut out processed foods as much as possible. and dairy. just to see how my body react.

i love quark. but since it is dairy. i cut it.
i love tea and coffee, but i love it with sweetener so i am TRYING to limit it (when i say limit, i mean i had 4 smalls yesterday, and was REALLY proud).. i would love to get to drinking it black.. but for now i do 1 cream, 1 sweetener.. although thats becoming a bit too sweet.. so i may try JUST cream.. then to milk.. then skim.. then black.. maybe..

i have also been trying to increase my healthy fat intake. for a while it was ultra low. like accidentals only.. but i am actively trying to increase my intake on healthy fats.
as well as fruit. i have issues with carbs.. in my head.. for the longest time i wouldnt eat fruit becasue of the carb content.. i am trying to have at least one serving of fruit per day. yesterday i ate half an apple.. this is huge for me. please dont judge. haha..

eating is really hard for me.. it terrifies me. and i just want to be healthy. i have decided that i do not want to compete because it is just so unhealthy.. or it can be.. (if you have competed and not done extremely scary dieting please PM me or respond.. my friend is competing.. and living on egg whites and baby food just doesnt seem... right...)

lately my meals have been

oatmeal&whey breakfast
tuna&piece of fruit snack
chicken salad
chicken and veggies
some form of protein & peanutbutter before bed

my cals are around 1600/day

i do crossfit mon-fri.. and i usually run or do some form of cardio afterwards..

totally unrelated to crossfit or my working out..

so I must preface this with, I have an irrational phobia of zombies.
yes.
as in fictional characters that eat brains. actually terrified. zombies and clowns. its terrible.

last night a friend posted on fb that everyone with H1N1 was gonna turn into a zombie.. that turned into the following conversation.

"ZombieTalk Between Girlfriends.."


Meagan: So I just txted Justin, "My friend marks fb status says "wouldnt it be strange if everyne w/h1n1 turned into zombies?" My irrational fear is in overdrive.."

besides the fact that i was painfully slow, I DID IT!!!!
I am proud of myself, and greatful that today was an easier workout.. lol

So today we went back to the begining. So to speak.
First, I am glad I post here, because I incorrectly recorded in my xfit log. well, incomplete.

On my first day of bootcamp I wrote,

35 squats (body weight)
350m Row
3rnds for Time (this means you do it 3 times, without stopping)

it took me 15 minutes 26 seconds
today, we did the same thing, 4 rnds for time.

FOUR ROUNDS FOR TIME TOOK ME.....

THIRTEEN MINUTES AND NINE SECONDS!!!!!!
I added a round and lost over 2 minutes! amazing. I am so proud.
Must go harder.

We learned about Cleans today.. I came home, had some breakfast, and then did the WOD off crossfit.com

I`m interested in crossfit too because I´m not any more going for the bulky look.
I´m more interested in health and a athletic physic.
I have begun martial arts so crossfit would be a great approach to train.
Is it possible to keep your muscular size with crossfit and to get better in sport specific
things like conditioning, health, coordination and so on when doing it only 2 or 3 times in the week?

Your thoughts were interesting to read.
thanks for the insight and opinions.
how much do you pay per month ? and how much people train in one session ?
big crossfit gym ?
would be cool to get some more opinions after a few weeks/months...

Reg Crossfit #1

So today I attended my very first real live crossfit (not bootcamp)
And it went good!!
I felt much weaker and poor formed than my classmates, but that will come with time. I just have to keep at it.

woke up, headed to xfit. did reg warm up.
DB Bear
6 dead lifts
6 hanging power cleans
6 thrusters

perform every minute, on the minute, for 20 minutes

this was hard. by the end my thrusters were sets of 5... done with 15 lbs weights. could have gone to 20 lbs for everything but thrusters..

came home, and enjoyed my carb day.. 3/4 cup oatmeal w blueberries.
1 scoop chocolate whey in 1 cup of water and 1 cup of almond milk.

freaking best braekfast.
