I'm guessing grinders are better than just generic coffee makers? If so, what's a cheap one that's decent? I see bulk coffee beans at the grocery store here so I can start with buying those. Or should I go with powder and not worry about a grinder? Help!!!!
And no, I'm not spending over 100 dollars on a damn coffee maker.

Yeah I would get a grinder and only buy your beans that are fresh roasted from a local roaster. They get stale setting there on the shelf and taste like crap. Start out with a pure region bean African beans are my favorite.
Its fine to go cheap on your coffee pot and grinder because the beans and how you grind them are the most important part. You can more then likely get a cheap grinder and coffee pot from walmart for 50 bucks or less to start out with.

What do you think about buying the powder? Does it lose a lot of the taste if it's already been put through the grinder and bagged? Would I (a coffee snob virgin) really notice a difference?

Yeah you can notice a huge difference, the powders go stale quickly and lose their flavor fast. If you buy fresh roasted beans from a local roaster or off the internet you can really tell a difference. I normally do not buy whole beans from grocery stores either because they have often been sitting there for way to long and also go bad.
people would be surprised how many different flavors that coffee can have depending on how fresh it is, how it was roasted and from what region it came from.

I would not go out and spend a ton of money on it right off the get go. I would ease into if I were unsure just how much I liked coffee. Stop in a local roaster one day(not burnt beans Starbucks) and trying some of their coffees. Most will have some fresh brewed dark roast/light roast/medium roast that you can try a shot of for free. Ask them if the brew is a regional bean or a blend and if its a dark roast or light roast. Also ask how often they roast their beans, some roast daily some weekly and some even less remember the fresher the roast the better the flavor.

1) I guess someone chasing that perfect cup of coffee.
2) About 3 years ago I was at a coffee shop and they had some yirgacheffe that I tried that blew my mind. I had no idea coffee could be that good or have that much flavor.
3) Some days perhaps only 2-3 cups and some days I might drink 10-12
4) lol it tends to.

That makes some damn fine coffee for sure. I was just saying that a drip is fine for most people starting out just because it is easy, simple, common and convenient to use.

I have actually been thinking about picking up my own roaster but I am undecided if I want to take it that far yet. I have been looking at this roaster for personal use.

I don't like black coffee though. I usually throw 2 packets of splenda in mine. Doesn't that just ruin it? So if I try some local coffee shop (there are a few here) and put splenda in there, did I just sin? Would I notice the difference versus Starbucks? (can't stand starbucks by the way....nasty coffee)

If they roast there beans good then you will notice a difference for sure. Again I hate the way starbucks roast their beans. Drop the sugar and try some of their creamer instead.
