Gaaaahhh I have a feeling Im gonna miss another season (2010) of Rugby :/
I spent most of 2009 dropping bodyfat (successfully) but I lost a tiny bit of muscle mass, and a little bit of strength in the process. My off-season program has already reached the stage where Im focusing more on conditioning, and Iv only put on like 2 kg's over the past 7 weeks :/ Im about 8 weeks out from Pre-season, Im gonna step up the cals but I have a feeling Im just not going to be at a level where I will be able to play to my potential

i take it you aint playing front row anymore. at you wieght 75kgish? you must be one of the smaller guys on the field. congrats on the wieght loss but surely you need to think about what you are doing, if all your gym work diet etc is effecting your rugby then why are you doing it if it is not for the purpose of rugby.......you have plenty time around 3months till the season starts?? ive seen guys pack on a solid good 5-7kg of muscle over the preseason so it is doable.

I chose to lose the weight for a) personal reasons (sick of being the fat dude :P ) and b) because I wanted to play a more hooker/backrow focused game instead of being a prop.
Im sitting on about 70kg's at the moment, my job is very, very active which is making packing on size quickly fairly hard, to say the least. Im getting there, but it turns out I didn't really leave myself enough time.
Im keeping at it though, fingers crossed. I still have time like you said, not throwing in the towel yet. If my ball skills were better I could try and crack it in the centres just so I can play this coming year, but unfortunately my passing/kicking is a bit dodgy after years in the forwards
Honestly though, if it comes to it, I would rather take another season off and ensure that I am operating at 110% of my best (physically) for a comeback the next season, if I have to make that decision. Rocking up to trials to get told Im too small for the forwards will not go down easily (considering in high school I played front row and was one of the strongest guys in my year)

prop to centre??? interesting postion switch. honistly i think you are focusing on your physical preparation to much. taking two years out and not playing will be tough and then coming back into a new postion will be hard. i mean i stepped up a level for my last few games and i found the difference between losey and tighthead huge and thats just the other side of the scrum.
even if it means playing a lower level for a year surely thats better than a year out. after all imo i think playing experience is the best experience and i'm pretty sure it is skill level and speed of thought/play that makes the difference between the really good players and the avergae players. everyone can be a gym rat
again congrats on getting out of the prop postion and your height and wieght for a hooker isnt that bad, not heavy but if you have the speed(i'm guessing you do if you could play centre) and fitness to get around the park and have good arrows you should be fine at hooker. our hooker on sat was probably the smallest forward on the pitch on sat just because he's thiner than i am and he dominated the contact so size aint everything.
bit of a jumbled rant, i just hate the way how rugby can just be about size sometimes and not about ability and skill and how that makes so many people focused with the gym instead of rugby.

well there's one season down the drain. no wins what so ever. a couple of close calls, but ultimately fruitless. So we'll drop down to Division 3. D3 is a joke. It'll be a cake walk, then we'll be back in D2. The question is can we stay in D2? Too many old boys on our team. Too many guys moving away. We're supposed to be getting some younger guys next year but who can be sure. Now that we're D3, they might go over to some D2 teams instead. It's just hard, considering if we had done well this year it would have been my breakout season. I played well, made every tackle, made it to every break down, stole the ball like crazy (something i'd never figured out how to do before). Ah well, I guess i'll be a superstar in D3 for 1 year then try to keep this team in D2 after that.

thats weird. usually you have to make it into the regionals and that gets you up a division.

hey everyone, been around this forum for a while and decided to actually join. been playing rugby for 2 years now and enjoy it far more than any other sports I've played.
this questions goes mainly to the outside backs where speed is important, but how have you guys gone about putting on weight and strength, while staying fast and agile?

might want to check the supplement science section for it. i've heard about it, it sounds pretty good, but looks expensive. i just stick to getting EAA's (essential amino acids) after workouts.

I dont have any problems with gaining weight and my speed. As long as you do leg work and gain muscle not fat you will find your pace doesnt really get effected. I have got quicker after starting to do squats and gained some weight.
Also if you gain weight make sure you do sprint training or do rugby training with sprints in it due to i beleive this prepars the new leg muscles you gain to being explosive. This is just my personal view.

I'm a utility so I guess I could help you. Squatting and Deadliftings are IMO must haves for leg power and adding things like the Overhead Squat and Lunge i think helped my speed all the explosive things like the Cleans and Snatches are good too.
Agility wise my house has lots of differeant rooms so going from one to another i just normally pretend to step the corners/imaginary players and at school just playing touch football or other things with mates helps with overall fitness and agility. Nothing like showing off to get you trying harder.

Rough day yesterday. Had a friendly against a team one division above us. First half went great. Our forwards were definitely outplaying theirs(bigger, stronger tight five and a more aggressive back row). Our backs, not so much...all either new or slow. We were up at the half and then the issue of fitness reared its ugly head. Too many new guys and not near enough time at practice. Not too worried though, we've got the athletes, and the cup matches don't start until January.
How was everyone else's weekend?

sucked... bad. got beat 25-24 yesterday to a team we should have ran over. but for some reason backs forgot how to catch a kick, forwards forgot plays, and nobody could really tackle well.
granted there was a few of us that played our asses off (3 steal and my first try this season for starts) but we just effed up too many times.
back feels like hell, cant move my neck, rolled both ankles, and i think i refractured my middle finger. guess im back to functional lifting for the next few weeks again. dammit was really hoping to get back into squatting

We beat BG 43-19 lastnight, good thing too because if we lost we'd have to go to Minnesota next weekend.

mixed weekend, turned up to game with 15 (let down by clubmates even though I managed to work a 12.5 hr night and play) then lock got his head rucked and had to go for stitches @hospital after about 3mins. Then tighthead dislocated shoulder after 50mins, had to swap sides in scrum (hate playing tight) however 6 man scrummage dominated 8 man, and scramble D meant no points scored against in second half. Only lost by 8pts...
Am however suffering from severe pain in left achilles and weird numbness in parts of left arm.

hey this is my first post in this thread i just want to say whats up to everyone here. i play prop (truly i am a tugby whore and will play anywhere but we have no experienced fowards atm). we have a club side, if you can really call it that, and we have played some us college teams before so if any of you guys want to come down on say spring break and plan to play a couple of games i am sure we could arrange something like showing you guys around. also, has anyone tried strongman style training to the workouts? if so, how has it turned out?
I cant wait till Invictus comes out!!!

numbness id get that looked at.
i feel your pain on swaping sides on the scrum i was almost swaped to tighthead on sat but i figured that keeping a proper tighthead on no matter how tired he looked would be better than a fresh losehead playing the wrong side. i only got 10mins eitherside of half time on sat but i'm pretty happy with that as i knew thats what was going to happen and i'm still adjusting to the higher standard of game. we beat dundee 24-15.

i sorta do both, i start of doing mill press but as the wieght gets heavier i change into push press.
i think mill press is better and thats why i also try to keep strict form but most people coaches i know will allways tell me to use more of a push press style as its slightly better suited for rugby.
