I wanna compete at something...but what???
Hey guys...I'm 37 and looking for some added motivation to get into the best shape of my life.
What type of physique contests/challenges are available for middle-aged guys who want to compete at SOMETHING, but don't want to do a bodybuilding competition, powerlifting, marathon...lol...etc.???
Any "challenges" happening on this site right now I'm not aware of??
Thanks!

Ever throw stuff? It's a heck of a lot of fun...and you sometimes get free beer.

Seriously though, I'd give thought to a PL meet. Things like Highland Games and strongman require a certain strength level just to be able to complete the events. I don't know what kind of weights you can move so I can't say where you could start. At a PL meet you can start anywhere, and go as high as you can. Most people are familliar with the lifts and can learn the rules of competitive lifts fairly easily. You don't need any equipment to get started except for a singlet which are easy to find and cheap. You will also meet a ton of nice supportive people and it might lead you to other avenues like the ones I mentioned above. Anyway you go, good luck, and I hope it goes well.

Awesome!!! Well then come back to the dark side....Hey, in a few years you'll be 40 and you can throw the 42 instead of that 56. It's so much easier on the shoulders.

Definitely sounds tempting! I tore my ACL about three years ago throwing the heavy hammer in the mud and I just had a second surgery on the same knee to scrape out some torn miniscus and bone chips.
Maybe when some time has passed and I'm feeling invincible again...lol...I'll get back to my roots!

a 5K is 3.1 miles. Very easy to train for.

Oh ya, lots of games in Tx. Some good throwers down there. Mike Baab, and the Sorins are all down there. Some great people, very active group.

I think above all you should set your own personal fitness goal to achieve. When I used to help out clients for bodybuilding or fitness competitions I always told them to do it for themselves FIRST. If they place high then that is icing on the cake but they themselves had to achive their own goals on what they wanted to look like BEFORE they stepped on stage. They had to put the effort and dedication into the process and have a vision of what they wanted to look like. If they could accomplish that task then they WON!
You could never predict who else would show up on the day of the show and there are always people better than ourselves out there so if they won then turn to them and congratulate them because they too achieved their goals. If you're happy with the effort you made and the way you look then what more can you do? You don't cry because someone beat you... if they did, they most likely were better than you (don't let this get into a crooked judge thread...).
Anyways.... give yourself some short term and long term goals to achieve and start working towards them.

Strongman is a fun hobby even if you don't compete. It's fun to make/acquire equipment and it breaks up the monotony of training inside.

So what the hell is wrong with A Bodybuilding Competition, you don't have to worry about tearing apart your body and you don't have to wear a skirt !
