This is my opinion, and is what I've been doing so far.

Pre-Workout:
I do one of two things about an hour before my workout begins; I drink a 25-30 gram Whey protein shake or I eat a 4 egg white + 1 whole egg omelet.

Post Workout:
I have a 40-50 gram Whey protein shake at the gym, then I go home and eat a piece of fruit like a banana or handful of grapes or blueberries with a spoonfull of natural peanut butter.

*Remeber, and this is also from personal experience and my preference, it really isn't a good idea to weight train on a fast (meaning no pre-workout food/fuel); however, a lot of people choose to train cardio fasted.

*I choose to concentrate on recovery rather than pre-workout supplementation. No matter what I always make sure I eat something or have a big thick whey protein shake after my workout no matter whether it's cardio, weight training, or both.

Good Whey proteins:

-Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey (best bang for the buck in my humble opinion)
-Inner Armor Whey
-BSN Syntha-6...is your one stop 6 different protein matrix for AM-PM fueling
-Gaspari MyoFusion

you want both.
u want slow digesting macros b4 the gym and fast after

for pre workout you want slow digesting.. so add some fats into your protein shake if that is what u are consuming b4 the gym? (peanut butter, omega oils etc) or a meal with slow digesting carbs, protein, good fat. u can eat this about hr or so b4

PWO is VERY imp, prob the most imp intake of the day. u want to feed those muscle fast and promote growth. so u want a quick carb. this can be in the form of dextrose powder, sweet-tart candies (main ingredient dex) fruit, white breads, bagel, etc. and u also want a fast protein like whey, some egg whites. what i like to do is bring my PWO shake w me, drink it on the way home, and eat about an hr later-a good normal complete meal-
pwo shake would be whey IN WATER NO MILK- NO FATS-slows digestion- and dextrose or fruit juice.

what do you do if you w/o quite close to waking in the am? I sometimes have my coffee and jump right in and other times I eat a banana and a string cheese. But I don't have much time to waste and need to get started ASAP in the morn. is it even worth eating something if I'm hitting the weights 10 min after I get up?
would a 1/2 serving of protein w/ milk before be ok? of course no milk after tho!

better than nothing. you shouldnt really do weights in such a fasted state, kinda defeats the purpose. trying to grow muscle, and you are starving it and pushing your body to expend more energy.. if your body doesnt have food for fuel it goes for the muscle first usually.
protein, mik, banana is better than nothing for sure
