"Newbie" knowledge......
Aside from Newbie gains another phenomenon i have noticed is "Newbie Knowledge"
You know...the guy who has been lifting for 6 months, reads FLEX magazine, hits the boards, and now he is an expert trainer who won't hesitate to tell you what you are doing wrong. Completely ignoring the fact that you carry 50 more pounds of muscle than he does.
I had one of these guys critique my form on BB curls yesterday, it was all I could do to not laugh in the guy's face.

Go to the exercise forum and see the 150 pounder ripping a Ronnie Coleman vid where he is doing partials.

To be honest, IME it isn't the guys who read FLEX that are the problem, it's the guys who have taken 1 physiology class who are now bodybuilding experts that give the worst advice.
This site is rife with them.
Often, the "FLEX" types often will do more than they should, but their hearts are in the right place.
The "I know more than bodybuilders because I'm the ONLY one who ever thought of applying physiology to bodybuilding" are the most annoying.*
*sadly, I used to be one of them

I don't think anyone should take a lot of liberty and correct other people in the gym unless they are in danger of hurting themselves.
I think at some point we have all seen someone doing something incorrectly. I see guys twice my size doing exercises with form that is wrong and makes no sense to me. I know it's wrong, I can see it. What they do is none of my business really. I do not feel the need to tell them, I just wonder if they realize it or care.

Dude your biceps are bigger than most people's quads! If you were working out at my gym the only reason to talk to you would to ask how in the hell you got such big arms. If I saw you doing BB curls I would watch closely and do them exactly they way you did them. The proof is in the result. You're too nice, if I were you, I would have laughed in his face.

Should have asked for a demonstration of proper form - with the weight you were curling.

That is really strange. You have to wonder what is going through some people's heads sometimes.

Today I saw a couple of guys who are usually a threesome, the three have pretty terrible form on almost everything. One of them does pushups and looks like a hammock. The two of them today were doing barbell shoulder presses, they were more like front lateral raises, I was very tempted to tell them "put your head in the hole", but they were in no danger of injuring themselves, and they work hard and regularly even if they work sloppily, so I minded my own business.
I figure that if someone is doing an exercise with what I consider bad form, but he's lifting more than me, well... if it's stupid and it works it ain't stupid! But they were smaller and lifting less than me. Still, I minded my own business.
Now, the guy I did talk to today, it was not about form. I was on the squat rack, and he on the Smith machine. He came up and took the 2.5kg plates from my rack and over to his Smith machine while I was doing a set. I was annoyed, because I was about to use them in the next set. So after I finished I went over and looked at the racks - he had a heap of different plates scattered around, and what do you know, there were two 2.5kg plates waiting under some other plates to be used. It's just that he hadn't noticed them, because his area was such a mess, and mine was nice and neat.
"You know," I said taking them, "before you grab plates off someone else, you should probably have a look to see if you've already got them yourself."
I think anyone can advise anyone on gymequette
