Health insurance cost outrageous through my employer!
I do not understand how I can be paying $530 per month for family coverage in addition to the $700 my employer is paying. Is this typical? Family insurance for $1230 a month? I thought when you have it through your employer it is supposed to be better since more people are on the plan. Two years ago I was paying $400 per month on my own to Blue Cross for family insurance and that was the total cost per month. Unfortuantely since my wife has Guillain-Barre I cannot go out on my own now.

I pay 1275 a month...next year I expect it to be $2000 a month...I pay the entire premium
I am so ****ing pissed that we don't have a public option
Can't change insurance because of prexisting conditions in my family
Fully expect to cancel the policy in a couple of years, and gamble. I fully expect it to be $3,000 a month in another 3 years when I and my wife are both 50.

Yes, that is more than plausible.
In case you have another motive for post....nobody (that I know of) dismisses the need for reform. It is only the way in which reform comes that is debated.

Whatever the numbers - I think tax funded healthcare is the way to go. In the main the NHS in the UK provides an amazing service. I have Private cover through work for free, which enables me to skip the queue for non-essential stuff. But in an emergency the NHS deals with you straight away. If I was in the US thats what I would be lobbying for. I do feel sorry for you guys on that one.

Thanks DBX and namtrag. I just wanted to make sure it was on the level. It just seemed odd that I was paying a tad less than $400 on my own 2 years ago and now it is 3 x as much for the family. I guess I should be thankful the company pays $700.

It's all relevant to the company you might work for. When an airline employee, I paid $160 per month (that's right, Mike) for a family of 5. Now, we pay approx $400 per month, which is the low end. Insurance is largely based on where you live.........

That and stop paying for free health care for all the illegals!
To the OP, it's tough to say not knowing the specifics of your policy. I pay for all of my health care and for all of my employees health care. It costs me a fortune and I'm pi$$ed everyday that we are not doing something serious to lower health insurance costs, like cutting out the overhead (paperwork) for the doc's, tort reform, and expelling the illegals!
You do realize that BHO's plan doesn't really kick in until 2016, and that it will be funded in the front end by taxes. So, if you think about it, for 7 years you'll basically get to pay for your health insurance TWICE! Brillant plan! NOT!

I am really not up on the Health Care reform to be honest. I know I should be.I am thankful to have insurance especially since my wife needs allot of care. I do know that this country pays /has paid millions towards the health care for individuals who should not receive any benefits.

That's more than plausible. Used to be GM of a small company, and the cost 4+ years ago was $1200. We split it with employees 80/10 at that time. In WI. if a small company has a few women in child bearing years (18-40) the premiums go way up, or with bad experience.

I own my own company and we used to provide 50% of it. Yes, family cost over $1200 per year. I had to quit paying it, literally could not afford it. I am BCBS Individual family for $379 a month. Two of my employees could not qualify, one is obese (300 lb plus) and the other takes oxies or some other high potent pain killer. I am not the only small business that had to make this very hard decision. My Individual plan does not cover everything the old plan did but it is good enough for now.

I am technically self employed...my firm has a group policy.
I and one partner have family coverage. The third partner is single, and we cover a single employee.
Our premiums are $3400 a month. Mine are 1275, my partner with family is 1180, the single partner is older and his are $650, and the young guy's are the remainder.
We can't shop it because of my son's issues...we are waiting for the renewal notice in a couple of months, crossing fingers that they don't cancel us.
Believe me we are probably a typical small business, and we are dangling.

Everything else aside (including sympathy), you have not previously mentioned this very important aspect when decrying the outrageous cost of health care. And you've railed against the cost of heath care many time here in different posts and threads. I'm telling you right now...that's disingenuous as all get out, Mike. After reading for more than a year how outrageous your costs are......I finally get some perspective.

my premiums were this high before a single claim was filed for my son...he had no problems until this year, after the premiums were already sky high. We have had very little claims history of any kind up until this year.
I know the premiums will go up and that's fair...but they were already high...
I don't expect you to apologize, but think before insulting me.
edited to add: did want to also say, we paid out the ass for my son on top of the insurance, $3,000 copay as I recall...they also kicked him out of the psych center after 5 days because the insurance company said that was all they would cover. Didn't matter if he needed more care or not...the insurance companies decide these things, not the doctors.

It's as fair as anything else. You know gd well I would have framed my outrage with some perspective. You have mentioned no less than half a dozen times that your insurance costs were high as hell....all without EVER mentioning in the same passages that it was due to being a partner.
Apology accepted... and back at ya...

Come on you guys, posts like that are beneath you. You both have built way too much credibility and respect among the rest of us to mar it with that. InB4 Arlecchino posts a comment about the teen misc.
Besides, we all probably agree that the cost of health insurance sucks, period.

my apologies to Kevin, I have edited out the uncalled for name calling...
....I have no right to complain yet....it just touched a nerve...
when the insurance company says they won't renew, yeah, then I can complain...hasn't happened yet.
Also, my partners have already warned me I will be invited to not be in the group if the rates go up too much, at which time, my family will be uninsured.
No biggie, I can get a second job at Starbucks...lol

Besides, we all probably agree that the cost of health insurance sucks, period.

This issue brings out the worst in people...including me.

I can tell you that $20,000 bucks a year doesn't go out for it. I couldn't afford that kind of coin.
Also when my Mom got cancer (three times now) she had insurance (it wasn't taken away from her) and her rates didn't go up.
I agree with you about the lawyers. You guys seem to sue each other down there for sneezing to loud.

Well, you can always go get a job at a hospital. My insurance is FREE to me. My employer pays 730 per month. Our co payments are low and I do get to select my own doctors from their 'list'.
