When they get out of the army their rifles are converted to semi-auto.

When their period of service has ended, militiamen have the choice of keeping their personal weapon and other selected items of their equipment. In this case of retention, the rifle is sent to the weapons factory where the fully automatic function is removed; the rifle is then returned to the discharged owner. The rifle is then a semi-automatic or self-loading rifle.

All guns are NOT illegal. I am a registered and certified firearms owner living in England.

I find that repulsive.
Forcing anyone to do anything against there will, especially on the federal level is totalitarianism.

Switzerland recently passed a law requiring all militia owned ammunition to be turned in due to the flat out gun ban being narrowly defeated recently.
so maybe Switzerland isn't quite the answer

I read Switzerland has the highest concentration of gun ranges and shooting was the national sport but I have not verified this.
Note that Switzerland does not have a standing army which has pros and cons but simply it places the burden of defense on everyone the people don't have the attitude the left wing has in this country that assumes they don't need guns... and avoid the issue that others do and will protect them even if they won't help protect those gun owners back.
Aside from blocking all the roads into the country... this armed populace is probably the biggest reason why this was the only country in Europe not subjugated by the Nazi's... every house was a sniper's nest and well stocked so to defeat Switzerland the Nazi's would have had to kill most everyone in the country as opposed to just defeating a smaller standing army. Hitler paraded right down the middle of Paris in the open and nobody took a shot at him.
I'd rather deal with the problems of having too much freedom than not enough... or none.

We should all take a lesson on this in the U.S while we still can. Once gun laws are in place, there is no way we will ever overturn them. People think another Hitler or Stalin isn't possible, however they forget these atrocities didn't happen to long ago.
It's the only element stopping the government from total power over it's people.

No four words in all human history has lead to the death of more people then "it can't happen here"

If they could role over the the major military powers as they did, a bunch of armed Swiss sure has hell didn't scare them off. The reason Hitler didn't go after them and allowed them that silly "neutral" crap was financial in nature and due to the fact even after you take over the word as was planned, you still need a stable banking system. Where do you think Hitler kept much of his gold? I'm 100% for a rifle in every house, and dying free is better then living in a slave camp, but the Swiss system of the citizen soldier would have been a speed bump for the German military.
BTW, I believe history books suggest Hitler was planning to go after the Swiss after Russia fell, which didn't happen...

Dude, if baseless assumptions designed to support a position were not used, it wouldn't be BB.com! :-)
