this is my opinion:
i recommend to NOT subscribe to it now as a poolee. wait till you are at your first duty station. you can either buy it off the stands at the PX or you can subscribe. you'll have no idea to what any of the stuff in there is or what it means if you get it now.
if you are like some of the guys in here who has been out for quiet a while, it's a good way to keep up with things.

I use to just buy it on base, I would not do it until you are at you're first duty station.

Same as above. Get it once you hit the Fleet. I still get it now 5 years later.

I would buy the MC Times every once in a while, usually when it was a big story. Decent stuff usually.

For all the new guys, a HUGE heads-up: The job of the Marine Corps Times newspaper is to... Sell more Marine Corps Times newspapers. The pure "news" aspect is usually accurate, but many of their opinions, projection, and certainly headlines are just there to grab your attention. NEVER take something in there as pure, 100% correct Gospel Truth.

I think I may have bought 1 or 2 in my 4 years. I prefer watching TV to get my news and I never cared much about Marine Corps news.

DI's made us buy the Wednesday issue and do a summary on any article that was due before Church on Sunday. I think that was a SDI deal, because the only other person I met that had to do the same thing had the same SDI as me.
Otherwise, I only read whatever copies were left in the Chow hall

you're lucky! infantry doesn't open up for me til the summer, which will go past my 365 days of DEP time. I'm going to go in with Avionics though, did some research and I ended up liking it a lot. Problem is, I'm 3 points short on the mechanical section of the ASVAB and I need a waiver !!!!!

Well yes, of course, but it's misleading to tell people in order to be a Marine they have to run an 18 minute 3 mile and be able to do 20 pull ups... There are great Marines out there who are just average at PT, or are strong runners but have little strength.

No it's to aim for the best. You can change your body through PT. I have seen it happen. If the mind says, the body will follow.

You need to speak to an active duty recruiter about the specific details. I believe you need a temp visa to actually enlist and sign the papers

Check out http://www.leatherneck.com/forums/ There are a few recruiters there, Also have seen lots of people from different countries ask about joining.
EDIT:make sure you use the search engine there... They will chew you out for not doing so.

Serious question
This question certainly isn't intended to be service bashing, so please don't take it that way. I am active Army for over 15 years now. One thing that has always bothered me and I have seen terrible outcomes on two seperate occasions is:
Why does the USMC insist on clearing IED's, UXO or mines dismounted?
You guys are some crazy mofo's and have been there when we needed help, but this tactic seems very flawed to me. I have even asked a couple Gunny's about it, and they reasoned that most of the time it can be spotted/disabled prior to detonation. Unfortantely, I have also seen some fallen heroes from this technique. Any insight?
p.s. If you feel a discussion on this TTP is inappropriate feel free to delete, but from what I have seen it is common knowledge readily accessable via interwebz.

I enlisted with a green card (permanent legal resident). If you only have a temp visa then it needs to be valid till after you are done with your active duty (4+ years) can't just have a 1 year visa.

It depends on where it is, if it can be cleared while mounted via a wire shot from a armored vehicle and if you have the proper tools to clear it in that manner. Sometimes you have to make use with just bubble gum and tape.

from a corpsman standpoint. ABSOLUTELY NOT.
we have EOD teams for that reason to disarm explosives, uxos, mines. this was a major complaint when i was in country as well that we got briefed on about ten times while in kuwait. Marines and some army guys thinking they could just shoot the wire on an ied on the side of the road only to find out that was a decoy and they were sitting in the blast zone for the main charge or just accidently setting it off and getting someone killed.
that or they were sending unskilled guys to try to disarm an ied.

I'm aware we have teams. Sometimes you don't. Then you have to go with whatever tools you have at the moment such as Marines with basic training.
Yes in the end the grunts pay the price
