Question about post workout nutrition and meal timing

Is it really necessary to have an entire meal one hour after having a post-workout shake? Wouldn't so many calories in such a short period of time (from both the shake and the meal) be excess calories and stored as fat?

No and no. But your questions is like asking how long is that string. It lacks context and hasn't been placed into full perspective.

Your post workout shake will start rebuilding the muscles immediately. The carbs from the shake will replenish muscle glycogen stores and the protein will start the rebuilding process. The meal that you have afterwards doesn't have to be a large meal. Usually you will go to sleep a few hours after anyway so you don't need a large meal. Lee Haney said it best. Eat for what you are about to do... Let me know if this helps.

At least OP is on the right path by questioning the common myth that the BEST post-workout nutrition is ALWAYS an immediate shake and then a whole food meal an hour later.

I have post workout shake immediately after training, then get my arse on the train home and usually don't eat for at least 90mins post training........

I am actually starving again before I get to eat that meal...............
