Reps to whoever can figure this out
Mary works at a bakery that sells two layered cakes for $15.75 each and three layered cakes for $20.75. Today she sold 45 cakes for a total of $803.75. How many of each type of cake did she sell?

45 = x + y
803.75 = 15.75*x + 20.75*y
substitute and solve... x is number of 2-layered cakes, y is number of 3-layered cakes

15.75 x 26 = 409.50
20.75 x 19 = 394.25
409.50+394.25 = 803.75

i dunno about equation but what i did was basically estimate..
started at 20 (2 layers) - 25 (3 layers) = total price too big
tried 25 (2 layers) - 20 (3 layers) = close but not there yet
tried 26 (2 layers) - 19 (3 layers) = correct answer

you change the
45=x+y into y=45-x
then you substitute it into the main formula which is 803.75=15.75x+20.75y
this will give you the following:
803.75= 15.75x+20.75(45-x)
then just solve for x, which is by doing the following:
803.75=15.75x+20.75*45-20.75x
then,
803.75=-5x+933.75
then (just rearrange the numbers),
933.75-803.75=5x
this will give you 130=5x
x=130/5= 26
now you have x, so just solve for y by substituting x=26 into the formula y=45-x
so y=45-26, which means y= 19
since x is the 2-layer cakes, mary have sold 26 2-layer cakes
and since y represents the 3-layer cakes, mary have sold 19 3-layer cakes.

The formula for proving has been posted. Easiest way to actually discover the total was to split the # of cakes sold, do your math, and set a starting point. I started at 25 2-layer and 20 3-layer.
25*15.75 = 393.75
20*20.75 = 415.00
808.75
Based on the total value, $803.75, I'm 5 dollars high - add 1ea. 2-layer, deduct 1ea. 3-layer, gives me your total.

x + y = 45

x = 45 - y
15.75(45 - y) + 20.75y = 803.75
708.75 - 15.75y + 20.75y = 803.75
708.75 + 5y = 803.75
5y = 95
y = 19
Edit: ffuuuuuu work windows calculator so slow
