Lot of "if you don't want to be stared at stop being attractive/stop going outside/stop being a girl" nonsense in this thread, too. It really makes me wonder about men.
Next time I work out, I'll make sure to wear a bhurka so people don't take liberties with me.
Just because a girl is being cute does not mean she deserves to be treated like a piece of meat. The two are not inclusive.
But people look and that's fine. What I think the OP is talking about is the guys who make a point at making girls feel uncomfortable, not the innocent glancers.

Well, what's the line between ok glancing and creepy staring?
My bet is that it's what the guy looks like. LOL.

Nah, it's the difference from appreciation and continuing to do it until the chick leaves.
And the guys who are creeps about it often do it even if the girl isn't dressed "sexy".
Cause there's a lot of creeps out there and the reality is they're always watching for their next "meal".
And I'm a really small girl so the creeps that are around always see me as a nice and easy target.
But besides the reality of not living in a perfect world. Not every chick enjoys being looked at like a piece of meat. ..I still have a little bit of a conscience/soul left and it gives me an icky feeling.
But you know w/e go ahead and scoff at any of our concerns.

I hope this doesn't come across as rude or dismissive but is it not possible that maybe you're assumptions are maybe a little harsh? I doubt too many men that look at women see them purely as a piece of meat or their next meal. Maybe some do, actually i'm sure some do, but i would say they're a minority.
Anyway, I too will stop looking at women at the gym after reading some of these posts (i don;t want to creep people out!) but i feel sad that we're getting to a point where it is wrong to even look at each other.

I find it so funny how people make such a big deal about this. People will stare while you're walking down the street, while you're in a club, while your standing in line at the grocery store, filling up at the gas station, etc...
These staring at the gym threads bore me to death...there's only a million of them that have posted...
I will say it again...if a person is taking time to notice all these supposed stares...then you are NOT training hard enough...not even close...

^^^^^ x1000! Stop being so self-conscious and paranoid. Unless someone starts harassing you there's no need to think the worse. Odds are the guy isn't even thinking what you think he is thinking. Focus on your workouts.

I find it flattering if a guy looks at me. I assume it means he either finds me attractive or is impressed by how much weight I'm lifting. However, he could just be wondering when I'm done with the rack...

I think that this is the #1 answer, if anyone ever got the impression that I was staring at them (male of female), I would first hope that they consider that I might be waiting to use the piece of equipment that they are currently taking forever on!

Yes, But what can you really do about it? Guys think with their downstairs and it's natural... unfortunately.

Funny as it sounds, I've never had an issue with guys at the gym...I get more stares and looks from women. I try not to let it bother me. Most of the time I feel like I get looks of admiration. I work hard at the gym, and people notice when someone is training intensly. I take it as a compliment.

When I am working out, I put my earphones on and go into "my own world". I never notice anything or anyone, just mind my own business. If they want to stare, let them stare...

It doesn't really bother me; half the time I'm in my own little world haha. But I do catch myself staring at girls/guys the odd time. Mostly to see what they're doing. Sometimes you get those creeps who constantly stare..usually just shrug it off and go back to my own thing. If i notice someone starting at me i just smile at them and they usually stop lol.

Guys or anyone who stares at the gym is no big deal to me, does not bug me. What does bug me is at the gym I go to they had all the machines faceing the same direction, now they have them facing each other. So now when I do leg extensions im about four feet away face to face from the person doing shoulder press. It just makes resting between sets kind of awkward.

The machines in my gym have always all faced each other, the worst combination is the leg press and one of the arm exercises were you push the bars forward (can't name it as I have never used it), but have had people move to dodge the arm machine when I have been on the leg press and I have nearly hit them on the upswing, really annoying when you have to pause while doing reps because people don't think! Espically because if they walked straight down the middle there is a 'safe' zone were you won't get wacked by either machine.

I weight train at home and use the treadmill in a very small gym that we have at our apartment complex so I never have this problem. However occasionally there will be someone else in the gym that talks to me even though I have headphones in my ears, and I am clearly running at a pace that doesn't allow me to carry on a conversation. But I think if I was working out at a gym and a guy was repeatedly staring at me, I'd feel a little uncomfortable but that's just me.

Don't care for the starers, really.

The gym just ain't the place. I don't stare at anyone. I don't look and I'm 100% focused on what I'm doing. If I do take a peak, it is because whoever I'm looking at is off the charts! Otherwise, I would not give you the time of day in the gym unless it was something workout related - i.e., a spot, training or diet talk etc.
I just assume that women (at least those I would be interested in) are not going to the gym looking for guys and are just as focused in there as I am. If they are not, it's unlikely that I'm all that impressed..

I agree with Kimm4. I'm in another world when I'm at the gym. I don't notice anything around me because I'm focused on what I'm doing. As far as I'm concerned, I'm the only one there! The ONLY time I ever notice what's going on around me at the gym is on those really 'off' days where my concentration just isn't there.
Besides, we all love to people watch including attractive, average and unattractive people. I think it's human nature. And men are especially very visual creatures.
Be thankful you have admirers because when you're 70, you'll wish you still had them. hehehe!

This question is a bit off topic. Is there any way a woman would be offended by a random compliment between sets--" you look great" or "your arms are coming along" or something? As long as the guy isn't leering or in some way inappropriate? I've had women appear offended at comments like that; while others have been very appreciative of the compliment. If someone said the same thing to me, I'd be flattered, and would say thank you, and mean it. I'm hard pressed to figure out why someone would be offended, or too into themselves to respond to a compliment made to them between sets when they were just resting anyhow.

I'm guilty of this and for that I apologize. I'm the creep that takes a long drink at the water cooler with my neck craned to a weird angle watching the hot girls in the aerobics studio. I'm also the creep that stares at hot women at the gym in skimpy clothes until they feel uncomfortable. I just can't help myself.
I am MAN.

well, if a woman is wearing skimpy clothing... what does she HONESTLY expect... I mean, let's be real... she's wearing them cause she wants to show off what she's got.. and not for herself. And it's not wrong to be proud of the hard work, but don't get all bent out shape cause people are looking/staring.. it's to expected.
Staring though, is annoying. I mean, come on... who really likes to be stared at? It's weird.. especially when you are trying to do something like workout... I don't want someone analyzing all that I do.

yea especially when these girls wear their skimpy clothes when its like 50 degrees outside, you know they want attention.
Who likes being stared at ? I love being stared at by women. When homos stare at me on the other hand, that is definitely weird and discomforting.

Many of you are a bit anti-social, don't you think? I think it's akward to completely ignore everyone around you in the gym so when I rest between sets, I do look around but I never STARE. There's nothing wrong with looking around and if a guy looks at you for a second it doesn't neccesarely mean he's checking you out.

if you don't want to be stared at then don't wear those tight ass spandex pants on the treadmill for god sakes....the only person i look at is my self when working out. but if i see a girl with tight pants / fat ass my eyes just clings to it

wow. So now I'm being told what I can do with my own eyes. how much does it cost to look in your direction nowadays?
Really though, I can understand how EXCESSIVE staring can be discomforting, but there is no reason you should be bothered by glances, or perhaps slightly more than a glance. Alot of people are saying "i might not even be looking at you, but rather your technique or equipment" but I'm gonna be honest. Most of the time I AM looking at you, but I don't do those stalker stares...It's usually only a sec. So what, I can't look at attractive women anymore? I don't like feeling like I'm not supposed to look at a pretty girl just because I'm at the gym. Plus, what the hell else am I gonna look at? Seriously, people have got to stop being so uptight about the smallest things in the world, and just learn to look at the positive; which a glance in your direction usually is.

I am the only girl that goes on the men-free weight side of the gym...getting stared at just comes with the territory...most of the time I pretend they don't exist and other times I feel thier primitive stare as if I shouldn't even be in there. Who knows?
