Even Layne Norton had a lame excuse why he thought Jay would beat Dexter and win the show. He said the judges would give it to Jay because he improved so much.
What a load of BS!
He won because he was the best there, period.

Congrats to all the competitors and Jay for his win!!
However, I completely disagree with Branch placing 2nd and Dexter 3rd, something is seriously wrong with that.

back off chief. I give Jay a lot of credit and I had it as a toss up. I had no problem with Jay winning because it was so close. I prefer a bit more symmetry; but again; I had no problem with Jay winning, so don't get your skirt all tangled up

Its actually over the course of an entire day. It is a two day event, prejudging Friday and the finals Saturday.
The conditions of the competitors do change. Jay lost the title last year on Friday. He was flat on Friday, and came back Saturday much fuller and tighter, but he has lost too much ground already to Dexter. Looks like Phil had the same problem.

His face said it all. But like Layne mentioned, pics vs live - there's such a huuuge difference.

I have a hard time believing any of Layne's commentary or justifications for Jay winning were 'lame.' It was good seeing you this weekend Layne, great job on the live updates on the forum here - it's nice to enjoy the weekend while it lasts, I know what its like to work the entire weekend, so I have a lot of respect for that LN.

Ironically... Jay's physique was so sick..... because he didn't get sick this year. This is what Jay Cutler can be/has been/will be, when his surrounding team and preceeding months of preparation are not derailed by 24 hours of sickness.

Did you think Dexter should have been placed 4th or lower, or you think he should have been placed 2nd? I agree... something was wrong with that. The competitors that bubbled to the top through callouts and through judging into the following Saturday night show seemed to share the trait of freaky muscular size. I cannot see, in the specific context of the remainder of the Top-6 excluding Dexter when the dust dettled, why so many mass monsters were being compared to each other and Dexter was able to weave his way into third. Dexter's physique is a classical impressive granite carved display of elegance; but it is not a parallel physique to be interwoven into this year's Top-3 when in contention with men like Kai and Branch.

Agreed... I'm typing this from the terminal in the Las Vegas Airport, reflecting on the week's events and outcomes, and I can clearly say Phil was amazing, almost beyond description with mere verbs, especially on Saturday - but in the end I was not directly unhappy with the placings, although there was a very obvious discrepency between the beauty and rock solid muscularity of Phil and Dexter - where I would have given Phil the nod above Dexter. Second and Third place could have toggled between Phil and Branch in my opinion, followed by Kai and Dexter.

True... I watched online replays (have a streaming one now in another tab as I make this post) and was also in the audience, and there is a difference; even on the overhead monitors and projector screens. But in the end, I don't see a broadcast quality version somehow negating the eventual placings of the atheltes.

After looking at score sheet...it was a toss up between all of Dexter, Branch, kai, and Phill for 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th places.
Jay was away with straight first places 5, 5, 5....
and main battle was between Dexter & Branch only one point margin (46 vs 47).
and Kai vs Phill (54 vs 55)...just image 9 points separated the four places...maybe it was the closest ever contest.
The ironic issue the points awarded in the final weights double of the prejudging, R1 & R2 were combined to weight as one round, unlike the final rounds.
So this the only reason why Dexter placed 3rd....Branch and Phill both beated Dexter in the final.

I read everthing you wrote, but you said it chief, not me. You said he will win because the judges will give it to him because he improved so much.
That comment seriously diminishes his win and really is lame. It makes it seem the judges want him to win and are looking for any excuse to give it to him.

that was not the intention of the comment. I thought it was a toss up and I thought that would be the thing to push Jay over the top. I give Jay all the credit in the world and congratulated him personally and told him how impressive it was. So calm yo ass down

Anyone know if Dexter has made any statements regarding his placing? I haven't been able to find any interviews. (other than backstage comments)

i thought this too. as for the top six, it was close 2-6 were almost interchangable on finals night. wasn't there for the pre's though. branch earned a 2/3 spot. i really think that dex only got a top three because he was the returning champ. he looked solid, but everyone else got SO much better.
and jay, although i was not a big fan of his before, flat out TOOK THE SHOW, and i have to say i am now.
just my two...

Yes, Sunday morning at the Superstar Seminar he said (in response to Peter M of Weider's question) it was like a "Slap in the face," and "Of course I should have won... a Mr. Olympia that improves never gets dethroned."

Sour grapes.
Maybe he improved, but maybe the others, especially Branch, improved EVEN MORE.
A Super Bowl winner or World Series champ is not automatically seeded into the playoffs each year. They have to earn it each year and because the competition may get better, they have to also.
I really like what I see in bodybuilding today. None of this winning ad infinitum consecutive titles in a row just by showing up.

Ego@door,
Hey bro - I wanted to say I really liked your comments. I've never given it a lot of thought, but the ongoing status quo of Mr. Olympia momentum usually pushing the incumbent into first place year-by-year really isn't a just victory by any means. I liked your Superbowl analogy; just as it all comes down to who throws more touchdowns, in the IFBB you can't show up like King Kong one year, and like a chimp the next - and expect to be donned with a Gold Medal and a Sandow.
And just to reiterate something that has been getting more attention but really should be paramount here in our retrospective discussions - Jay won with all firsts, perfect firsts and accompanying scores. The disparity between Jay and all contenders was dizzying.

He forgot that there were 2 Mr. Olympias in the contest that had improved.
He doesn't believe Jay gave the Olympia to him last year. The result this year proves that.

Everyone has their opinion on who should have won, who got screwed and all that. The FACT is Jay one. Period. Do I think he should have? Yup. He looked amazing. I was really hoping Dex would have kicked his ass but he wasnt 100% like Jay was. Nobody gave Dex the title last year, he earned it and nobody gave Jay the title this year... he took it.
