I laughed at the guy who said his quads are "only" 26". Mine are 25 on a good day!
I understand......I'm not saying my quads are skinny but most of the guys I've trained with for the last few years have 30+........thats why I say only 26".....
405x20 @184 is nearly world-class. The late Jesse Marunde could just barely pull it off, and he was a WSM contender.
Really?? Wow. I'm seriously humbled.
Man, I would feel so weird having someone video me. Having people watch is one thing. Having it TAPED is another. Nonetheless, I may have to arrange that. It would be kinda cool to have that vid when I'm, like, 80 or something. LOL

I have never heard of anyone doing that at that weight and size. I would still be shocked if it were 315 for 20 at that weight and size.
Can I be the first to say I do not believe it?
Sorry.
That's the best compliment yet!!!
Jimmy S. (of this site) works out with me. He was spotting me at the time if anyone wants to msg him about it. But I'll admit, nothing proves it like a vid.

I can sorta feel you on the 20 rep squats with 405 with a max of 500. I have no idea what my 1 rep max is on BB curls, anything I can curl once I can do for at least 5. My biceps seem to reenergize in miliseconds if that makes any sense.
In any event, congatulations! You lost me at 315x10 LOL
I'm stoked. I managed 405 lbs for 20 reps at a body weight of 184 today. I've been trying to do that for weeks. I'm sure I'll pay for it tomorrow. And the next day. And the next day. LOL
But hey, I've got 7 days to recover, right?
so in january (10 months ago) you decided to start lifting @ 210 and 20 % bf and now here it is sept, and you've dropped 25 lbs (or whatever) and you're doing 20 reppers with 405 ?
gonna need to see a vid and also gonna bet we won't see one....

I don't know where you got this information, but if it's true, that's enough for me to say that I DO NOT believe the claim of 405x20; and I prob wouldn't even believe it with a vid, lol.
Like Bill said, that is world-class lifting......on a cut?........hmmmm
At least we got teh LULZ!

It appears someone else read your blog entries. It isn't my intent to "hate" on you in any way excel but after reading some of your entries, the above one struck me as well as the 225x10 for 3 sets after 10 years of NOT squatting then only a week later your repping 405 for 10+ across 4 sets.
Please help me/us understand how it is this was achievable and yes a video would put the issue to rest.
Sorry Bill......just had too!

Wow! Geez... I never really thought that much about the whole 405x20 thing, but I guess it's a bigger deal than I thought. That's kinda cool (and kinda scary at the same time).
Okay, I'm thinkin' here... let's see... I have an old Sony MiniDV tape recorder but I hate using the stupid thing because transferring the vid to the computer is a pain in the ass (considering my computer is ancient). One of the guys at the gym might have a Flip. Those things are easy to use and the vid transfers easily to a computer. I'll ask around and see who's got one. I guess I could go out and buy one if it came to that (rolling my eyes).
Y'all bear with me. I'll get you some proof. I'm not afraid to prove it.

Didn't see the part about starting only 10 months ago. But yeah, world class squatting after only 10 months of training? Hmmm.....

If you post a vid squatting that kind of weight for that many reps, after only training for 10 months, you should get mod reps for life. LOL.
Seriously though, even if you only get 10 reps at 405 on vid, I will be impressed as hell.
And Marunde out-weighed you by probably 100 pounds.
I don't really understand why someone would feel "weird" posting a vid of a near World -class lift. Guys post vids all the time.
Marunde was in the 300-320 range. That's about 125 lbs difference!
I posted the same vid in another thread, and another poster made a comment that made me ponder a bit - Marunde just did powercleans easily enough with 374 lbs. Then he squats 407 lbs for 20 reps. I would have thought the squats numbers would be much higher than cleans (at least, in my case, I clean 155, but have done 20 rep squats with 235, but then I have been squatting over 2.5 yrs but cleaning for only 4-5 months on and off).
Also recall reading in Randall Strossen's book on super-squats what numbers used to be considered strong for the 20 reppers - at least1.5 x BW is what he wrote.
Just saying that probably there was a typo - may be the weights Marunde was squatting was quite a bit more than 407 lbs. But then, I could be wrong.

Hey this Mfer right here is for real! I work legs with him and its like the more reps he does the easier it gets. I've never saw anything like it. 315 seems like its hard to him then when he does 405 its like wtf? And not only does he do it 20 reps but he does 20 real reps. Not those half squats, sissy squats or whatever you wanna callem. Anyhow, good job Keith! YEAH!!

You know what's REALLY strange? I can NOT squat 500. I've tried on a few occassions but just can't do it. Maybe it's psychological... a mental roadblock of some sort. I dunno. It just seems weird that I can't do it, given my abilities at 4 plates. And it truly does feel REMARKABLY heavier than 405. Maybe I should start doing my last set at 425 or maybe 455 for fewer reps and slowly break down that psychological barrier. I'd love to hit 500 for a 3RM by my 39th birthday (next June). That would be cool.
But if I keep eating crappy food like I'm doing today, it ain't gonna happen. *sigh* Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are evil! Evil, I say!
There's a preparation strategy for hitting the PR's on squat.
You need to be doing 'walkouts' with more than the target weight for a while before attempting it.
When I was after 455, I would do walkouts with 495
When I was after 500, I'd do them with 545
When I hit 550, i had been doing 585 and 605 quarter squats with the stops set high for a few weeks
If you can do 405 x 20, you CAN do 500 x 1, it's all a mental block.
Start doing walkouts with 545, load, unrack, walk it into squat position, bounce a little (a LITTLE) walk it back and rerack, do this 2-3 times after each workout.
Pretty soon, you get the mental picture that "this weight will NOT crush me" and you'll hit 500
I am looking for you to hit this before the end of October
feel free to PM me with questions

Thanks Jimmy. Hey, just a heads-up... I'm gonna be working some really crazy hours at that food plant in Conyers later this week. I'll try to lift at my normal time today (chest/triceps) but I'm gonna miss Thursday and probably Friday.

Now, why didn't I think of that?? That's a great idea and it makes perfect sense. The moment I lift 500 from the rack, I'm immediately shocked at the sheer weight of it. The shock creates an instant doubt in my mind: "Dude, this weight is gonna kill you. You can't lift this. Put it back on the rack." It all goes downhill from there. Once your MIND is defeated, YOU are defeated. I'm gonna try that for the next several weeks. Thanks!

That's EXACTLY what happens.
550 was just sheer brutal heavy when I thought about trying it.
585 1/4 squats with the stops set, I knew I could press it that far, so once the weight did not scare me, 550 did not either
I still did the 1/4, then 1/2, then past 90degree squat with it
then tried another set and went 1/2 then too deep in the hole and that was too much on a second set
I did this in June, and have had several setbacks including minor surgery since then, so I'd have to start all over at 315 again
Oh yea, having a REALLY good spotter helps the mental aspect of it
When I got back to 500 recently, I went down on the first rep and came up going backwards, two hands in the lower back stopped me, then I did two more good reps
without him, I'm on the ground or in the hospital
