Probably b/c the majority of southerners talk slower than other parts of the country, so I guess people generalize the wheels upstairs aren't moving as fast. Add in the fact that we do have some ass backwards states that still have a lot of racial issues and poverty then I'd say the picture's pretty clear. I'll take listening to a southern accent any day of the week though.

But I use proper grammar but just slightly pronounce certain words differently
I dont throw in regional terms like "grubbin" or "reckon" or "i done did that" or whatever...
oh btw I dont pronounce "oil" correctly....i say "ol" instead of "oy-uhl"

Growing up we learn certain biases (positive or negative) toward certain accents. That is why British accents are highly regarded and due to certain stereotypes Southern accents are seen as unintelligent. It could also be associated with the manner certain words are pronounced and articulated by southern people and it could be perceived as unintelligent, which is not necessarily true

I didn't say they all did. I live in Virginia, it's not like I am in Illinois.
But generally speaking, people associate that accent with ****ty grammar. I can go to the gas station or grocery store across the street from my office and hear it. Actually, I can walk across to the other side of my office and hear "Lawd'a'mercy, Mama just called me up on the phone because she ain't got no gas in huh car and she done ran out. I ain't gonna be gone too long."
OP asked why, and that's why. Right or wrong, that is the generalization and that is why the southern accent is frowned upon by people who lack them.

Consider it a stereotype, probably affiliated with the "Beverly Hillbillies" and "Deliverance" protagonist/antagonists, but it most likely goes deeper than that. There are smart and dumb people everywhere, it's just the dumb people get the most attention for, well, being dumb, so it fits the stereotype.
