When I begin to think too much there is nothing like a balls to the wall training session to center me.

I mentioned a few posts back about WB's twice narrow escape from death in a Lear Jet and Limo the same weekend...I learned this morning that the FAA investigation showed the Lear out of fuel (caused by flame out in one of two engines) for the last 120 seconds on its glide path into the Monerey Airport subsenquently buring the nose into the Tarmack. The Limo driver died yesterday from injuries sustained in the crash. WB goes to the Bay area Thurs. for his deposition. Irony...they are sending the sister Lear to pick him up. Fate. G was missing in action again this morning. Our prediction is that she 'toned' herself up....found her man and we will see little of her in the future. Cocktail parties beat 4:30 am training sessions....right?

Today as planned..deltissamus and latissamus BIG TIME. Rapid fire Arnolds high reps from the 20s thru the 55s. Side delt flys. Front delts holding the 45er out in front for slo mo raises with a hold of 2 counts straight out. Rear delt face pulls. Then a hybrid rack pull to full shrug...285 x 10 x 4 sets. Holy Moly!! 3 sets of hanging leg ups to the sides and front.

Done....now off to dwell amongst the swamp creatures of the business world.

Way way back about 30 days ago I thought I tore my abs during chins. A ripping sensation left of my navel. A day later it was painful at the surface of the skin to the touch. I could stangely do ab work??? Later when I had a Thai massage the lady said it was classic Colitis. Yet when she shoved her nuckles deep into my belly no pain. Crazy. Still sore a hell to the mere touch. Fast forward. Went to Doc today for the common flu shot (not the Swine flu) and blood test for gout and liver panel. He checked out my abs compalint...ta daa...torn nerve. Yup. Crazy huh??

Swine flu. My Doc has had 2 confirmed cases. A 40 year old man was hospitalized with a fever of 102 and lungs filling fast. They drained his lungs and he survived. His 2 children had slight cases and it skipped right over his wife. They just came back from Texas/Mexico border. A 30 year old West Los Angeles man in amazing athletic health died. Most vulnerable ages....20 to 30. Doc says if you get a fever approaching 102 run do not walk to emergency room. If you have flu symptoms TAKE TAMIFLU. Double the dosage....one in the am and one in the pm. He went to a City wide seminar yesterday and came away with doubt about the pending Federal vaccine. "Tamiflu and emergency room will save your life". He is taking this SERIOUS. I am now.....

Thanx Supe. Always love to celebrate the Pearl brothers.

Back day here in 15. Had to take a Motrin for the flu shot side effect. Sore arm and ever so 'fluish'. OK now....come on Iron !!

Use It Or Lose It

Just an FWIW:

A lot of this is common sense to most of us, but at least now there has been some science applied to LBM loss in the O65:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/32841213...health-fitness

Of note, and again the obvious:

"In a follow-up study, the research team found that three exercise sessions a week over 20 weeks was enough to reverse muscle wasting by increasing blood flow to the legs of older people to a level identical to the younger group."

Yipes...I had better cut my training in half....3 days a week right?
Actualy training at this age is like 3 steps forward and 2 steps back. The net outcome is a plus. Then one day it will be 2 for 2...treading water....then finally no matter how you eat or train...1 step forward and 2 back. Dread that day...it's out there. Meanwhile my belly has seen 200 gm protein so far today and my body 90 min of all things rowing plus dead lifts....yowzer.

Bury me BIG.

More is better my friends...

I read an hour a day minimum many science journals and nutritional studies regarding sarcopenia and overall aging. I experiment on myself and antecdotaly report back to you.

It is now an established fact that seniors absorb amino acids poorly which is part of the aging process. However it is also established that 'over loading' the aging body with full spectrum aminos (whey protein is the best) and specific BCCAs (Leusine being the key player) can hault sarcopenia and slow the aging wasteing process. I am talking to the over 40 group. Younger people absorb aminos properly. The older you are the more important it is that you 'over load' with protein and most important BCCAs.

It is also established that lean is mean. Lower fat levels in seniors regulates insulin better. Insulin can be a friend as well as an enemy.

On my journey to Pittsburg I am staying lean here for 18 months. A first for me. I have upped my protein from 200+ gms daily in my 50s to now 300+ gms and BCCAS about 3 times a day.

I'm lean mean and etching my initials on the back of urinals.

The prize will be the title of Over 70 National Bodybuilding Champion. It lies 2128 miles due east and one year from today. I also want to bring the look of a Bodybuilder to this age group. The current champion and recent winners have amazing personal stories, great gentlemen all, are marvelous examples of training consistency, dedication, and diet. They all have been blessed with youthfull skin for their age (my nemises having had an auto immune disease and tattoos). In my minds eye they all miss muscle mass, bicept peak, shoulder width, glute/hamstring development. Last Saturday at 6am I went into the ballroom where the NPC Masters Nationals prejudging was held the night before. Alone in the vast room , I stood on the X marked on center stage and did my mandantories. I marked my spot like the DOG I am. In a year I will not be a stranger to that X....I OWN IT!!!!

I must thank my friends on the Board and in particular my young brothers I shared a day with a few days ago in Pittsburg. I love all of you. Each and every one of you inspire me and have proven to me beyond a shadow of doubt that I have chosen my path in life wisely.

Tomorrow is day one in the gym. What will be different is that I will NOT allow myself to ever bulk again. I will control carbs on a daily basis...doing Keto again early on if I must. My skin can not stretch like it did for the past 12 years. I will grow legs/hams/glutes/and even larger biceps. I have everything else needed in this O 70 class. My new lifting belt and dip/chin weight belt is on order. I have ordered a tractor trailer full of suppliments.

Lets do it!!

8 months down....10 short months to go.

Supy and James...both of you men move some heavy iron around that gym.

James...I am actualy growing some legs on me. Can you believe that? Not slabs of beef but deep separation which will look good enough if I can shrink that last little bit of internal intestinal fat off here in the next 10 months. 32" waist now...I have had a 31" in my best days. Need to get there. My body weight hit 201 yesterday...up 6 from Pitt. Honestly 4 pounds muscle 2 pounds water. I am still very lean. I have no idea WTF my BF ratio is since I rely on the mirror. I SWAG it at 7-8%. That means I need to be 2-3% at 190-192 pounds in July. Still 30 pounds bigger that what we saw last July in the warm up room.

I have been training for so many years that I need to always set up a new challenge in order to keep my enthusiasm high (as if standing on the stage at Muscle Beach with 20 year olds and the Nationals with the Nations best 70 year olds next year is not a challenge). Twice a week stomach hurling leg workouts is my challenge. So far my 3 times scopped knees are hanging in there. Why...I have no idea. Must be nutrition/suppliments. My Ortho Doc wanted to do knee replacements about 8 years ago. Go figure?? I go so deep on the hacks with 6 plates on board that I am surprised my skinny little knee caps just don't launch themselves.

Today is rest, repair, honeydo, and USC football day. The hot dry Santa Ana winds are set to howl this week. We are in a drought and my yard is on the fringe of dying with the twice a week 10 min only watering allowed. Saturdays and Tuesdays. I will start here in a moment with the sun still down to get the maximum bank for the water to soak in. We have some 2 million homes in the desert called L.A. County and they are all landscaped like Maui. If El Nino hits this winter we will all wash away in the mud from the fire de nuded hills.

I am such the bastard. I tossed a land mine into the Over 35 open forum on the 80/20 diet vs training paradigm used by Bodybuilders who want to look like a Bodybuilder. Like I expected it got about 75% agreement and 25% hissy fit. Time to shake up the troops...ya think?

Bodybuilders are truly a trivial sub culture in the scheme of things. Too bad. We do have a dicipline that propels us ahead of the pack. Rather than take away from family, work, and our spiritual place in the Universe, Bodybuilding enhanses these things. Often as we try to explain the creedo we live by, many see us as elitists and tag our reverence to the word 'Bodybuilder' as meerly semantics.

Here is what they (the naysayers) don't get. We (I do include myself) are constantly critiqueing ourselves and demanding more from ourselves. Never quite satisfied. We look in the mirror not in visual masterbation vanity way but as stone cold judges.

Spinner...go in the corner NOW!! Say 12 Fight Ons.

USC was out coached..... Period. Pete stayed with a 3rd rate QB and had Mustain sitting on the bench. Aaaarrrrg!! Special teams coach had an undiciplined lot that clipped on EVERY return but one sticking USC in terrible field position with end zone crowd noise and a starey eyed QB.

I want my money back Pete!!!!!!!!!! I blame every conference loss on YOU Pete.

Surprise. G survived her party she gave for her new boyfriend's friends. WB and I thought that she might succomb to the crowds. Wrong!! She trained with steely eyed dedication today. Dips, chins, flat bench pull overs, brachs, behind the neck pull downs, one handed pull downs, bare foot seated calf, glute hypers and medicine ball crunches. Yipes!! WB is hiding somewhere recovering from his brush with death last week. The Big Chill.

Glad we don't have sound here on BB.com. Good grief the waaaaaaaa waaaaaaaa snif snif waaaaaaaaa waaaaaaaaa is getting louder on my 80/20 thread. Some men are tho thenthitive. Nobody takes the time to read entire threads. They just jump in and take something out of context or refuse to belive the truth and get all pissy. I guess this place mirrors society in general.

That would take some effort though to read the WHOLE thread! You know the word "EFFORT" as in "EFFORT" in diet or training or just living a full life! LOL!

I actually read the entire thread. Went off in to many tangents so I kept my mouth shut. You have been around long enough to know PEOPLE. Push that vein back in your forehead and don't let it get to you. You have bigger and better things happening...or I should say, you are making bigger and better things happen!

Thanx Phil....always good to have you chime in. I posted it hoping to get my fellow Iron hurlers on board as Bodybuilders. I think it got quite a few men thinking positive and differently. If so perfect. Mission accomplished.

I saw an old friend Doug Brignoli, Mr. America, Mr. Universe, featured in this months Ironman. Had to bring it home tonight. He has kept most of his physique but something happened to his pecs? Very strange. Anyway nice to see Lonnie Tepper highlight Doug. I give Doug credit for the clean Keto which is so popular today. He also threw in one cheat meal a week to spur the Leptin load. In this sense he was a pioneer.

They are clueless for the most part. Awfully sensitive too! Anyway, the mods want it all nicey nice over there. Too bad. I miss the old days when we bashed heads all the time, then settled it like men and went on our way.

I guess that's why most of the old crew just left of don't post much anymore. Well at leas I have the phone numbers and emails of all the important peep to me already! If I want to talk to them, I can just call or email!

Well they closed the other thread. I didn't see anything so wrong with it. We were just discussing an issue for Petes sake, not deciding who goes to heaven or hell or something. I'm pretty much done with the boards anyway, except for the small one where I post workouts and comment once a week on others journals. Will visit this thread out of mad respect for Baldie and cause its entertaining. But that's it. Too many things in real life falling apart (87 year old dad with multiple personality disorders and early senility, car repoed and not enough money to get it out, etc etc) to waste a lot of time online. Ed and Bill will hopefully see you in person, if not next July then some day. Keep up the dream.

James...I PMed you.

OK I have had enough of the O35 anyway. Luvs my peeps in here. We shall continue the slow march towards Pittsburgh (with an h). I trust what I do and say in Advanced is still alright with the mods. Just in case, I have started another running blurb on another smaller site where anything goes. Refreshing.

For one I appreciate all of your (everyone's) contributions. Learned a long time ago "There ain't no one of us as smart as all of us". It is a shame that there are a lot of people who don't post anymore for the reasons you all cite. My loss....

Baldie, please continue to share your wisdom and knowledge with the rest of us who want to learn. I have learned so much over the last few years; however, it took me a while to understand how important sound nutrition is.

Keep posting!

Don't worry about the forums, Baldie. Sure, there are many who are clueless, insecure, blind, or generally just try to be disagreeable. But amongst them are those who are truly here to learn.

Share your experiences and advice for them, not the masses.

(After all, Harry Pearl didn't kick Shoulders Moran and his skinny sidekick to the curb....)

Bill,

If you keep spreading your knowledge and inspiration on the boards, I will in turn give up my bagels

If you leave the masses have won a significant victory.
We find that our commander in chief is doing an excellent job here not only informing but leading by example.

Just in case, I have started another running blurb on another smaller site where anything goes. Refreshing.

Hmmmmmmm...... In a state of pondering.........

I get about 15 requests for friends adds a day on bb.com. Every week it is more then the the week before. Many are helpless and hopeless. Almost everyday I get a man PM me, some are just down right desperate. Thank God I've put my best posts on my blog. I send em there if they haven't read them as most everything about me is on them. It almost always answers thier questions plus give them much more.

Yet one day, and I can't even remember doing it, I must have given a certain man a bit more attention. He PM'd me and told me how his life has changed in the last year. He started out by telling me how he PM'd me a year ago desperate for help. I sent him to my blogs as usual and he said they changed his life forever. He said I continued to encourage him, again I can't really remember doing it, and every time he got discouraged he'd go to my profile and blogs and get inspired again.

Well then he said, "Since you've helped me starting a year ago, at 40 years old, I've lost over a 100lb, got in shape, landed the job of a lifetime and met the girl of my dreams and getting married! Thank you for giving me my life!"

I was crying like a baby after I read it. All the trophy's in the world. All the pats on the back! All the looks of admiration! All the acclimation's from the masses I get daily on my profile.... PALE...... PALE... in comparison to what this man gave to me that day. I walked around for several days with a goofy humbled grin on my face.

This bbing stuff is all fine and good, yet it is the giving back, the friendships forged, that are what is REAL in the sport. It truly is the journey and not the prize at the end that will last forever.

The funny thing is we mostly will never know how we have changed the lives of those we meet and know. Yet I can say inquivagably, Bill.... you have changed my life for the better for ever!. I will look forward with great anticipation with our friendship over the years. THX my Brother in Iron! ed aka Ol Supe aka Popps

I think he might do it if you promise to stop running for cardio!
