Cool Mantra meditation works

It works. Tina Turner used a Buddhist one "nom myo ho renge Kyo" and it gave her power to overcome her fears and be a stronger more centered person. If you chant it inwardly so that nobody knows what you are doing you can do it almost all day. It leads to waves of peacefullness where you are very centered and nothing can bother you. I know this because at work I deal with hostile and aggressive clients and when I get into that zone I am literally unphased by verbal abuse and reach out with firmness yet kindness at the same time. I used to chant outwardly OM and after doing it for awhile it led to visions and lucid dreams in which the chanting continued. But not looking for visions and such, more so peace and equanimity.

Yes, indeed it works. At first you can begin by chanting it when you are in a peaceful state (after prayer or meditation), and then gradually it becomes more automatic, and it can be an internal sound. Different mantras are for different purposes. Quantum mechanics is demonstrating that everything in the universe is light and vibration - that the appearance of solidity is in fact an illusion (even a 'solid' chair is made up of atoms that are 90% empty space). And the human body is only capable of producing vibration (transmitted vibration - one that moves through air) through sound. Hence the use of mantras to center the body/mind.

Why do you think this works? I can think of a few scientific reasons but I'm sure there must be more to it.

Actually its nam myoho renge kyo. It's said to draw the power of the universe to you and help you attain a state of buddhahood. The UK branch of this type of Buddhism can be found at www.sgi-uk.org

Hmmm right after I give the thread a bump we have a Bounce lol. I love this type of irony

I am not sure of all the science behind it. Generally our minds chatter about many things but focusing on one seems to slow that chatter down and manifest as peace and calmness. It is like having a classroom of hyper kids then you show them a cartoon and they qiuet down and watch it. It is corraling the attention. But psamty knows better about mantric meditation than me.

Its not only chanting that. You're meant to chant passages from the Lotus Sutra morning and evening too. It's all in Chinese so its written out phonetically in the little books they give you. All the people I know who chant, and there are many, all say it has benefited them enormously.

This is definitely a part of it, it helps you focus. In that sense, any mantra is useful (provided it gets you to focus on the right thing).

However, there are two secondary criterion. For example, for a Christian, a mantra like "Hail Mary" is much more useful then saying "Aham brahmasmi" (loosely translated as I am spirit), because the former has more meaning.

At the same time, there are mantras specifically designed to tune your body to certain feelings, emotions, or targeted towards higher intentions. None of this is to be taken on faith, one can try these out themselves and verify experimentally whether it works for them. In general, Eastern spiritual practices do not rely on faith (although faith is helpful) as much as experimentation and application of methods in a scientific manner (using one's body as the laboratory and one's consciousness as the experiment log).

Hmmm...sounds like Eastern Spirituality would appeal more to jackfast1

From a mystic view point mantras have no divine power in or of themselves, it is not the matra that invokes the spirtual experience, it is the self and the whole.

In eastern thought scripture recital, prayer, mediation and mantras all serve the same purpose weather the practioner realises or not. That purpose it is disengage your limited conscious thinking mind. Only when you do this can the subconscious limitless unthinking mind pervade your worldly experience.

Initially this happens inside the experience of prayer, mediation or chanting but eventually will spread beyond this limitation. Only then can you realise the unity and interpenetration of reality and the peace that comes with it.

Good job Forge man

I'm sure you are aware of the Jesus Prayer Forge3. Mantra work is indeed very powerful. Namu Amida Butsu is very popular as well (as practiced in Shin).

Today I read Derek Lings' commentary on the Tao. He compared the statement "I belive in the Tao" is equivalent as saying "I believe in my height"

Actually, I would say to the contrary. What they do not rely on however is blind faith. Perhaps that is what you are referring too.
