Muay Thai and MMA

Muay Thai

We started with a warm up of 30 seconds of different bicep, tricep, and shoulder exercises with dumbbells. I did the 15lb ones. We also worked weighted jabs, crosses, hooks, and uppercuts. Holding the dumbbells got old after about 5 minutes so it was definitely good for the grip strengths. After that we covered our punching combos as a refresher and also our kicks. After that we did 5 four minute rounds of kicking and punching combos. The last couple rounds got tough but my high kicks were money. My partner didn't give me body kicks so it was good getting all the high kick work in, especially with me left leg.

MMA

We spent the first 30 minutes going over how to break the plum and single collar ties into body locks and other takedowns. After that we drilled them live with the person getting the takedown staying in, if they got 3 takedowns in a row they would rotate out. We ended with 3 five minute rounds of MMA sparring, starting from the feet and going to the takedown. I was working the rubber guard and would have been beating the crap out of my partner had it been for real. I had him stuck and just eating punches and elbows and when he managed to pull up I went to the omoplata and took his back.

My cardio felt good for going through 8 five minute work rounds and weighed 192 after training with drinking 2 liters of water throughout the two hours.

MMA

For MMA we didn't do a crazy warm up or anything, we just did a lot of rounds of grip fighting, pummeling, working for the plum and setting up duck unders, arm drags, and other takedown setups. We had 14 guys in class so we did a minute with each person. After that we worked on some take downs off of inside bicep control and after that did some live takedown work from the clinch. I hit a good hip toss and a couple lateral drops along with a suplex and inside trip. I am expanding my takedowns much past the double leg so that is a good thing.

Muay Thai[

We did the same dumbell warm up as Tuesday's class to start with and then covered some kicking and punching combos. We had a lot of new guys in checking out the gym so I was teaching a couple of them the punches and kicks and how to hold the pads etc. I did get a couple rounds on the thai pads at the end. Working with the new guys and focusing on technique helped my padwork a lot. I was much more crisp than usual.

No Gi

In No Gi we covered the Brabo, Anaconda, and Arm In Guillotine. We then worked them, transitioning from one to the other in the same order. It was a pretty slick chain of subs that I was able to pull off during our situational rolling at the end. We started our rolling being in the north/south position on our knees and going from there. My sit out when I was on bottom was money. I really like that arm in guillotine too.

Open mat

I rolled with a guy who has only been coming to the gym for a few months first. I was walking him through stuff, like when I would pass how I did it and what he could do to prevent it, same with submissions. I showed him some sweeps and ways to reguard too. After that I worked for about 20 minutes with another White Belt, he has been training about a year and a half. He was working on his attacks from guards, so I was working my defenses and passes from there. We then rolled for about 15 minutes. Caught him with a head and arm triangle and a triangle. Also got a straight arm bar from side control on the far side. After that I rolled with coach for about 20 minutes. He was really working on his deep half guard. I don't mind being on top in that position since there are some good opportunities for kimuras. I locked a couple good ones up on him, he went to tip me but I was able to post out on my head. One time I rotated on the arm and went to an arm bar. I thought I had it for a second but his elbow wasn't far enough up and he pulled out. On one scramble I managed to catch his head and arm in a reverse triangle from the back. I had it locked for a couple minutes trying to get his arm all the way across his neck but to no avail. I was on my back the whole time and when I went to try and roll to get on top he postured up and got out. I got worked over good from there but it was worth it.

Open Mat

I started with 5 minutes of jump rope then I did five 5 minute round on the heavy bag and tear drop bag. Worked combos incorporating kicks and punches. Mainly worked knees and slipping followed by hooks and uppercuts on the tear drop bag. I was really working on my power today, that and my distance. I have a problem of jamming myself and punching too close. I really made sure I was getting full extension out of my arms on my straight punches. My hook is getting pretty damn good, especially the lead.

I must have missed the memo about it being Blue Belt Open Mat, because almost all of our Blue Belts were there. I rolled about 15 five minute rounds, changing partners each time. Pretty much went with each person twice. Started on the feet 75% of the time and got a bunch of good take downs. I am really gettin the inside and outside trip down. The takedown set up that has worked the best lately for me is getting the plum, even in just no gi, yanking them down like I am trying to pull them down to the mat, and the second the resist I let go and they pop straight up and I shoot in for a double leg and rotate them straight to side control.

A lot of guys have been working Butterfly Guard from the bottom so what I have started doing is reaching over both legs, hugging them together until my hand is pretty much wrapped over my opposite elbow, and then I shimmy up their legs that are trapped together into mount. I have even pulled this off on a couple Blues so it isn't like I was just picking on new guys. I got a guy in that same revers triangle from the back that I got coach in yesterday but I was able to finish it today. Also hit a kimura on a guy too. Rolled for a couple armbars too. One I missed but I got my hips back in and went straight to a triangle attempt. The round ended before I could really get it locked in. My transitions from submission attempts have gotten much better the last few weeks, even with only getting to class 3 days a week.

Muay Thai and MMA

Muay Thai

Started off with a set of pull ups. I usually do 15 but I hadn't really pushed it in a month or so and was able to get 20 so that was the first time in a couple years. Just like back in my Marine Corps days. We started with some agility drills for our warm up that included box jumps, depth jumps, hurdles, ladder drills and various other jumping exercises. After that we covered defenses and counter combos.

Round 1

Minute 1: Catch and jab simultaneously
Minute 2: Catch and throw the cross
Minute 3: Catch and jab simultaneously and follow with the cross
Minute 4: Mix up the above three

Round 2

Minute 1: Slip and throw a cross
Minute 2: Slip and throw a jab to the body
Minute 3: Slip and throw a jab to the body, followed by a cross
Minute 4: Mix up the above three

Round 3

Minute 1: Slide and throw a cross
Minute 2: Slide and throw a rear hand uppercut
Minute 3: Slide and jab, followed by a rear hook to the body
Minute 4: Mix up the above three

My hands felt good, especially my cross. I think my heavy bag work on Sunday made some of the difference. It was much crisper and faster than usual and my hands came back to my chin every time.

MMA

We were working with our guys fighting on September 19th and did the following 3 minute rounds with them.

Rounds 1 and 2: Striker vs Striker
Rounds 3 and 4: Striker vs Grappler
Rounds 5 and 6: Grappler vs Striker
Rounds 7 to 10: Grappler vs Grappler (starting from the feet and working to the ground and going to submission)

I felt good today, granted I was only in every other round so that makes a difference.

MMA

It was awesome! We did quarter mile sprints to start off with again, oh joy! Did one lap to warm up with at about 75% and then did 6 laps at 100%. I was much better today than when we did it last time. I was with the fast group. I ran all 6 in 1:40, with 20 seconds rest before starting the next lap.

After that we did about 10 three minute rounds of sparring. I felt good today. My head movement was much better and I was working the double jab and switch kick a lot.

Muay Thai

For Muay Thai we did the box jumps, foot movement, running the ladder etc warm up we did a couple days ago. After that we covered weaving to avoid the hook, countering off the weave, blocking the hook, countering of the block, blocking the uppercut, countering off the block, then rocking away from the uppercut, and then countering off the rock. We did 4 rounds on the focus mitts covering what we worked. My lead hook is feeling much faster, especially at getting back to protect my grill

No Gi

We covered the Peruvian Neck Tie, the Head and Arm Triangle, and a revers head and arm triangle that I liked a lot. After that we did 3 five minute rounds of rolling. The first two rounds I went with the same guy. We are exactly the same size and about the same point in our training so it was a good person to work with. I hit the triangle from the back again and a guillotine. I used the omoplata to sweep as well. After that I went with our Blue Belt who is fighting Sept 19th. I almost muscled him into a head and arm triangle from the bottom but I turned it into a sweep. He managed to get mount and tried for the mounted triangle but I bucked and rolled out of it and into side. I managed to get to knee on belly for a few seconds, so that is finally improving. He swept me back when I got to high and I went for a kimura from bottom but time ran out.

Open Mat

I rolled with coach for the first 20 minutes of open mat and faired pretty well. He got into that deep half guard again and I went for the kimura and when he went to go out the back door I almost got that triangle from the back again. I managed to curl back under and grab a leg and tip him to where I get into his half guard. I tripoded up and slid my knee out and into side control and worked on just holding him there. When I did end up going to attack his arm he shrimped into me and tipped me back over. He got to mount a couple times but I was able to buck and get to half guard, finally locking it down pretty tight on the third attempt. He got back to mount and was working the mounted triangle so I bucked and he went to his back, still with the triangle. I postured up and held him off for a bit but he ended up getting it. After that I rolled for about 15 minutes with the same blue belt from before, starting on the feet. He was tired so I was able to get double unders and take him down into side control. He was throwing up stuff from the bottom like crazy, he actually caught me in a triangle but I managed to fight it for a couple minutes and his legs got tired enough he couldn't keep it up. He swept me and I started pulling myself around to his back from the bottom. I got there and got a body triangle and was working for a RNC or arm bar from there but the round timer went off and we stopped.

When I got home I got to mow the yard. It was nice and hot and humid too but it capped off a nice sweaty end to 5 and a half hours of non stop activity.

Open Mat

Started off with a set of 20 Pull Ups and then did 5 minutes of jumping rope.

We started with sparring.

Two 5 Minute Rounds of Boxing
Six 5 Minute Rounds of Kickboxing

Today was easily my best sparring session yet. My combos were good and I was getting good angles. I did eat a kick to the liver that made me feel like I was briefly going to **** myself. I answered with a nice cross back, but man, it sucked.

We then worked on the ground. I rolled for 20 minutes with one of our Blue Belts. I got my triangle from the back again. It is becoming a new go to move for me

After that we did MMA sparring. We did five 5 minute rounds. My cardio felt really good today and that was working with the 3 of our guys fighting in a couple weeks.

The next fight card after September is November 14th and I am going to be out of town so it looks like I won't be fighting again until after New Years. I guess it is going to be good getting a lot more training in. I should be much better off than my first fight.

How do you feel about the moniker "everybody's all-american"? You'd have to use it befor your full name, as opposed to between first and last. I like it. I think you should go with that.

Muay Thai and MMA

Muay Thai

We started with a jump rope and medicine ball workout. After that we covered the various elbows and how to hold the pads for them since we had a lot of new people. After that we Did a circuit where it was a different elbow strike or combination of elbows each minute on the heavy bag or on the thai pads.

MMA

For MMA we started with pummeling to set up the takedown, we did three 3 minute rounds of that. After that we worked takedowns from the clinch, winner stayed in for up to three times and then rotated out. After that we did escapes from the bottom, the down person picked where to start and the winner stayed down. I worked from the mount everytime and am getting the knee to elbow escape down well, especially when I use my far heel to get their leg over my leg.

Deadlifts

BPP got me all motivated to Deadlift so I did that tonight. I threw in some Military Press afterwards and some abs.

Deadlifts - 135 x 5, 185 x 5, 225 x5, 315 x 3, 365 x 3, 415 x 3, 315 x 5, 225 x 10
_____________

Seated Dumbbell Military Press - 25 x 20, 35 x 15, 45 x 15, 55 x 12, 55 x 10, 55 x 10 (I plan on starting to work my 80lb dumbbells in in the near future)

Supersetted with

Sit Ups - 50, 50, 50, 50, 50, 50

For the situps they aren't just normal sit ups. I have my legs go down to where my feet hit flat on the ground as I roll my back flat on the ground and then sit up, bringing my knees to meet my face pretty much. I like the stretch it gives me after each rep.

Instead of throwing on two 10lb plates I just went with a 25 instead. It sucked if it makes you feel any better.

Dang skippy, and of course it is going to only be between us since all the other Clinchers are slackers.

It is probably best I deadlifted tonight too. If I had done it tomorrow I would have been wrecked for training on Saturday most likely.

MMA, Muay Thai, No Gi, Open Mat

MMA

For MMA we warmed up with some hand fighting and pummeling, working a minute with each partner and rotating until we had gone through everyone, 6 people, twice. After that we worked the inside trip, outside trip off the failed inside trip, taple top, and lateral drop. We also worked on some finer points of wrestling, like hand and head placement when clinching and a good controlling front head lock.

Muay Thai

For Muay Thai we covered elbow and knees, including some elbows from the guard. After that we did some work on the pads.

Round 1

Minute 1: Jab (worked a lot of doubles)
Minute 2: Jab, Cross
Minute 3: Hook, Uppercut
Minute 4: Jab, Cross, Hook, Uppercut

Round 2

Minute 1: Cross Elbows
Minute 2: Up Elbow, Cross Elbow
Minute 3: Cross Elbow, Spinning Back Elbow
Minute 4: Jab, Spinning Back Fist

Round 3

Minute 1: Up Knee, Round Knee
Minute 2: Push Kicks
Minute 3: Round Kicks (worked a lot of doubles)
Minute 3: Inside Leg Kick, Spinning Back Kick

Round 4

Minute 1: Rear Leg Round Kick, Superman Punch
Minute 2: Rear Knee, Flying Elbow

No Gi

For No Gi we spent the time working on getting into X Guard and then on some takedowns and sweeps from there, as well as a transition to a knee bar. We rolled live, starting in the X Guard. I liked it because it presents a lot of scrambles and I work well out of there.

Open Mat

For Open Mat I rolled for about 20 minutes with one of the white belts who has been there a couple months longer than me. He was doing a lot better than usual so I had to step it up a bit. Hit some good sweeps. For the subs I was going catch and release, trying to transition between them as fluidly as possible. I worked the triangle, to armbar, to taking the back pretty well. After that I did some MMA rolling with our Blue Belt getting ready for a fight. We started on the feet and it took about 5 minutes before we got to the mat since we kept nullifying what the other was trying to do. He finally went for a lateral drop that I resisted by going limp and I went to take the back and he pulled me under but on the way down I threw up a triangle. It held him up a minute and once he was about to get out I pulled my hips back, sat up and shot in from my ass still and got to half guard. He managed to work to my back and I would rotate into his guard. He swept to mount and I gave up the back, rotated back to guard and the 10 minute round ended there.

Open Mat

For Open May we spent the whole time sparring. I warmed up working on the tear drop bag, using footwork to get out of the way and changing distance and angles, specifically for hooks and uppercuts. For sparring we did the following 4 minute rounds.

Round 1: Jab Sparring
Round 2: Jab, Cross Sparring
Round 3: Hooks and Uppercuts Sparring
Rounds 4 and 5: Boxing Sparring
Rounds 6 and 7: Sparring from the Clinch, using light knees, hooks, and uppercuts
Rounds 8 and 9: Sparring with just kicks
Rounds 10 to 20: Kickboxing Sparring

I felt good, especially with the kicks. My defenses are much better which have made my counters much more effective, especially with my cross, it has gotten much faster since I have started focusing on it the last month or so. I hit the switch kick on everyone at least a couple times. I was working a jab, cross, rear leg head kick, lead leg head kick, jab to the body, cross, and lead hook combo. It seriously gives them no time to do anything but defend. I ate a good head kick that definitely tested my chin. It didn't phase me in the slightest all though the jaw where it hit is a bit tender. I caught the next one he threw and dumped him on his ass. Cardio felt good, although it was getting tough to keep the hands up the last couple rounds. Was weighing 190 afterwards so the weight is still holding steady.

Open Mat

I warmed up with a set of 20 pull ups, 20 push ups, 10 bodyweight lunges for each leg, and 50 sit ups. I did this four times, but my pull ups went 17, 15, 15 for the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th sets.

After that we did kickboxing sparring. We started with 2 four minute rounds of light sparring, really focusing on technique. After that we did 10 four minute rounds at about 75%. My switch kick was money again as well as the double jab, lead hook. My long arms are coming in hand for my lead hook, I can hit that thing from forever away. I really worked on the cross to the body too. I got one guy as he stepped into it and it doubled him over, I felt bad for a second, until he came up swinging in berserker mode. My jab was coming back low today, I am assuming I am a bit worn out from all the sparring yesterday too, as it usually comes back high, protecting my grill.

After sparring we did some no gi rolling. I rolled for 30 minutes with our best wrestler and blue belt. He has been tapping our Purples as of late so he is a handful. He is the exact same height and weight as me. I managed to get to side control a couple times and threw up some triangles, from the front and back off of scrambles. Nothing really landed since we were sweaty as hell. He got my back a few times but I rolled to give him mount and then did the elbow to knee to get to half guard and work back to guard from there. He did end up catching me with a straight arm bar, the one in between the american and kimura. After him I rolled with another blue belt who took advantage of my being tired from rolling with the last guy. He caught me in a triangle that seriously took me two minutes to get out of. I got to half guard, then slid my trapped knee through his legs and into mount. He gave me his back and worked for the RNC for a while and then went for the arm bar from the back. I didn't get it and lost position so I got him in my guard and swept. From his guard he went for a kimura and didn't control my legs. From there I trapped his arm spun around his head and settled in for the arm bar. It was the first time I have hit that, it is what Matt Hughes did to beat GSP their first fight. It is a slick sub and I was glad I finally pulled it off.

Muay Thai and MMA

Muay Thai

For Muay Thai I worked with two new guys going over the jab, cross, hook, uppercut, knees and round kick. I covered some combos and how to hold the pads for the punches and kicks. Didn't get much of a workout in but it was good review for me too.

MMA

We started off with a bunch of level changes and penetration steps, from orthodox and south paw stances. We then worked on jabbing and shooting, then jabbing, shooting, and lifting our partner. After that we worked on a knee tap for when the sprawl away from you and then covered an outside trip. After that we did some situational rolling. We spent 5 minutes each, starting in the mount, side control, and with someone on our back. I didn't have much energy today, I guess the last 3 days of training took more out of me than I thought. I am taking tomorrow off to, don't plan on lifting either, so hopefully I will be nice and fresh on Thursday.

Since I am going to be out of town on November 14th I won't be able to fight until after New Years but my coach wants me to do a submission only tournament on December 5th so that will most likely be my next form of competition. I will work on getting my cardio back up some more so I can wear guys down if I need to. It will be nice competing at 195 and not Heavyweight as well.

Muay Thai and MMA

Both classes were the same as Tuesday night, so I can save myself a bunch of typing. I did find out that they moved the fight card in November up a week so I will be here and should be able to fight on it. November 7th, moving up to 2 - 0!

MMA, Muay Thai, No Gi, Open Mat

MMA

For MMA we started off with warm up quarter mile sprints.

Lap 1: 2:00, 30 seconds rest for a warm up
Lap 2: 1:30, 30 seconds rest
Lap 3: 1:30, 30 seconds rest
Lap 4: 1:35, 25 seconds rest
Lap 5: 1:40, 20 seconds Rest
Lap 6: 1:45, 15 seconds rest
Lap 7: 1:45

After that we did a minute of shooting a takedown and a minute of having the takedown shot on you. First was the double leg with the lift, then the double leg with the opponents sprawling and reshooting the double leg, then it was having a double leg shot on you, sprawling and then counter shooting a double leg and lifting. We then worked the outside trip and the knee tap, followed by single legs, working running the pipe, tree topping, and repenetrating for the double leg. We then worked a switch off of someone getting in on you with a single leg.

Muay Thai

For Muay Thai it was the same as Tuesday and Thursday. We have guys fighting next Saturday so we were going over the basics on the pads.

No Gi

No Gi focused on being on the bottom with half guard. We worked the old school sweep, and how to get the back if they base out to prevent it. We then worked a triangle from the bottom in half guard, I liked it a lot because the guy on top feels pretty confident about their position until the last second when you bring the leg up and over. After that we worked the Brabo top from on top being in Half Guard. We ended with situational rolling starting from Half Guard. I have been doing really well from Half Guard, especially if I make the person on top really spread out.

Open Mat

I rolled with coach for 30 minutes at Open Mat because everyone else was partnered and seemed to be avoiding him, I guess because he was a bit grumpy. I started in his Half Guard everytime and managed to get to side control briefly a couple times, mostly of scrambles after getting put in Deep Half Guard. I was able to some good arm bar attempts in on him, one I managed to transition into a Triangle from the back. He said he was actually having to work pretty hard to defend them all so that was good. I locked in a Brabo at one point off a scramble but his arm was up and not across his neck so I used it to come around to side control. I also swept him once from him being in my Side control, coming up on top in his Butterfly Guard. Good roll all together.

Still waiting to find out about fighting on November 7th. I told coach I would be willing to fight at 185 or 205 since I am at 195 right now. If I am going to fight at 205 I will just lift a little heavier between now and then and probably be able to put on 10 pounds or so between now and then.

I will most likely fight for Operation Octagon, that or Battle FC, that is usually who we fight out for.

Open Mat

I warmed up with 10 minutes of jump rope, followed by 10 pullups followed by Benching 135 x 10 for 5 sets. After that we did some sparring. We did 15 three minute rounds. My hands are catching up to my kicks so that is reassuring. My defenses are much better too, thus making my counters more effective. Really worked on the lead uppercut from a decent distance away today. My lead hook outside of clinch range is getting even better too, especially if I can get my opponent circling in to it. I have also been working on push kicks to my opponents thigh when they go to kick, I find it much more disrupting for them than just kicking and it off balances them quite a bit. I did 3 rounds of sparring with coach and it was easily the best I have done against him. I didn't really eat any punches that were too solid, usually I catch a couple at least. I was doing well at feinting and changing levels and working the body with the cross and lead hook.

After Sparring we did some rolling. I rolled with coach for about 30 minutes again. I hit a really good sitout from being turtled with him behind me. Worked a kimura in from being on top in his deep half guard again. I also went for a couple triangles from the back as he would go out back door from there. Tried a Brabo on him but couldn't get his arm across his neck deep enough so I used it to improve from half guard to side control, just in time to get swept. I feel much less feeble against him know so that has to mean I am imrpoving. After that I rolled for about 20 minutes with one of our Blue Belts, his go to is the triangle. He got me in one about a minute in, I wasn't too happy since I hadn't really been paying attention. After that I kind got my act together and managed to work to side control, to knee on belly, to mount where he gave his back and I got the body triangle on him with his arm stuck. I was working for the RNC but he pulled out back door but I spun back on top in mount and locked the mounted triangle. After resetting I managed to straight arm bar him from inside his guard. He reached under for the under hook and I came under his arm with the same side arm and brought my other arm over for leverage and got it straightened out. I later got him with a D'arce from half guard too. I weight 187 after rolling and since it looks like I will be fighting at 185 I am right on where I need to be, although I probably could gain a few more and it wouldn't hurt.

They are actually playing this song on the local radio, I was pretty surprised. All though I have heard them play Hysteria a few times. That song makes me want to run through walls at full speed, it is glorious.
