About 2 years. if I knew what I know now, in terms of dieting, it would have taken much less time.

So much hey bro. I learned that I never knew anything. Iv'e spent so much time online this year just reasearching dieting and nutrition.
If I had to list everything i have learned it would take up a few pages and the rest of my day, so not too keen to do that lol. But if you have any specific questions, i would be happy to answer them.

key to abs
1) diet

Did you use any heavy, weighted exercises or just body weight?

I use a mix of both. I train abs every alternate workout (every second workout).
I do about 50 reps weighted and 50 reps just using body weight.
Weighted reps help build your abs and make them stick out.. if that is what you want. I like my abs to stick out a bit.

I was just curious because my upper ab region already sticks out (under some fat). I just don't want to end up with like power lifter's abs when I shed the rest of the fat. I want a flat stomach, with rippling abs of course.

if you prefer the flat look, rather just hit body weighted reps. it will improve your shape and definition. but remember you will only ever see them when the layer of fat is gone = dieting

Oh yeah, I definitely know that. I've been cutting since Jan. 12, 2009. There's been a few bumps in the road but I'm slowly getting there. How strict was your diet? Did you follow the "calories in vs. calories out" mentality or did you have a more linear diet that you followed?

It really is amazing just how fast you can drop the fat if your diet is perfect. I was eating quite healthy but not getting results, mostly due to snacking on peanuts, having sauces on sandwiches and wraps, and actually eating too few carbs to give me energy for the gym. Once i fixed all that, the fat flew off. just depends how bad you want them i guess

4 months, but I didn't quite know what I was doing last time. I'm cutting all over again and I think I'll manage the same in 3 months this time.
By the way, OP, we have similar stats and judging by your avy, it shouldn't take you long at all on some moderate deficit.

Nothing gets you abs faster than dat der cell tek
Your not to far off OP. Get your diet dialed in first , abs are made in the kitchen not in the gym , and then get a solid wrokout routine.
That being said I do 3 sets of weighted ab crunches after every workout

Consider your level of bloat as well. If I go 4 days without salt, sugar or artifical sweetener, my 6pack gets much more ripped.

It took me a while to get some abs to show and get a ripped look to them but the best peice of advice was:
Don't say I wish I had a six pack
Say: I will have a six pack
You will get there if you want it.

I can tell you it can take six months with a strict diet. And when I say strict thats very few carbs, limiting yourself to yams, oats, brown rice and very little fruit except maybe right after a workout. Little to no Alcohol, no dairy, no bread, no pasta...I think you get it. Then adding in interval cardio such as sprints. Running on an empty stomach first thing in the morning also burns more fat than doing cardio any other time of the day. If you're consistent with your diet/cardio your six pack will come through. It's the carbs that'll hide it!

Yeah bro I'm concentrating more on arms and shoulders, abs taking a backseat for now but are still visible. Let me know if you need any help with something.

this is my goal, to get my body fat down from 18% to single digits to see abs, but I am not sure how many calories I really should be consuming, as I do not want to undereat. I'm 6'4, 227, 18.1%.
When you say, limit your carbs? How much are you limiting them? I just need some nutritional guidelines to keep my diet on track.
Thanks
