I absolutely agree
This was my first year competing as well. Luckily I had been warned before I decided to compete to make sure I was mentally prepared for the after competition gain. Even though I knew it was coming, it was very hard to take. I started immediately training for a marathon with my husband. Because of the marathon running I switched to a high carb diet and blew up like a balloon. I have since relaxed into my new/old size. I am enjoying eating fruit and bread. I too am trying desperately to gain muscle. If I choose to compete next year I will be certain to count the cost of mental anguish.
As you stated the most rewarding aspect of the journey is that you learn to love yourself in any skin. After all that self love and attention it balances you out to swing back to normal fat... and you are just as valuable as a person at 15% or 20% bodyfat as you are at 5 and 6%.. Of course it always helps me that my husband likes the little giggle that comes along with being a girl. As I get more depressed he gets happier and that too balances me out.
