headaches when lifting??

i have a question for all you other trainers out there, i recently took a week and a half off from the gym while i was on vacation. on my first day back, my head started pounding half way through my first set. it got to the point where i could not continue because my head felt like it was going to explode. i called it a day and figured i'd try again tomorrow. the following day the same thing happened. its been a week and i am still getting headaches when lifting. i'm fine all day until i hit the weights. has anyone ever experienced anything like this? i've been lifting for years and never had any issues when taking time off and getting back into it. any of your clients ever mention anything about headaches? i'm out of ideas as to what it can be. any suggestions or ideas??

I usually don't peddle bro science but every time I got headaches like you mentioned, I got sick shortly thereafter. You may be pre-viral so make sure you keep your immune system strong by eating healthy, taking your vitamins, and say your prayers brother!

it doesnt sound like it has to do with the weights itself persay. Have you been taking anything different than usual. I know i've had similar problems in the past. Usually my problem is not enough water, a new supplement, even too much sun that day has made me feel not so hot at the gym. So i would say take a look at anything different in your lifestyle and go from there.

Make sure your drinking enough water or liquids during the day and while exercising. Being dehydrated will make you have a headache and feel drained. Also make sure your breathing properly while lifting.

Hydration is key.

Did you recently change your supplements? Ginko is known to give bodybuilders headaches. Sometimes multi-vitamins can throw that stuff in there and you'll get headaches and not know why...

I'm not trainer but I would have said proper breathing as well. I watch my friends' heads explode when they are lifting lol.

thanks for all the feedback guys.. i do take a multivitamin which i didn't take on my week on vacation because i forgot them, but i did take them before vacation and never had a problem. i did feel a bit dehydrated a bit on vacation being in the florida sun, but once i got back i did get back to my normal water intake so that could be the issue. i'm taking two days off due to work schedule so hopefully i will be all set. nothing like a pounding headache when your all pumped to lift, kinda pisses me off.

I think it might be related to this even though your not having sex, but the physiology is the same during heavy lifting.

There all lots of factors contibuting to headaches....supplements, heat exhaustion, dehydration, overtraining, if head is down while you are exerting weight(like bent over rows, dedlifts, etc. that can put added stress on head/spine), possible pinched nerve. Just be sure to do warm up sets and keep hydrated throughout workout as well.
Most importantly as you know please contact your physician if it does persist. Could be a number of things. Rest sounds mandatory for now. Maybe good time to make appt. with dr. and get things checked out. Good luck and hope you are better. Keep us updated

I had the exact same problem. It was tension headaches caused by pressure on my brain. Check your blood pressure. If you are taking a Nitric Oxide lower the dosage or discontinue use. But check your blood pressure when you start getting a headache.

Sure do

I get them once in a while. It can be brutal and sometimes I have to quit too but I tend to push through as much as possible or I just lighten up the workout. I haven't figured out the cause but about 70% of headaches are caused by dehydration. I couple that with the breathing as it only happens when I lift really heavy and I know sometimes I hold my breath while pushing through a tough set.

Exactly what I was going to say! Make sure you are drinking enough water. I was alos going to ask you if you hold your breath when lifting? Also, have you changed your supplements? All these are factors with headaches. The only thing that kind of has me puzzled is that you say, you have been lifting for years and have never had this problem. Where are the headaches at? i.e. - behind your eyes, back of head, top of head, at temples?

I didnt change my supps, but i've been taking NO Explode (keep it at 1 scoop) and multivitamins as with protein powder. it feels as if the headaches are at the back of my head right above my neck.. kinda favoring the right side (making it behind the ear i guess?) its been extremely humid here in NJ the past week so i've recently increased my water intake thinking dehydration may play a part. although i do not have potent/gold urine as i know this is typically a sign for dehydration

Mark my words: NOXplode is soon going the way of Hydroxycut, the sh|t is too reliant on stimulants and someone's gonna have a stroke.

Yes it does give you increased workout intensity and strength, but long term it is a complete waste IMHO. It's the #2 highest selling supp on this site so hopefully I don't get banned for bashing it

Caffeine's a helluva drug

Yes it does give you increased workout intensity and strength, but long term it is a complete waste IMHO. It's the #2 highest selling supp on this site so hopefully I don't get banned for bashing it

Caffeine's a helluva drug
yea i'm cutting it out and see if that helps. i was talking to another person at work and they claim they've been getting headaches this week too. anyone from NJ knows how nasty its been with the heatwave and humidity, so this may have something to do with it. especially since my gym has the worst circulation and its such stagnant nasty air.

you i just did some "googling" and found alot of information. seems like alot of people get these. i'm gonna be on vacation again next week so when i come home i'm gonna be back in the gym and progress back up slowly with proper warmup and see if taking some time off to get some R+R helped. if they continue then its definately time for a trip to my doctor.
