LA fitness personal trainers
Not sure if its just the LA fitness I go to but a lot of the trainers are a total joke. I see kids that graduated HS last year and never even touched a weight training people. I see them telling someone to do something and the person is unbalanced and terrible form and the trainer says nothing and doesn't try to correct them. Its ridiculous...

Hate to tell you, but that's pretty much standard with 90% of commercial gym trainers
Also check out 24hr, Bally's, Gold's, and all the rest of them

Yeah man, I saw trainers at workout world (WOW) that were awful. One personal trainer actually told an old friend of mine not to bench press, but do push ups on a stability ball. This was after my friend told him he was on a beginner powerlifting routine...

When the gym first opened it was fine. All the trainers were big dudes that knew what they were talking about. I guess they found out commercial wasn't cutting it for them..

REAL Trainers
The reason most people suck out there as trainers at commercial places like those are because of how easy it has become to obtain a certification. All you do is pay some money, take an unchecked "open book" test online, and it's done. Many of the trainers you see at these places are people who did that, and are just looking to have a well paying job as opposed to a career.
It could be worse. Other chain places, such as Fitness Together, don't even require their trainers to have that simple certification. Literally any bum off the street who is in fairly good shape can work there. Then again, they require you to pick exercises off a check sheet and follow their protocol exactly, so I guess having outside knowledge won't help, anyways.
The majority of actual good trainers are out on their own. They either have their own studios, travel around to businesses to work with the workers in corporate gyms, or travel to their clients houses for training.
Essentially, commercial gyms are places where you are going to find the new commers to the business, trying to make a name for themselves, or a quick buck.

I somewhat agree with you
Most gyms are requiring their trainers to be NASM certified now i believe. I don't think NASM offers an online open book test. The reason why the trainers suck is because they don't have the passion or desire to help people. They just do it because it's a job, where they can collect a paycheck for sitting around.

Some of the personal trainers I have seen are a joke. I don't think you need to be huge to be a trainer, but at least look like you have worked out before. The salesman at the LA I go to are in better shape than the trainers.

Hey, I work at LA Fitness, and I have a CSCS with a BS in Kinesiology, and I research everyday new ways to train for myself and clients. I don't suck!
But yeah, I know what you mean...A lot of times clients tell me that the other trainers suck, and don't tell them the key pointers I give them. And yes, I do see salesmen who are better shape than the trainers a lot of times, lol.

Theres always an exception to the rule lol. I'm pretty sure you're not only good trainer at LA Fitness, but I bet you know first hand how bad some of them can be.

LA Fitness wouldn't even hire me with my certification. Apparently they have a preapproved list of certifications and since mine is a local one that just started, it's not on there. I see these jokers in there "training" people and I just wonder what cert they have...i don't get it.

Haha which trainer was this?
Come lift down the street RT 1 south at Golds in Lawrenceville, NJ. We're very powerlifting/body builder/athelete friendly and we have a pretty good training staff.

It's not the cert
Any Joe Schmo can pass a personal training exam and become certified. SCARY

I work at LA Fitness and I don't consider myself to be an idiot. I have CanFit Pro certification and about a decade of practical experience. I am still learning and am working there mainly for certified experience in order to work at a more credible studio in the near future. There are about 9 trainers at my gym and of the 9, I would recommend maybe 2. I see a lot of what the other trainers are doing and sometimes I have to shake my head. That's pretty much all I'm going to say because I believe that every trainer has his/her own training styles and theories. I will tell you, however, that I once saw one of my fellow trainers have a 70 year old man doing a clean and jerk...this guy was so frail and thin...it's the closest I've ever come to giving a coworker **** about a prescribed exercise. I have heard that a lot of the commercial gyms have incompetent trainers and in my opinion, it's a huge shame, especially considering what the gyms are charging per session.

Do gyms not have PTs specialize in demographics? Older women, athletes, young men, old men, and goals like losing weight, gaining muscle, building endurance etc?
It seems this would make the process much more efficient and helpful rather than having some trainer telling a powerlifter to do pushups.
I'm asking because I don't know, If I'm wrong, how so?

Haha exctally i see this all the time as well and also personal trainers who look them selfs like they have never touched a weight (im literally talking about little beer gut and toothpic arms) and they then train some people giving them advice, getting them to do things that are absoultly stupid and pointless.
This will get you certified, and alot of gyms accecpt this:

- Team building.
- Having fun
- Massages at the beach
- Modeling as a fireman
- Group exercise session
- Group human pyramid
- Group fitness day
- 80's dress up day.
- Graduation
And im not joking.

Seriously this is why alot of PT's who work in gyms actually have no idea at all what they are on about.

Im currently studying with ISSA my self to become a PT and this one particular gym in New Zealand does not accecpt it, yet they accecpt the course above. lol?

I believe that a lot of it comes down to health and safety (here in the UK anyway). In my gym we are not allowed to demonstrate any free weights techniques to new members on induction, and have to stick to machines. Some of the larger companies have protocol which instructors have to follow, which can limit what we can do in alotted time.
As for certification, I believe any serious fitness professional should seek to follow the Kaizen principle of constant and never ending improvement... Keep climbing the career ladder. Of course there are always members with more experience, but they can be learned from too. The fitness instructor shouldn't have to be the most experienced, most knowledgeable or the fittest in the gym.
I am qualified to Level 2, and have my exam for Level 3 in a few weeks. I am studying for a BSc in Sports Science (2 years remaining). I train people with MSc in Sports Science, doctorates, and with 20 years experience; my enthusiasm, encouragement, communication / instructional skills help them just as much as my knowledge would. I always endeavour to learn from these people, and pass the information on to other members.
My point is that instructors should be well rounded individuals (not physically though, as this would portray the wrong image!) who can offer every member what they need, whether it be new exercises, motivation, a spot, an entire programme or just a point of reference.

I am currently using a trainer at LA and I would agree that most of them do not know what they are doing and usually provide BS answers. Its also really not worth the $ when you look at how long you are actually "working out" with them. I think its much better to spend the time doing your own thing. I occasionaly ask them for new ideas. I mainly like having a trainer because I know it pushes me to work harder. I think if I had a gym partner, I would do better.

its because real trainers can't make enough money in a commercial gym....after everyone gets their cut, you get nothing. thats why I train Privately and only as a side job..... but the trainers at LA are a total joke, among most other gyms. the other day I saw the jackass having a fat lady who never worked out before, doing skull crushers with a bench, pushed between two cable machines.... has this guy never heard , KEEP IT SIMPLE STUPID, especially for a newbie.

Any schmuck with a certification willing and able to hard sell supplements will be training at the Globo Gyms. Again, it's not about proper training/nutrition and the client's goals, it's about quotas on snake oil. Pump people up about getting "great results" and hard sell them supplements. They are just like the fitness magazines, the pictures and silly routines for huge gunz are to sell supps.
I know one manager who, after getting a commitment for training, will then refuse to do the contract unless the client agrees to buy supps. Why he closes anyone is a mystery to me; I can only think of punching him in the face each time I have to talk with him.

There would not be many PTs out there if people weren't so lazy to figure **** out on their own. Can't really blame the trainers at these gyms for taking advantage of that.

Most the trainers I have seen at "globo gyms" are no good for people with NO experience. much less some experience. they can't even take care of themselves.
