Misc Book Club (Serious)
The misc as a whole has a large amount of people who want more from life. In addition to that, I've often heard sayings such as the person you are 5 years from now will be a direct result of the people you hang around and the books you have read.
Undoubtedly, books offer us all an opportunity to experience things otherwise nearly impossible (for example, finding meaning in Auschwitz, see Viktor Frankl), learn from the wisest people, and improve our lives on our own accord. With that said, it's high time we start a misc book club with the aim to improve the person we will become.
Essentially, this club will help the people who want to better themselves associate with like-minded people, engage in some meaningful discussion, and broaden our horizons.
Some topics for books I've considered are philosophy (old and new), personal development, leadership, personal finances/economics, biographies, history, and really anything else people want to learn more about.
If you have good ideas to contribute to this new group, reps will surely be coming your way! Also, if you have a recommendation for the first book, do share.
Mod Edit: We are currently reading 'Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance' by Robert M. Pirsig. You are welcome to join us.

Book #1 is underway!
"Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" by Robert M. Pirsig -- concludes on September 21
"Like those in the valley behind us, most people stand in sight of the spiritual mountains all their lives and never enter them, being content to listen to others who have been there and thus avoid the hardships."

Just got done reading Lou Dobbs "Exporting America" today. Not bad if you're a right wing. A little redundant though.
I've also read his "War on the Middle Class", pretty decent. I have his another of his "Independents Day", getting read this week.

I read.
Finishing the 3rd book in Dean Koontz's Frankenstein series. (read each in 1 week)
Also reading All the Pretty Horses.
I tend to read 2-3 books at a time, finishing most in a month or less. (serious)
I think that it's good to read fiction and non fiction.
Both give interesting insights.

Liked reading neitzsche more than kant, although both were a long time ago. While neither was thrilling, IMO, Kant was just so dry it was an effort to finish.

sun tzu's - The art of warfare.
There's nothing wrong with western literature. I'm currently reading it for the second time (read it back in highschool), and its a whole different realm of intellect. Hard to put into words, but its definitely going to be a paradigm shift for anyone not familiar with eastern philosophy.

Really enjoyed this one as well, but on a personal level I got more out of Book of Five Rings by Musashi. That is a book that I have read over and over for at least 20 years.
Decent thread with a few links to previous book discussions and other links:

Good feedback so far.
Be sure to take the poll and then once we decide the category then we can vote between a few books.
After we do one book from a certain topic, we'll move on to another topic.
And if you vote Other, be sure to say which "Other" topic you want, otherwise we can't realistically go with your idea.
