Lunges...
Just an observation, but I've seen several training splits on here and most of them don't incorporate lunges on leg day. Any particular reason? I always thought lunges were right up there with squats but I could be wrong. My gym doesn't have a leg extension machine so I guess I'm just trying to substitute.

I don't know but I love them. I used to do both on leg days, then when I went to a 3 day split, I would do squats on one leg day and do walking lunges on the next leg day.

lunges are a great exercise to incorporate into a leg routine - and they're very versatile - reverse, traveling, split leg, side - you can do a lot just with this one exercise. They'll get the job done

I love doing them - they're very challenging, but they seem to carry with them a pretty substantial risk of injury. Last week I 'bout blew out a kneecap pulling them off, lulz.
Anyhooz, I usually do incorporate them into leg day (or I did . . . I may be sticking them on the back burner for a little while after they turned on me, lol), and they always kick my ass. Literally. =D

That's the main reason why I stopped doing them, was because last time I did them I felt a twinge and pulled something. I probably just wasn't paying attention enough, and was not doing the proper motion. So you're right the risk for injury is high if you don't do them properly.
With all that said, I really think I should start to do lunges again. Thread is inspiring me .

I do mine in front of the mirror at the gym so I can watch my form. They're easy to mess up if you don't do em right, but SO worth what they do to your legs!
Just like anything else, you gotta make sure you get form down before you add weight. Otherwise you're increasing your chance at injury and not even working the proper muscle in the first place!

Lunges are great providing you focus on getting sufficient TUT and not using momentum. I'm particularly partial to alternating reverse lunges

I'll do very high rep sets of walking lunges for a bit of endurance, & jumping scissor lunge jumps for power/speed. The only lunge I'll weight is a Bulgarian split squat and that's just to increase knee stability.
I just don't feel that weighted lunges are that effcient of a lift.
