Having trouble breaking a 9 minute mile
Just like the title says, can't break at 9 minute mile. Best time right now is 9:39. I just got back into running after about a 2 month lay over. Anyone have any suggestions? I am doing this on a treadmill, I have trouble pacing myself on a track.
Thanks

HIIT training and distance running e.g. 3 - 5 miles at a slower pace. Build endurance and you'll break it eventually.

Run longer distances.

In HS we had to run a 6 min mile for football. I did it in 6:10.

There's someone on here who runs a 3 minute mile. You should ask him for advice.

id use fartlek training principles. try running 2 miles and alternate a slow jog for 1 minute with a full sprint for 30 seconds. your body will get used to the stress of a sprint and help you break out of your comfort zone that keeps you at a 9 min mile. as time goes on increase the sprint times and decrease the jog times.

Can't get under 9 minutes? I'd take up biking or swimming. Running might not be your thing.

9 minute mile is pretty bad
your form has to blow and you can't be pushing yourself

-dont try and run on a treadmill. if you cant pace yourself (and wtf is this possible? do you just randomly speed up and slow down a ton?) then run more until you learn how

Running longer distances will not improve speed for shorter runs.
HIIT as suggested above will help, it will help increase your vo2 max and able you to perform better. Short sprints will help.
Is your problem with running a timed mile you run out of oxygen, or run out of energy?

try losing some weight if you're not already. 9 minutes should not be hard for any healthy person to do.
Also like others have mentioned mix it up. Get on a track and sprint the straights as fast as you can can and walk/slow jog the curves for 4 laps. Next time spring 200 yards and walk 100. After that run 300 yards as fast as you can then walk to last 100.
This will help you increase your running speed and you'll always have a short break to look forward to so you dont feel like a failure by quitting halfway through your mile.

and for the people saying do interval or fartlek training...that is for once you are in good shape. i know its hard running at 240lb, but i can do distance runs at a 9 min pace. OP should be worrying about getting 5 miles in 45 min before seeing how fast he can run 1

first off get off the treadmill. Running on the road is harder to do and you will benefit more from it. The most important thing this will do is force you to learn how to pace yourself. Then you can start pushing yourself at a faster pace slowly and next thing you know you will be well below a 9 min mile

I've never had a problem and i'm currently weighing in at 240. My best time for 1.5 miles is 9:35 on a treadmill and i consider that to be fairly pitiful.
