Farming or any other type of agricultural industry would be dangerous and completely inappropriate for at least 200 years. It will be at least two centuries before there is any chance the situation can change within the 1.5-mile Exclusion Zone. As for the #4 reactor where the meltdown occurred, we estimate it will be 20,000 years before the real estate will be fully safe.

The Red Forest
The name 'Red Forest' comes from the ginger-brown colour of the pine trees after they died following the absorption of high levels of radiation from the Chernobyl accident on April 26, 1986.
In the post-disaster cleanup operations, the Red Forest was bulldozed and buried in 'waste graveyards. The site of the Red Forest remains one of the most contaminated areas in the world today
Red forest was named so because in a few days after the disaster this area of pine forest turned into ?red? color, than into dead-wood?and now it doesn?t exist at all - young pine growth at this place. ?Red? forest was buried underground.
Burial of radioactive trees occurred in deep trenches ? 0,5?2 meters deep. This is at the level of local groundwater.
This has led to the contamination of groundwater by the accidental release of radioactive substances. According to scientists, already 2?3 years after burial, the existence of radionuclides was noted in the groundwater near the trenches where dead trees were buried.
Currently, the burial place of the dead forest is a source of radioactive substances in the groundwater, which qualifies as long-term contamination.
Because of the negative environmental impact of such an event, as well as the complexity of its removal (minimize), one can conclude that the burial of the dead trees was not a good plan, but only deepened the environmental problems.

The reason is because below the reactor all the nuclear fuel is still there. The structure and the cement over it is containing the material. If that **** broke off again it would be 1986 all over again.
material would go into the air

One of my professors was a nuclear engineer... he said Chernobyl was built to generate power, but also to make nuclear grade plutonium, it was a pretty unstable system.
He also said that if you look at all the facts, the people controlling the disaster KNEW it was going to happen... there's records of what the controllers did, and even a low-level grunt would know that the steps they were taking would lead to meltdown. He said he didn't know if it was a experiment or what, but it just shows how the Soviets didn't give a **** about peoples lives.

I was told by one of my science teachers that when **** started getting real, the two workers that died were putting sand bags on the reactor untill they died.

Even if there was such video made, it would have been destroyed by the radiation.

Damn son, you had a former intelligence officer specializing on analyzing data slash nuclear engineer with access to top secret data as a professor?. Russo phobia at its finest.

I find it hard to believe they had no idea of the dangers. They can split the atom, harness it's power but they dont know the dangers of fallout? Seems like they just where kept in the dark by the morally deficient USSR brass.
