Tired of females saying Weights make you bulky!
I log my food on a website and like to just search the threads- Just to be nosey- These women just want people to hold there hand and console them for the cupcakes they eat- All they do is talk about food.
But then when they gain weight its all about how it must be muscle after 2 weeks
Or How they don't want to lift weights because they don't want to get bigger one lady even admitted to having more testosterone-
Whats your biggest complaint with women and weight loss and the gym/weight training

I hear you girl!!!
My biggest complaint is the women that do go to the gym and get on the elliptical and go at the lowest possible setting with no resistance for about 20min-never breaking a sweat-gossiping with their bestie who is on the machine next to them or worse talking on the phone...ugghhh..and they wonder why they cant lose weight!!
Another one is the women who wear skimpy little outfits but you can tell they are very self- conscious and are constantly pulling their shortie shorts down, or readjusting their tops..Why do you wear that if you are not comfortable in it?
I wish there were more girls like you at my gym! I have to get on here to see my motivation- some real women with muscle!

I do wish there were more women in the weight room, and if anyone asked me, I'd encourage them.... but at least it means more room for me in there

I had a co worker try to tell me that i sholdn't add on weights yet, i should just stick to cardio. Meanwhile i'm thinking, um i did that 3 MONTHS AGO! i'm at the point ( i know it's not fantastic, but not begginer level) to where I can do a good 2 miles running/ jogging on the treadmil. Besides, the cottage cheese on my hams sure seems to appreciate squatting and deadlifts....jus saying.
Or when i go to the gym and girl x has finished her low intensity cardio, and goes back to the weight room and picks up a five, does a few reps of about two excercises and leaves. Especially going to a college university i'm thinking, is it so hard to do a bit of research?

"I just want to get toned, I don't want to look like a man"
And the women that say "Oh, I used to be in soccer/gymnastics/whatever and I gain muscle REALLY easily, so I can't lift weight"
I just want to say - "NO, you don't. You're a female like the rest of us and you're not going to turn into jay cutler by breathing on a dumbbell rack. In fact, you're a long way off from "toned" or whatever you think you want. You're overweight and it's not b/c of "soccer thighs" it's b/c of FAT ... so eating taco bell and doing 20min of powerwalking will not solve your problem, so if you don't want my advice, stop asking for it."

A good friend of mine is about 200 lbs overweight. Recently she's been cleaning up her diet a bit and walking a couple of laps around the local high school track three or four times a week. So far, she's lost about 35 lbs, but she still has a long way to go.
She's been asking me lots of questions about my gym membership and amenities/classes that are offered, and she said, "Maybe when I've lost some more weight, I'll get a membership so I can meet you at the gym and do some toning."
Gah! The t-word again! I didn't say anything because I know that my friend knows next to nothing about diet and exercise. I've been giving her advice when she asks for it.
Maybe someday I can corrupt her with free weights.

Today at the gym I was trying to do some lat pulldowns at 35 kgs (I'm a total newbie at lifting weights :|) and my stepbrother says to me "Tina, don't put so much weight on it you're going to get bulky!". Then he tells me to go do low weights high reps instead. Ugh.
I'm trying to lose like 80 lbs, and I hear lifting weights will help tremendously with burning more fat if I put on some muscle. I've been going to the gym about 4/5 times a week for almost 2 months now but I've been doing a lot of cardio and almost no weight training and the weight loss is going pretty slow. Can you guys recommend me a beginner workout? I really am a total newbie when it comes to weightlifting. I thought about starting the "Sean 10mm's Stripped 5x5 " workout (can't post links yet), what do you guys think?

These precious women suffer from misinformation overload. They spread misinformation like wildfire. Heck I use to be one of them. Forever talking never changing. Junk food was my lover and I stuff my mouth and it exploded all over my body. I probably would have been in the 200+ club by now if it had not been for a health care crisis.
It made me take my time on this planet seriously. It made me take my life seriously. I had to learn to walk the walk and that is hard. I do understand the ladies who are changing their fitness program, every other week. buying every piece of fitness crap you see on an informercial, etc...it really does make you seem like you are trying to get somewhere. In fact you are busy but not productive. At the end of the year where are the results???
Each person has to reach their own level of I am not taking this anymore....I am just thankful that I became that bulky old female that I once feared
peace all become everything you were designed to become.

Ok... a couple of things... first, NO YOU WILL NOT GET BULKY! Lift and lift heavy! If I were you I would start with compound exercises and do a full body workout 3-4 days a week. I would stick to things like squats, lunges, deadlifts, pullups (or assisted pullups or lat pull downs), pushup variations, bench press variations, row variations, and military press. These exercises work more than one muscle group at a time so you should get the most bang for your buck by doing them (as opposed to things like bicep curls and tricep kickbacks that pretty much just hit one muscle at a time). I would do the full body thing for 6-8 weeks then switch it up to a lower body/upper body split or maybe push/pull/legs or some other split. If you're just starting, I would have you do slightly lighter weight and a few more reps until you get the proper form down. I hate seeing newbies come into the gym and slap on a ton of weight as it sets them up for increased risk of injury and it teaches them improper form from the beginning. Learn how to do the exercises correctly, then start increasing weight and lowering reps. So maybe start with 3-4 sets of 10-15 reps.
For cardio... my best advice on cardio is go hard or go home. For years I was a cardio queen and still didn't loose any weight. At one point I was staying on cardio machines until the machine said that i had burned 1000 calories. I wouldn't get off the machine until I had burned EXACTLY 1000 calories.... and still couldn't figure why i wasn't losing weight. Now I know i wasnt losing because i wasn't challenging myself. My body had become extremely efficiant at doing that cardio so it was nothing to hop on and crank out 2 hours on the elliptical. For your cardio, I recommend switching it up DAILY. If you do the ellipitcal one day, do the stair stepper the next... after that hop on the treadmill. If your only option for cardio is the treadmill then again just switch it up regularly by constantly adjusting your pace and incline. One day you could 20 minute intervals for speed, then next day to 25 minute intervals with incline (run at the same pace but alternate incline levels). Also, try to find cardio that you enjoy. You don't have to live in the gym to see results. Yes, most people do hit the gym for weights. However, for some days (the days you don't do weights) you could go for a hike, go swimming, take a bike ride, go for a jog, go roller blading... Find ways to make fitness a part of your life.
I hope this helps girl!
Cassie

I'm new to this forum and have to say that I agree with everything being said here. I've never feared weights so to speak but didn't exactly activley use them much either since it always seem to be dubbed as a guy thing. Many women and men think that you can gain muscle very easily when this just isn't so.
I was overweight for the better half of my life and although I lost a ton of weight, I was very weak for many years afterwards, and now that I have been including weights for a year or so, it has helped tremendously, not just for being stronger and looking better, but also for burning calories.
Also, in my own personal opinion, I find many women just want to be too skinny and some even strive to be underweight which just looks sickly to me. I'm all for weight loss and fitting into jeans but there's a point and somehow that line is blurred.

I have always been proud of my muscle and strength even as a young girl. I have the body type of my great grandmother who had natural muscle and I used to be able to beat the boys at arm wrestling in elemetery school (before they hit puberty and developed more muscle of course)! Anyhow, the girls used to always tell me to let the boys win or they would think I was a man! HA! Even girls at that young age feel that way so its only natural they carry it into adulthood. I am proud of my muscle. I wore a sleevless top today and my arms looked cut and veiny and I could feel the stares from women. Don't know if they thought it was cool or gross, but I could see it. I think men are more appreciative of a muscular woman than woman are. When I was doing my bodybuilding all of the men in my office would ask me how I was doing with it and were sincere about it. Women looked at me like I was a freak but were jealous over how much I could eat and not get fat. Hello!!!!!!!

I've lost count of the number of women who insist they have a thyroid problems and this is why they can't lose weight. Then there are the women who assume that I just look like this so it's easy for me. They seriously have no clue how hard I've had to bust my a$$ all these years...I don't even bother with a response.

Is this the one where you squat every other workout?
I've used rows and chin-ups in my routine before, and more and more I've begun to feel like they're getting in the way and in the end reducing my gains on the presses. I'll be able to tell for sure in the next couple weeks after not doing them for awhile.
I think probably Rip Is Right.
Workout A
Squat 3x5
Benchpress 3x5
Deadlift 1x5
Workout B
Squat 3x5
Standing Press 3x5
Cat Nap* 30 minutes
* Cat Nap can be replaced with Power Cleans 5x3 once you've really mastered the deadlift and you've researched them well enough that you won't hurt your back.
This Sean's program is definitely better than 98% of what you see around this forum though. The 5 sets instead of 3 will make up volume you lose for only doing the squat half the time for example. A bit over-fixated on arms instead of legs or the torso (they're the smallest limbs you have, so why do twice as many exercises that involve them?), but overall good. Results should happen with it.

I'm on my way to the gym now and I probably won't even see any other women there on a Saturday evening!
Oh yah, the 'cardio flab-masters,' just confound me. Haven't they figured out something's not working?
