Sadly Steve, I think most men mean "I want to look like a cvoer guy on Men's Fitness magazine". They have no clue how hard it is just getting to that point.

Whenever someone says that, you could also jack with them a bit...look them straight in the eye and say "you could NEVER get big, or as BIG as I am..... I DARE you to try!".
I really don't care what other people's goals are. But when I'm at the gym and it is obvious that guys DO want to get big and aren't that's when the "I'm working out to stay in shape" excuse they use sounds lame. Heck, just be honest with me that you're a hard gainer just like me and it's going to take YEARS to get big. If you're in the gym and you're hitting it hard you've already got my respect.
1) Most of the peopel that are on teh cover of mens health magazines are on some form of special supplementation and have trained all their life. Newbies dont understand that.
2) People often walk into a gym and say they want to look like a 100m track sprinter. Yes well - if you want to look like that then you need to be able to run the 100m in under 10seconds + you need to be able to squat, dead and bench as much as they do..plus you need to diet and train like they do. If you do all of that then you will look exactly like them. For some reason people dont understand this.
3) An untrained individual does not understand how much muscle they dont have on them. THey train for 3 weeks, feel like they grew alittle and then they think they are now 'massive'. The reality is at this point, from the 3rd person view, they still dont look like they have touched a weight in their life - which is 99% of the people in the gym anyway.
4) They dont understand that you plateau and then the body becomes much more picky about what it responds too.
5) I ****en hate bone warrior homos walking about the gym with their shirt off and arms hanging out. They talka bout their 6 pac that looks like its made from a single muscle fibre. Personally i think they should get out of the gym and go back to somalia.
6) People will often change their tranining goals because they are unable to reach them. Someone might say 'i want to hit 220 pounds then ill cut back'. They train for a year realise they arnt getting any bigger and then change their goals and say 'i was getting too fat so i decided to cut'. The reality of this one is that, they were unable to reach their intital goal so they decided to change it to try do somethign that was more attainable.
I personally want to get as large as my genetics will allow!
Absolutely...show me a man who when he realises that he is gaining mass in the gym who doesn't want to take it to his full potential, and I'll show you a liar...my brothers wife recently said she didn't want him 'muscly' after starting to train 1 day a week with me. - He said ' F**K that...show me the muscles baby!'
Most of the guys at the gym live by this, "I don't want to get big just stay in shape!" and they are dead serious about this. There are maybe five to seven true bodybuilders on the floor when I'm there and that's 7 people out of 50 or more! Pitiful! There is no f*#king way that I would waste my time in a gym that was set up exclusively for bodybuilding! I can get in shape by running around the block.

IMHO this is semantics. The fact is that they use weights to sustain muscle. We could go on ad nauseum debating what makes a bodybuilder, or what in fact makes a 'weight trainer' - would be worth having a new thread on. I'll start one. Lets see the results.

Depends on the shape you are looking to get into, running around the block will let you get skinny, but that is a long, long way from what many of us are shooting for. Yet, at the other end of the scale a stage ready body may also not be the goal.
I have a great deal of respect for those that get on stage and compete. I also have a great deal of respect for those who "run around the block" to stay in shape. To me the idiots are those who think anything other then their goal is a waste of time!
Get over yourself!!!

Sometimes its hard to set new goals. I started working out for general health (weight loss), and just earlier this month hit my initial goal. I realize that i still need to lose at least 2 more kg. past the initial goal, and that I'm not pleased with my upper body appearance, but how to set a goal to that? When its just weight loss, you can easily say, "I will be less than 175 lb.". Now that I'm there, I need some new, specific goals. I know what to do to kill off the remaining 2 kg., and will get there fairly soon, but after that?

"Get over yourself"!? LMAO "...running around the block will let you get skinny..."
Hm? Maybe that's why I'm so skinny! LOL I'm not in the least knocking "getting and staying in shape" if that's your goal and people have set there goals and limits. It is the limits, the restraints that these people put upon themselves never realizing their full potential.
How many times have you heard this at the gym and thought, yeah right? I've heard this from a few guys at my gym.

A little food for thought:
1.There is a point where you stop looking good in dress clothes and begin to look like you are almost fat because most clothes are not designed for body building physiques.
2. There is also a point where your thighs are big and you have to buy large waisted pants to compensate for your legs and a big ass.
2a. inner thighs rubbing and holes where they rub
3. depending on your height( under 6 ft.), you can begin to appear short and squat.
4. breathing can be more difficult carrying around extra weight and normal activities are harder.
5. airplane seats and normal chairs are not wide enough and a bit uncomfortable.
go for it but be prepared for a few of these things.

just an occasional reader/poster here...
there are a lot of people who think they know everyone in the world and their motivations, but they don't. I lift weights for one reason only, to be as thin as I can possibly be. there simply isn't a way that I can lower my calories past a certain point without losing all of my muscle.... it's either 1) eat a single carrot stick and can of tuna a day, no lifting, and be incredibly, unhealthily skinny (with a relatively high BF % anyway), or 2) lift and minimize body fat while keeping a more normal/healthy metabolism and state of nutrition. I cannot have low body fat without lifting, period, and I truly "do not want to get big".
I realize how hard it is to get huge. it's also hard to climb Mount Everest, and I truly do not want to do that either! I have OTHER challenges that I give myself.
someone is not necessarily a liar or a fool if you don't understand them, they may just be someone you don't understand.
peace,
David
