Well with dead lifting I can tell you a lot of mistakes I have seen the few people doing them at one of my gyms make:
1.) They do not touch th ground, at all, and are not doing a Romanian or a Stiff Legged, they THINK they are doing Olympic Dead Lifts. Be sure to touch the ground, do not bounce the weights, allow the weight to go "dead", and lift again.
2.) They lift with their toes, which will land you real fast in the ER with a thrown back! Drive those heels down!!!
3.) Control your breathing, I get a good deep breath into the diaphram and lift, release upon descent, and repeat.
4.) They wear sneakers. Too buoyant! Go in socks, man, I swear by this every single time I dead lift!
5.) They go too heavy too fast. Make steady progress, this is better than poor form progress now and NO PROGRESS later. Just stay consistent.
Have fun man but be sure to really hammer down that form, with a movement such as dead lifts, the form is literally going to make or break your results!!!

thanks much for the helpful tips,
one last thing, does it really take away much from wearing gloves? I've been wearing them cause I'm a major sweater and helps keep my hands where I have a better grip free of sweat.

I stopped deadlifting for the past month after I started running epi. The insane lower back pump I got from it is too crazy so I didn't want to further add to the pump by deadlifting. I think I will start again soon though. What are some good accessory exercises for deadlifts besides reverse hypers?
As for grip being sweaty, I have teh same problem. I used to use towels as I deadlift but ever since I got straps the problem is solved so i recommend them.

Unfortunately, chalk isnt allowed in so many gyms - I know mine doesnt. Lucky I dont sweat much, so simply use bare hands, no gloves or straps.

Squats, seriously. If you are squatting heavy it will keep your DL going up. Also, as far as more specific assistance, it depends where your current DL is at. The best accessory to the DL may just be to do DL's and worry about "weak points" later. It's when you get more advanced that it would be quicker and better to change your DL programming by adding in assistance. That said, RDL's, good mornings, rack deadlifts, and haltings are pretty good.
So, what's your DL at?

Hey Justin, what exactly is the benefit of not deadlifting in sneakers? I wear my basketball shoes when I lift because we're not allowed to take our shoes off + I don't have lifting shoes. Anyway, just curious. Am I more likely to injure myself with sneakers as opposed to just socks (or lifting shoes)? Or would I be able to do more weight for whatever reason (in socks/lifting shoes)?

Dead lifting in sneakers has been compared to trying to squat standing on a mattress, it is a bit boyant and absorbant (for lack of better terms). Going in socks enables you to drive your heels deep into the ground and get more control over the stance for the movement....
On saturday at the show (that ruined me for the next however long) we ALL dead lifted the axle in socks.

I second that as well. im always in the gym with socks only especially on lower body days. If u find yourself swaying a bit during squats or deads pull off your shoes and you will be amazed at how much more stable you are.

Not messy at all and doubles as a germ killer (if you care). Not nearly as good as chalk but far better than bare sweaty hands.

that one - I haven't used it till now but I've heard a few people say its good enough - as Nismo said above not nearly as good as chalk but it really helps if you're prone to having sweaty hands.

Bloody hell!!
I did 220lbs last night as my 1RM, I'm pretty sure I could do 240 - 250lbs though. It was the first time I'd tried doing my 1RM on the deadlift, don't think it's too bad.

Great thread. I just started the Rippetoe program for novice lifters this week. The book Starting Strength has 44 pages dedicated to the deadlift. I like the advice about no shoes, I think Rippetoe's shoe of choice for squat and deadlift are some old Chuck Taylor's.
One mistake I made yesterday was letting my back round on the way down. I had a brain fart and didn't let the bar slide down my thighs. I tweaked my lower back on the right side a little bit and it's kind of annoying, but I will be back at it Friday.
