I had a BAC level of .411 and was able to walk and hold a conversation and the doctor was surprised i was alert and not in a coma. the following day i got out and quit cold turkey and its been almost 9 months sober now. and hitting rock bottom was the best and worst thing for me to get me sober finally after a few tries at stopping. and i scared a lot of people including my friends, family, and finally myself.

Congrats to you for quitting and getting a hold of yourself. It's got to be one of the most difficult things you can do. Hang in there and keep up the good work.
I can relate to a lot of the posters in this thread. For about 10 years, I used to binge between 3-4 times a week and could put away a very large quantity of alcohol. I'd say I was a problem drinker, but luckily enough for me it was more of a deeply entrenched habit rather than a true addiction. I didn't quit cold turkey, but was able to gradually reduce my intake significantly. It wasn't easy though. Now I only have maximum one drink a day (not even every day) and maybe once a month, I'll get just a slight buzz.
In August 2007, I had a child on the way and I was 268 lbs and unhappy with myself. I finally got my act together, cut down on the booze and dieted properly. Almost 2 years later, I'm at ~215lbs with abs coming in very nicely. My lifts have never been better. I'm a champ when I choose to do cardio. No more headaches as I'm raring to go at 7 am and enjoy hanging out with my family and feeling great all day. Life without excess alcohol is VERY good.

I have gone thus far, about 1 and a half years so far with out touching any type of booze. Although, I was never a big drinker so Its not too hard I guess. I'm still proud of myself though.
Now I have to kick my pepsi addiction haha. I'm down to drinking only 1 bottle of diet pepsi per day. Whereas before I would drink something like 5-6 cans of regular pepsi per day.

I used to drink a 1.75 liter handle of gin a week, as well as a few beers thrown in there.
It was absolutely awful.
I now drink 1 night a week, and it's several beers, I don't get completely ****-faced, and I don't suck down cigarettes as I used to (I only smoke while drinking). Life is so much better, and my gains dont get compromised as much.

yah my drinking has cut down significantly since leaving college about 2 months ago. i used to drink days a week 10-20 beers per night. Now i only drink on saturday, and i limit myself to 7 beers. I only justify this because i add another hour of pure cardio on sunday, just to clean my system out and not get lazy on the weekends(i lift monday-friday). i think its ok to have a few beers as long as you make sure to add a workout in to burn off the extra calories/carbs.

So I used to be a pretty heavy drinker. This past quarter of school I was taking only one course and was working part time, with the rest of my day I would find whoever was down and start drinking. I'd say I was drinking a good 4 days a week pretty heavily.
I realized how that was starting to take hold on my performance in school and work and I started to look at my body and realize I needed to change. So starting on the first of July I started a no drinking promise. I've gone a few nights having a beer or two and another night where I completely fell off. I'm pretty content with how I've done so far though. Wednesday is my 22nd birthday though so wish me luck on holding back then
Just wanted to contribute something in here, I wish everyone luck!

I love beer
Beer doesnt love me. I use to drink alot, and never realized it was my biggest problem. If your serious about lifting and getting into shape, you got to decide which is more important. I chose to drink only on occasion. And even then I never go more than 3 beers.

Doh, fell off and had half a bottle of whiskey. On the plus side, I have a great distaste for whiskey for a while...
Ok, let's try the 14th-21st...

Got admit I'm still going strong...even had a few nights hanging out at the bars, etc.
Feeling pretty good about it, and please to see I'm in control. Still must admit I am looking forward to going on vacation and having a glass of wine.

Just thought I'd pop in to say...3 weeks without a drop of alcohol. I'm not looking to quit however, so I may treat myself to a whiskey this week sometime!

To be honest the way i look at is the same as smoking, it is in no way good for you, u get no benefit from it, it costs money and mess's up ur moods, Partys or big occasions is cool, but i truly don't see the point of drinking anymore, i used to come home from uni and drink 8 bottles or cans of beer every night for a month lol. I drank more at home than at uni lmao, but now i just stay off it, helps me think better and train.
Great jobs kiking it guys!! takes some serious dedication to do it (+reps)

Yeah, uni's what's done it for me.
But like you, when I think about it, it has nothing but negative effects on your body, and the way you can lose control over even the most basic of bodily functions is kinda scary if you think about it. Like they say, if alcohol was discovered today, it would be illegal.

Holy ****! I did not realize how how often I was around alcohol until I quit (10 days ago). I have an opportunity for free alcohol, either through work functions or parties, 5/10 days. This is a real problem and I think I need to make a change in my social habits. Scary!

Yeah it get's pretty crazy, people really brow beat you when you're out and not drinkin'.
Luckily the people I was out most with had a few guys who don't drink as well so they were able to take the heat off of me :-)
I know that's what did it the past times I 'decided' to quit, free booze offered by friends.

I have not told ANYONE about my deciding to quit drinking. I think people will eventually figure it out when they never see me drinking. I am quitting drinking for myself and my kids, not for anyone else. I figure my saying "no" to an offered drink does not require further explanation. I can just picture the conversation;
"wanna beer"?
"No, I quit"
"why, what happened"?
"Nothing, I just do not like what alcohol does to your body"
"Dude, I didn't think you had a problem"
"I didn't"
"Then why are you quitting"?
ETC, ETC, ETC

Great thread.
I am like the rest of you. I have a solid, no BS diet all week and once the weekend comes, I'm back in college. My problem is that I can consume any amount of fluid very fast. I average about a gallon of water a day at work, and then more after. So my fluid intake is like clock work. Once I replace water with a fresh beverage, I find myself sh!t faced beyond belief.
I have tamed down from my 3-4 days of partying - college days - but its still hard for me just to casually have a drink, I cannot stop once the buzz starts. Sometimes I drink a few glasses of water in the mix, but lately its been bad. I like partying tho, thats the thing, its the getting too drunk tht is killer.

Came to this realization, probably a few years later than I should have. I knew it, but the denial was strong. It's not only the beer, but the whole cycle:
1) Order Pizza (or comparable meal)
2) Drink beer along with said pizza
3) Go overboard with beers, consuming some big time calories between beer and pizza
4) Late night munchies after beer is gone- The rest of said pizza goes bye bye
5) Wake up - feel like crap
6) Need greasy food to make you feel better
7) Repeat at least one to two more times during the weekend(or long weekend, or more if on vacation).
8) Decide to go to the gym. Only make it 50-75% of the time. Workout is always sub-optimal to downright poor, depending on the day.
The overall pattern just repeats itself. Sure you throw in some cardio sessions in a measly attempt to override the damage done, but it's futile. The only thing it really accomplishes is a little extra demand on the CNS, inhibiting recovery from more serious workouts during the week.
Finally, being fit and feeling good won out.

As a recovering alcoholic, I am proud that I am working my way down to less and less drinking. It took me a long time to admit that I had a problem, but realize now when I tried to cut cold turkey several weeks ago that I was having all the symptoms of withdrawal. This month, I was hoping I could be able to not drink for a week, but caved on day 3. But still, I was proud I got that far. However, on that day, I was able to stop after only 2 drinks. In the past, I've been known to down half a bottle of tequila in a single sitting and still be fresh as a daisy the next day. After losing someone special to me and then my time as a bartender was basically the start of my current situation, but now I know I can fight it. Although I didn't even get half way through my one week goal, I know that next time, I could easily do 4 days in a row...then 5...and hopefully even a whole month. This thread has helped me a lot. Whenever I get a craving (which oddly enough only ever happens when I am home and at night), I turn to this thread for hope. This month, I have only drank 7 times and have noticed a large degree of weight loss. Although it is most likely water weight, I smile to see that I've dropped 7 lbs since the beginning of July.
I did drink last night, but my current goal is to not drink anything for the rest of the month.

This is the place for me!! I am looking to lose around 20lbs of weight and my biggest concern is my drinking. I have around 10-15 pints of cider everytime I go out, which is normally only once a week (maybe twice) which is over 2500 calories!
Its not too bad as its the summer and the weather is decent and I am on holiday from University but September/October time will probably be when I am coming on here for support.

151 + wine. Best combo, best bang for your buck and for your calories. It will get you faded real quick, 2-3 shots (151) + a glass of wine dude trust me. Otherwise I have to take like 10 shots (of 80 proof i mean) to get a fade.

Im the same way as most of you guys, ill drink one night a week but ill rip a few shots and kill atleast 12 beers myself on a saturday night... lately ive been wanting to cut back on drinking, not only for my diet, but just because i want too... whenever the guys wanna go out, ill just offer to drive and that right there will cause me to have about 2 beers max... i dont really like being drunk because most drunk people are SOO annoying! lol... but driving is my ticket to not boosin, and i dont mind it all... I still like to go out every once while for a spec occasion and put a few back tho

my biggest problem has been booze, for years now. I've finally started cutting (seriously) and lost about 12 pounds in the last 2 weeks, mostly by cutting out alcohol and the drunken munchies food (pizza, tacos, falafel, kebab, etc.) When I do drink, I really drink. I estimate I am taking about 1000+ calories in whiskey and maybe 600~800 calories in beer on a drinking night. I have REALLY cut down on that. It is almost impossible to cut drinking out of my life entirely otherwise it will make my social life rather awkward, so I basically have 2-4 whiskeys (on the rocks.) Skip the beer. Skip the food. Go home, eat clean. That is the best I can do so far, although I have really cut out a lot. I am gonna try to keep it up, I"ll let this thread know for sure
