DBZ for the unaware:

Episode 1: Vegeta powers up for the entire episode, other's stare and shudder in fear.

Episode 2: Vegeta starts charging laser, other's stare and shudder in fear for the ENTIRE EPISODE.

Episode 3: Vegata finishes charging laser, others stare and shudder in fear for the entire episode.

Episode 4: Vegeta talks about the devistation his laser will do, others stare and shudder in fear for the entire episode.

Episode 5: Vegeta finally shoots off laser beam, for the entire episode we see him shooting the beam while talking more about the davestation it will cause.

Episode 6: The laser has finally been shot, so for this entire episode we will see the cloud of smoke, while vegeta talks about what should/shouldn't be there when the smoke clears.

Episode 7: Smoke finally clears, and Goku is seen standing there.... Vegeta stares and shudders in fear for the entire episode.

Episode 8: Goku Starts powering up.... (and the cycle begins again.)

Anyone who says DBZ was not full of filler episodes that dragged out the series is lying to themselves. Never once did I say it was not entertaining, Like I said, I loved the hell out of it. But to not notice that would take being blind.

IIRC once Cell ate both androids, didn't it take like 3 episodes for him to finally complete the transformation to Perfect Cell.... See what I mean.

Are you familiar with Dragonball Kai? They're re-airing the "entire DBZ series," but cutting out all of the extra stuff. The end result is 100 episodes. When you take into account that over 290 episodes originally aired, one can easily see that nearly 66% of the show was "made up."

Speaking of Kai, I suggest to people who have recently become interested in DBZ, to watch that instead. Currently, it is in Japanese, but you can find it subbed online easily enough. Episode 15 was just released, and they're about to kill Vegeta, which corresponds to episode 35 in the original line-up(according to Wikipedia).
