Building muscle while losing fat?
I have been working out pretty seriously for almost a year now, and I am pretty happy with the muscle gains I have made over that period of time. However one thing that I have wanted to get rid of is my excess body fat. Don't get me wrong, I am not fat, in fact when I flex I am able to see my top four abs, but there is still that little layer that won't go away. My question is that if I want to really lean up do I need to stop weightlifting and go into a hard core diet and running routine then resume later when I am happy, or is it possible to continue to build muscle while losing body fat by just giving it more time?

yea just shorten your rest time
like 30 seconds, keeps your heart pumping and loses calories
drink TONS OF ICE COLD WATER, ice water burns calories
try swimming, it loses fat and scuplts body
do h.i.i.t. in a while

You do not need to stop weightlifting, loosing fat is primarily a diet issue, plus cardio. You can do a 'Cut' to loose fat, but you will probably loose some muscle too, how much depends on various factors, such as genetics, diet and 'outside help'.
It is possible to build muscle and loose fat at the same time but that is normally seen in noobs, and some other people.

Why do you say that's normally seen in noobs? I wouldn't consider myself a noon, I just have a little layer of fat and I'm trying to get my bf% very low

Woah woah woah, if you do cut, DO NOT stop lifting.
Anyway, the more muscle and less fat you have, the harder it will be to lose weight and build muscle at the same time. Think of it this way, an out of shape tub of lard will be able to build muscle and lose weight waaay more easily than the average person. Since you aren't really overweight and have been lifting for a year, I'd just do the diet and cardio until you're happy. Make sure to lift and get protein though.

15cals a day is nothing.
you should not be worrying about NEAT or other small caloric burning processes.

You realize that burning 5k calories in one year from drinking ice water every day plays out to about one day's worth of food for me... That's like renting a limo to drive one block.

Being cold slows down our metabolism. In cold weather, our body wants to put on fat to keep us warm. This is why you'll notice never having an appetite on a really hot day. It's also why spicy food causes weight loss and things like hot tubs, saunas and hot drinks actually cause our hunger to go down.
Point is, you think 5k calories is significant but what about the tens of thousands of calories that your body is holding onto because you are constantly freezing your innards?
I'd post a link to some sources but the site won't let me until my post count is over thirty, so go google it yourselves. Anyway, sorry for going off topic :P

This post is 100% correct. Even when on maintenence calories, Noobs gain close to people on steroids, Roiders on first cycle gain close to noobs, and big fat fukkers can gain muscle and lose weight as they are so fat already there body wants rid of it.
I personally would leave cardio out and eat less because i find it mind numbing and i couldnt give a shiit about my fitness as i don't play sport.

you actually burn more calories when colder, not hotter.

can u burn fat and gain muscle? No, not efficiently unless you are just starting out. If you have a clean bulk, you can build bigger muscle and limit the fat gain. You can also cut and limit the muscle loss by eating a good amount of protein in your deficit diet
Edit: And for god's sake do not stop lifting, up your cardio but weight training is just as important

alright man you probably look like my pic from late may or mine from early june. i was stuck in that stage what i did was i dieted alot same workouts a lot more intense though supersetting everything then after id run for distance not speed distance is better than speed. you want to run 30 min a day. which is about 500 calories cut right there. but run at a pace where you trick your body that you have a steady beat and slowly progress. stick to chicken and tuna whole wheat bread. turkey is good too. just keep your diet straight work your ass off til your blue in the face and you will see results. i started running one mile then went to 3 now i might was running 5 miles but that was much so i went back to 3 for time.

Lipo and lots of power bars.
Real answer: Cut down your diet to better suit your body while avoiding too many unessential fats. Work harder, and faster. IE More supersets and Trisets instead of one exercise, then another, then another, ~
You should be breathing and sweating like a pig.

you arent going to gain much if any muscle while cutting no matter what you do, but if you stop lifting you will lose the fat AND muscle you put on=counterproductivity
